Security increased as terror threat targets I-95 Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

BRIDGEPORT -- A terror threat targets Connecticut's busiest stretch of highway, the Interstate-95 corridor in Bridgeport. State police began stepping up security in the area Thursday.

The response is a coordinated effort between local and state police, the Coast Guard, and Homeland Security.

People taking the port Jefferson ferry to long island underwent police checks of vehicles at the docks today.

One of the more visible signs of the increased security measures put into place after authorities received information that Bridgeport could be targeted.

"It's nerve-wracking .. .you see police, and all that's going on, you often wonder," said Long Island resident Timothy Smith.

"What we've done now because of the alerts we've increased police to 24 hours, seven days a week," says Joseph Savino the Harbormaster. "Matter of fact, we just got back to the dock. We were out on patrol."

the alert appears to involve the stretch of I-95 that skirts the city, an area that includes the ferry terminal. The I-95 bridge over the harbor and the Metro North tracks that run parallel to the highway.

"It began with homeland security in Washington obtaining intelligence information and passing it to Connecticut," says State Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Vance. "In this day and age, all intelligence is taken seriously and passed on to law enforcement agencies that it might affect."

State police stress that the intelligence in this situation is both non-specific and unsubstantiated, but is taken very seriously -- hence the increased security.

Measures people seem willing to put up with for the peace of mind it affords them.

"Better the security here than to have a problem when we're out in the middle of Long Island sound on a boat," says Robert Mancuso.

OK, no shower jokes!... ;) I do note that the truck was carrying a highly viscous oil, not unlike the kereosene used for jet fuel. Guaranteed to stay together as a clump and burn hot. If and only if a plot had been hatched to repeat 9/11 on the highway, and criple the main artery, and if and only if it was planned as was 9/11 by Al Qaida Civil Engineers, then ... hmmmm!

Full coverage of the truck crash

Oficial police report is woman cut off trucker

I-95 is CLOSED in both directions!

Of course, one reason is that Connecticut never expanded the highway when it wa built to match the traffic load for this century

I have not yet been able to read reports concerning that accident. I have driven the I 95 area in southern Connecticut many many times, and the area south of the Q Bridge (New Haven) through to New York is a seriously treacherous roadway. The drivers who traverse there are as bad as anywhere else that I have seen, and that goes especially for the big rig truckers.

I have seen and read of many accidents in that area. Not the least of which was the collapse of the Mianus river bridge, and that fiery crash (I missed it by 20 minutes) which ultimately led to the immediate (ahead of schedule) closing of those toll booths.

Sometimes I have actually wondered if that section of highway might be haunted.

I have handled a lot of JP-5, and I would never accuse it of clumping up!

Especially the JP-5 that landed on the flight deck back in 81, I had to play fireman that day!

they are disabling the escape routes from Manhattan...

people will crowd onto the Amtraks to avoid increased commutes and detours....

they hit Manhattan and then hit the trains of people fleeing NYC.

(this is all a hypothesis.....but LA Union Station just installed radiological detectors this week)

I live nearby and drive this stretch of road regularly. It has been under construction just about forever. Right where the accident took place, the highway jogs left and right and goes over "temporary" lanes and pavement. Storm drains are right in the middle of the road and there are sections where there are no lane markers. Into this mess, mix concrete Jersey barriers and sever potholes and you've got one of the worst stretches of major highway in America. I am not surprised in the slightest that this accident took place because other, smaller accidents take place on this stretch regularly.
