Video Surfaces Of Racial Slurs At UNM Concert
Heckler Shouted Epithets After Disrupting Rap Show Action 7 News has obtained exclusive home video of an incident that has created an uproar at the University of New Mexico.
The images show a heckler unplugging the equipment of a Navajo rap band and then shouting racial epithets.
The incident happened two weeks ago. Navajo rappers Tribe Two were performing -- with permission -- for an hour near the Duck Pond when the disgruntled student brought their performance to a halt. A war of words quickly erupted before the student stormed off.
As he left, he kept up his insults, according to students who witnessed the incident.
He walks directly by me and says, that's why we put you on reservations, said Rebekah Horse Chief, a UNM student who called the remarks hurtful.
It was really awful ... calling the native people monkeys and speaking gibberish, she said.
The universitys Native American Studies Department is calling on the university to take action against the student, calling his actions a hate crime.
This could very well have led to very violent behavior inciting, people's emotions ... ethnic racial slurs are about the worst thing you can do, said one professor.
Campus police are investigating to see if the student broke the schools code of conduct. If he did, punishment could include anything from a verbal warning to dismissal from the university.
The District Attorney is also looking into charges against the student, including criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
The university has called for a forum to discuss the incident. That meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Room 123 at Dane Smith Hall on the university campus.
Geez, I guess rape, robbery and murder are Ok then? Whatever happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never harm me?"
Just wondering.
Yes. Certainly far worse than minor events like armed robbery, rape, or murder.
Sheesh. Don't forget to bring in counselors so the delicate little dears can work out the trauma that this incident has caused to their tender little psyches.
Instead of getting into an third-grade type arguement claiming their feelings has been hurt, why didn't one of the memebers of the band just plug back in the equipment and go on with the concert? And, if the guy tried it again, a groupie, or roadie, or whatever could take him aside and threaten to make mince-meat out of him.
More to this story bump. What were the rappers rapping about? From this link (Tribe 2) its seems pretty wholesome.
