Witnesses Say Kerry Participated in 1971 'Assassination Summit' (Insight Mag retraces FR steps)

Why do the major dailies continue to spike the story of John Kerry's role in the Nov. 12-15, 1971, "assassination summit" in Kansas City at which Kerry participated in the secret discussion and vote by the executive board of Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) on whether to murder seven U.S. senators and other leaders who continued to resist New Left demands that Vietnam be turned over to the Viet Cong? Tom Lipscomb, founding editor of (New York) Times Books, has nailed it all down in the New York Sun with an FBI surveillance report and six eyewitnesses, of whom five are current Kerry supporters/members of his presidential campaign and the sixth is for "anybody but Bush ... or Kerry."
- Self-confessed father of the VVAW murder conspiracy was Scott Camil, known as "Scott the Assassin," who confirms it was all deadly real. Camil says he has been invited to join the Kerry campaign in Florida and will do so.
- Kerry has been lying about this one for years, claiming he left the group two days before the secret meetings at Kansas City. He did resign, but after the assassination summit - to run for Congress. (He lost.) Witnesses say Kerry, then 27, thought the assassination strategy would be counterproductive and voted no, but he did not break with the conspirators and call a cop.
- Among those said to have been on the assassination list were Sens. Strom Thurmond, John Tower and John Stennis, as well as House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, father of commentator Cokie Roberts. An aircraft in which Boggs was flying disappeared mysteriously in Alaska on Oct. 16, 1972.

I might actually use a Kerry-type figure in my story. Jeff Head has inspired me to write one.

You can see the roughdraft beginning hereWell-written! :) Polished style, good lead that sets a tone of action/danger/excitement, followed up by a nice hook with what looks to be a very interesting premise. Looking forward to seeing more of the story :) Are you planning to publish it exclusively online or are you also considering publishing a printed version?

I have no idea about publishing it. I just started it today afterall. I am wondering how descriptive and lengthy this portion will be after I add more details and flesh things out.
I don't even know yet whether this is going more towards a war story, scifi story or a political thriller.... maybe all three?

Now, two out of the six intended victims died mysteriously within two years?
And Kerry did not report anything to the authorities?

I know that linking all the mysterious deaths to John Kerry is conspiracy theory, but isn't that exactly what John Kerry accused this country of in fighting the war in Vietnam? He claimed that war crimes were committed on a daily basis with full knowledge of command. What's the difference?

Some notes on watching CSPAN play the June 1971 (so before the KC meeting that would take place that November, of course) John Kerry/John O'Neill debate on the Dick Cavet Show:
1) Kerry mentioned Senator Stennis. The VVAW had sent Sen. Stennis a letter and it made my blood run cold when he mentioned the name. Just the thought that a few months later (and perhaps the idea was beginning to form before the meeting) Kerry MIGHT have cooly "debated" whether this man should be targeted for assassination was stunning.
2) On the Cavet show John O'Neill pointed out that none of the "soldiers" who provided the "Winter Soldier" testimony would sign sworn depositions affirming their statements.
At that, Kerry pointed to the audience and said he had a friend *from Florida* who was in the audience and he would step forward to sign a deposition. This offer was not accepted and the name not mentioned, but I will guess it was *Scott Camil* who resides in Florida.

Oh, and as I read replies and someone mentioned the "Phoenix Project",
Those words also were uttered on the Cavet program. They were referring to the government's plan that was named that, but it was another startling moment to hear this long ago discussion in light of what we're learning now.

He basically said what has been reported in the papers .. and then when asked who he thought that had the most to gain from stealing these files .. he said the Republicans because he was in the process of giving the files to Kerry.

Can the media bias get any worse? The percolation seems to be taking a very long time. I wish the Republicans would stop playing defense over the whole Dick Clarke thing and get to it already. Guess it doesn't help that the full-court press is now on, trying to get rid of the current president, and it's still March. I bet things are going to get very ugly before November.

John Tower died in a plane crash in Georgia, I believe, but I could be wrong.. John Heinz died in another when his plane crashed due to being bumped by a helicopter that was sent to look at the plane to determine what was wrong with its landing gear. (or something like that) The crashes were days apart.
The Stennis shooting is the most bothersome to me. (he was senator from my home state for all of my childhood.) I would really like to have more information on the event, and I wonder if the Clarion Ledger in Jackson has some sort of research/archives department. They do not have archives on line beyond 7 days.
To: cyncooper
You might add to your note on the Dick Cavett Show that even then people were calling Kerry a liar even back then. He hasn't changed in all these years.

I agree .. and Kerry has the most to gain to have these files disappear
Because if it's reported that he did give them to Kerry .. then the spot light is on Kerry to release them to clear up the record
But if they are supposedly stolen .. then Kerry can't say he has them
But here is what gets me ... Kerry must have known after all these years that he had an FBI file .. he never bothered to request copies to see what was in them???
