Writers Working on 'The Simpsons' Movie

NEW YORK - Lisa Simpson will still be 8 when "The Simpsons" movie comes out - but we'll be a lot older.

Writers are working now, but the voice of Lisa Simpson, Yeardley Smith, said the film won't be made until the series is over, and it still has at least two seasons to go. Smith said it will then take three years to make the movie because "animation takes forever."

Despite the lengthy process, Smith says she's glad to hear about the movie. "My wish for the show is that it go out with a bang and not a pimple," Smith told AP Radio. "And if we can do a movie and it can be as good as our best episodes, I'm thrilled. I think that would be wonderful."

Smith said she hopes the writers will keep Lisa's childlike sense of humor in the movie.

"If they just make her too esoteric, too philosophical, too bright, too much the voice of reason then she really becomes insufferable," she said. "You have to always, always, always remember that she's 8 and that she's a huge Itchy and Scratchy fan, that she loves Krusty the Clown. And that in spite of her beliefs and her issues, she's a kid."

The Simpsons greatness was in being anti-PC. The occasional new show I've seen now has the characters name dropping to seem "hip" and saying bizarre stuff. One show had Homer saying something like "Rock musicians are just another example of whites exploiting black achievements." or something like that- trying to say blacks invented rock and roll and whites get to take the credit.

Screw Lisa Simpson! A child that screams in anger that if Bart is president he would "fill the supreme court with boys" is no good.

You might note that the two shows utilize two very different animation techniques. "South Park" is sort of like Colorforms and stop-motion photography. "The Simpsons" is your traditional, frame-by-frame animated cartoon - much more time-consuming.

I wonder if the Simpsons can be done with computers and retain the feel of it.

I think the creative control is the biggest difference between the two shows, and it is a BIG difference.

IMHO, The Simpsons & South Park are both excellent. Simpsons have had great character development. South Park has had great and timely story lines. Although the under-stories of Eric's Mom do surface to great amusement. And Chef is a great character, pretty good depth there.

Homer is definitely my favorite Simpson. Favorite non-Simpson? That's a tough one. They all work so well together. Sort of like an ensemble. Which is more important, the violin or the cello? The trumpet or the trombone?

I knew my fiance was the one for me when I discovered she had a Homer Simpson shaped bottle-opener that said "Mmmmm..... Beer" every time you popped a bottlecap.

My father got those for the beer drinkers in the family a couple Christmases ago, and my niece LOVES it when Homer says that. She jumps up and down, claps her hands, and wiggles. My poor brother-in-law has to drink another beer to satisfy her. What kind of hideous fate is that?

Another personal favorite of mine was Beavis and Butthead.

Chef is great -- Isaac Hayes had an office down the hall from my last job. I never met him, but my co-workers who did meet him said he was nice...even to the guy who ran into him in the men's room and blurted out "You're Chris Isaak!" :D

Homer and Ralph Wiggum or Snake. Favorite episode would be any not made in the last 4 seasons. Everyone involved with the show has to know that it hasn't been that great lately.
