April 12, 2004 -- A new poll says the majority of Americans think the latest spike in Iraq violence means the United States should get tougher militarily - not retreat. The CNN-Time magazine poll also found that most Americans still believe the Iraq war was right, weren't surprised by the new attacks and are confident that the United States will regain control of areas of unrest like Fallujah.

I am normally allergic to any news articles that give good news in the first sentence, and follow with a second sentence that starts with the word "but." Bad news stories always pile it on until maybe the last sentence or so, to maintain the semblance of "balance."

I do take exception to the use of the word "partisan" here. I support hanging tough in Iraq and in the War on Terror because I am an American with concern for my countries' future, not because of any party affiliation. This makes it sound like the whole thing should be politicized. It is the press that seems to want this to become a matter of politics.

Looks like the media's dream of "Tet2" is going up in flames. IMHO Tet68 was the high-water mark of the institutional media, when they turned a catastrophic communist defeat into a decisive victory. NVA commander Vo Nguyen Giap has said as much in his book, How We Won the War.

In the late 60s, perhaps 10 people controlled the entire flow of information in the US, and no more than 3 or 4 in Britain. Today it is very different. Outlets have proliferated, the idea of a socialist talking head like Cronkite being "the most trusted man in America" is laughable, and any one of us can make daily contact through the net with eyewitnesses in any part of the world.

Media power has been declining for years, slowly at first and more precipitously in recent years. The media lords are feeling the heat. I think they have lost touch with reality, like Hitler in his bunker, and are trying desperately to revive the unbridled power that their predecessors enjoyed in the 60s.

This poll does not surprise me at all.

People like Teddy Kennedy and John Kerry hope Americans have changed since 1972. This poll says we are pretty much the same people we were back then. That will be a great surprise to Democrats in 2004 as it was in 1972.

You're right. You would think these polls would be screaming to pull out tomorrow, based on reporting.

There are plenty of people that walk around repeating word for word what comes off the network news, the NY Times, the Washington Post, or even NPR.

With the 3% +/- margin of error, this poll demonstrates that democrats are split virtually 50/50 on the Iraq war issue. Given all the partisan attacks on president Bush, it's comforting to know that a large number of democrats disagree with the Bush-hating radical leftwing of their party.

Regarding your statement about the WMD........I remain convinced that those weapons are going to be found. The Iraqi soldiers carried gas masks with them. All of Israel, every many, woman, and child had gas masked at the ready.

Intelligence on this was not wrong.

No kidding. We are so blessed to finally have an internet, a Fox news channel, and talk radio. No more Walter Kronkites in helmets declaring, "The war in Vietnam is lost." This will probably still happen, but it won't be perceived as Moses coming down from the mountain.
