Blue with envy. Don't confuse hatred with jealousy when rooting against Duke

Duke center Shelden Williams never realized just how much animosity there was toward his team until one of his cousins made the mistake of walking through a mall wearing a Duke T-shirt one day last year. Total strangers yelled at her, screaming out how much they hated the Blue Devils. She couldn't have attracted more venom if she had clubbed baby seals in the middle of the food court.

Personally, I like them a whole lot better than most other professional collegiate athletic programs. They'd have a much better image if they could stuff sweaty jock straps in Dick Vitale's CHihuahua-like Yap. However, they should not be judged by the ignorant behavior of bandwagon morons like Baldy Vitale.

They win repeatedly. They play more by the rules than anyone else out there. They have yet to get caught beating their girlfriends or accusing their players of being dope sellers.

DUke is probably the classiest team left in this year's Final Farce.

Well now I really feel sorry for those Duke fans. It's sad they are so hated. Most Bball fans around here are rather indifferent to them. This Duke-hatred may be more prevalent back on the eastern side of the country, where all the self-important northeastern sports commentators like Pizzaboy believe themselves to be the basketball geniuses of th world, but here in the heartland I don't think people care that much about them one way or the other.

I'll take Dickie V over Pizzaboy anyday. At least Dickie V has a personality and knows what he is talking about.

I was in Atlanta a few years ago when I strolled into the lobby of the hotel I was in. Grant Hill was playing the piano and some of the Blue Devils were singing along with some jazz and standards. Very surreal. I tried to imagine some of Bob Huggins' or Jerry Tarkanian's finest in the same picture before me.

America's losers hate America's winners. The fact that Duke is far superior academically to virtually every other school with a major sports program probably accounts for some of the resentment, too. Too bad, but that's the way it is.

See we do not have class in Maryland, but I heard some of the chants that Duke fans gave to Juan Dixon or DJ Strawberry. Pretty classless I would say.

UCLA, Michigan. Georgia Tech. Illinois. There are a few top tier schools in Division 1A.

Duke is a fine school, but not "far superior".

I agree ... this is just a 'noise' piece. Duke leaves quite a few folks breathless.

But I'll say this much. I've met more than a few Dukies ... and they're an excellent bunch overall. They're almost as great as OSU (Buckeyes) alums.
