[What does Win 98se do that XP won't? We suspect a networking advantage, as our local provider handles the two OSs differently in equipment and cost for broadband service.]

Win 98se is stable at this point in time.

AHAHAHAHA!!!! Only if you define "stable" as "no more patches coming because it has been officially abandoned by Microsoft". If on the other hand you meant "stable" the way most people use the word when describing operating systems, Win98SE most definitely is *not* stable.

I'm pretty hard on my computers, often running up to 20+ simultaneous windows and over a dozen applications at once, all day long. On Win98SE, I have to reboot multiple times a day. On WinXP, my average is around once a *week*.

XP is vastly more stable than 98SE.

XP reconfigures itself every so often...

So?

not to mention allowing a whole new class of ATTACK through the Windows Messinger port [fixable through "Shoot-The-Messinger" program available FREE from Gibson Research...which we did AFTER losing a Hard Drive to an attack!].

You didn't have your networking and built-in firewall configured correctly, but in any case your comment is irrelevant to the question of what 98 can do that XP allegedly can't do.

If XP is so bloody stable, how come books are now appearing to tell exactly how to "HACK THE XP REGISTRY" to get what you REALLY want???

That's a nice non sequitur. Registry hacks have nothing to do with stability. They're used to customize the operating system to behave exactly the way you'd like it to -- it's about personalization, not stability. And they're not "hacks" exactly, since they're just flipping settings that Microsoft *already* provides for in their operating system, but prefers not to provide an interface for the casual user to get into and muck around with by accident.

When was the last time you bought a book with more than 100 Registry "hacks" for Windows 98SE???

Back when Win98SE was the current version of Windows.

Enquiring minds want to know!!!

So now you know.
