This has not appeared in the news yet (even on conservative sites). If we could get the tape of this, it would *destroy* Kerry.
On 9/11, on Larry King Live, Kerry was asked the following question, and had the following response:
KING: Senator Kerry did your -- did you committee on international opertions and terrorism ever actually fear something like this?
SEN. JOHN KERRY: Absolutely. Absolutely. But let me join John [McCain] and I know all my colleagues in just expressing -- I think all of us here in Washington are feeling in very personal ways the loss of what's happened here. I know that I had one friend I know of already on that plane from Boston, and I dread the learning of perhaps others. But for thousands of families tonight, there is just a huge loss, and I think in every American there's a sense -- there's a fury, an intense, burning fury about this and a determination to do what is right about it.
We have always known this could happen. We've warned about it. We've talked about it. I regret to say, as -- I served on the Intelligence Committee up until last year. I can remember after the bombings of the embassies, after TWA 800, we went through this flurry of activity, talking about it, but not really doing hard work of responding.

Intersting.
The tape exists---CNN archives them.
Good luck getting CNN to provide it. It will most likely be erased and all hard drive copies destroyed now.

Yes it does seem odd to see them talking about Flight 800. I mean, wasn't that an accident??? (wink wink, nudge nudge)
J-FinK is not the only Clintonista to bring up TWA 800 in the terror context by accident. I seem to recall that George Stuffingenvelopes was on ABC on 9-11 and was speculating what the WH staff might be doing. Drawing on his experience from the WH staff, he said that they would be in the Situation Room, just as they were for... among other occasions... the "bombing" of Flight 800.
Do we have the JFinK video from LKL on 9-11?

What's the damaging aspect of this quote? probably the last part ". . . we went through this flurry of activity, talking about it, but not really doing hard work of responding. "
To: jmstein7
Interesting.
To: Frank_Discussion
Seems like he was saying that flight 800 was terrorism.
To: jmstein7
This quote has been posted a dozen times or so in the last week. I'm surprised no one has made anything of it.
We do know, and this is uncontested, that the first instinct of clinton was to believe it was terrorism -- just as Bush thought 911 was directly tied to Iraq.
But it went away. Terrorism was ruled out before the flames had burned out.
There was an FAA investigator whose name I forget -- anyway Rush said he knew him and trusted him to tell the truth. I believe he retired before the investigation was completed. I've always taken that as a bad sign.
If I've got any facts wrong I'd welcome correction.

And it very well could have been a fuel-tank related explosion. He is just saying that the intel committee and investigators looked into terrorism as a possible cause.
This isn't some magic bullet "AH-HAH!" quote that lets the cat out of the bag.

I love how more and more, and increaingly casually, TWA 800 is mentioned in passing when terror strikes are mentioned or listed.

On a related note...Clarke's earlier comments about Bush increasing intelligence five-fold right after taking office got me to searching and according to the articles I have found, the budget blueprint to beef up intelligence was unveiled by Bush on Feb 28, 2001, which would fit in with Clarke's statement (the one time he DIDN'T lie). It was also amended to add even more money in June of 2001.
The following legislative link indicates that Congress did not act on it until Sep 14 2001.
Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002
So...WHO did nothing prior to 9/11 to beef up intelligence? CONGRESS!

WHY did TWA Flight 800 just have to go down the very night before HILLARY-Hired White House Security Chief CRAIG LIVINGSTONE was to name her under oath on National TV as the one who hired him to get her those FBI Files on Members of Congress ..or protect her instead by pleading the 5th..?
Which Event was all over your TV Screens after the crash and which one's TV Air Time got cancelled all together..?

WHAT did Clinton & Kerry cover up????????????????????
jmstein7, you are the greatest.
http://www.ntsb.gov/Publictn/2000/aar0003.htm The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the TWA flight 800 accident was an explosion of the center wing fuel tank (CWT), resulting from ignition of the flammable fuel/air mixture in the tank. The source of ignition energy for the explosion could not be determined with certainty, but, of the sources evaluated by the investigation, the most likely was a short circuit outside of the CWT that allowed excessive voltage to enter it through electrical wiring associated with the fuel quantity indication system.

All King had to do was collect himself, what for him to finish his sentence, pause three beats, and then ask:
"Why in the world would TWA 800 be discussed alongside Khobar Towers, WTC1, and The Cole? We're we told that the cause of the explosion was a spark inside a fuel tank?"
It would be a whole new ball game.
They must think we are incredibly stupid.

What's the damaging aspect of this quote?
I think the real significance of this is that the Bush administration is being accused of doing nothing to stop the events of 911 in the 8 months they were in power before it happened.
Now in Kerrys own words, he admits that the Clintoon administration as well as the Senate Intelligence Committee did nothing but talk about it, even after several terrorist events where Americans lost lives.
In other words, the worst thing Bush can be accused of is maintaining the status quo. When we were attacked again, Bush responded when no one else would. Had this been left to people the likes of Kerry, they would still be talking about it.
