Yes I got all that too.

I went in in August of 1958. Did my basic at Ft. Carson Colorado.

Eventually went to Germany right on the French border for two years.

I was discharged before the Vietnam war got going.

I was in the National Guard then for four years.

I love them! And for those of you who are into accesorizing, they match very nicely with the new cammies:o)

"I see that Bates got part of the boot contract. They make the worst boots that I have ever owned."

I thought that they were the masters of their market..... 8~)

By golly, it looks like the time-honored practice of spit shining boots is over, at least for a while. I preferred KIWI, cotton balls or tee-shirt and a little bit of rubbing alcohol mixed in with water, in the top of the can.

It was always nice to run 5 miles, get a shower, and then crack open some heavily starched BDU's, a fresh pair of socks and slip on those highly spit shined dry jungle boots. Heaven!

I remember chastising one of my pilots that his boots looked esp. crappy tha day, he allowed that shoe polish was a FOD hazard. Of all the lame excuses, that was one of the better ones.

Back, more than a few years, when I was a young Marine, the Corps had a boot (black) with kind of suede texture to the leather. This boot required a great deal of polishing in order to build up a base that would hold a shine. Fortunately, the combat boots I was issued were standard black leather that didn't require nearly the effort. The suede textured boots were phased out eventually ... but those that had them wore them with pride ... as it designated them as "salts". That meant you had been in the "Corps" for awhile.
