[history]
Congressional Democrats yesterday defended Jamie S. Gorelick's position on the September 11 commission, one day after a leading House Republican called for her resignation.
Several top Democratic leaders cited the continued support of Commission Chairman Thomas H. Kean, the former Republican governor of New Jersey, in stating their support for Ms. Gorelick.

Hatch is clueless. It's not about defending Gorelick, it's about the credibility of the Commission, what little there is left of it.

Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, Utah Republican, who is Mr. Sensenbrenner's counterpart in the Senate, defended Ms. Gorelick. "I know and respect Jamie Gorelick," he said. "I trust she will do the right thing regarding any conflict of interest or appearance of conflict of interest regarding her continuing service on the 9/11 commission." In fairness to Hatch, that is not a defense. In fact, that can fairly be read as him implicitly suggesting that she step down given that she not only has a conflict but she is actually a witness who is going to have to testify before the commission. BTW, if that happens, I wonder if we will be treated to the spectacle of Kean allowing her to ask a question of herself from the commission bench and then running down to the witness table so that she can then answer the question she just posed to herself.

I think some people need to re-read the quote before they bury the Hatch. I didn't read it as a defense at all. Just a statesman's way of saying "if these things are true and there's a conflict of interest, I trust she'll step down."
At worst, it's a little mealy-mouthed. But it certainly isn't a defense.

Use to have a lot of respect for Senator Hatch but he has been subjected to the slimy Dims, like Kennedy, for so long he is now total ineffective and needs to be replaced. Gorelick is on the commission for one reason, to make sure Clinton doesn't come out looking bad and to help make it look like everything is President Bush's fault. When those of us that know the truth start complaining, it seems like there is always a Rino that comes out in support of the Dims, so nothing is ever done about it. The Dims, some Rinos and the media seem to be hell bent on getting Pres. Bush out of the White House and care less how they get the job done. Many of us complain, send emails and make calls but it seems nobody is listening. Everyday there is Kerry, Kennedy and a host of their supporters on tv, a book a week bashing the President, the new lie for the day being told. It is so disgusting. The media speaks kinder of a hardened criminal than they do of the President. I will be there in November to cast my vote for President Bush, if I have to crawl to the polls to do so, but I have to admit it gets very frustrating at times to listen to all the accusations and lies that are told on a daily basis.

If you were certain there would be a cry to form a "9/11 Committee" and you were also certain the outcome would be to blast your adminstration, you might wish to be able to easily dismiss the effort as "partisan". How would you do that? Hmm. A headline forms in a vision, "Unamed source says WH fears Gorelick may be named to Commission".

Hatch, naturally, sides with the scumbag Democrats to defend that pig Gorelick, the one person clearly documented as the person most responsible for the security boondoggle that allowed the terrorist murder of over 3,000 American citizens.
When is Hatch up for reelection? I am sick of that guy.

"It's hard to see how she can review systemic failures in intelligence, when she held a high-ranking position in the prior administration and played a role in intelligence matters," Mr. Turley said yesterday. "Not only is there a strong suggestion of conflict [of interest], there is an overwhelming appearance of conflict." What is so difficutl to understand about this?
Either Ms Goerlick resigns, or she is removed. A Committee of this importance cannot be tainted with even the least suspicion of bias.
And that is why Kissinger et al should have been on the commission instead of the party-hacks that fill the chairs now.
Apparently the GOP is in need of multiple spine-transplants. They leave the whole fight to President Bush and his administration while the Dems are using every ruse in the book and some that aren't even there.

I think the situation with this pathetic "9-11 Commission" has reached critical mass. Within the next couple of days, Bush HAS GOT TO ANNOUNCE, loudly and publicly, that he no longer has confidence that the commission can perform its duties in a competent and nonpartisan manner. Here - - I'll help Dubya out with his Saturday afternoon press release:
"After observing the inconsistent and seriously flawed testimony of one important witness who apparently had a book to sell, the partisan sniping at another witness who is one of my most trusted advisors, and now the overwhelming conflict of interest represented by the continued participation on the commission by a person now revealed to be a key player in the national security lapses which led to 9-11, I have concluded that the commission's credibility is damaged beyond repair and its usefulness is in doubt.
"Unfortunately, the hearings have devolved into an election-year witch-hunt. The commission was supposed to provide guidance and recommendations for preventing future attacks, but has instead turned into a disappointing blame-game of finger-pointing and political grandstanding.
"The victims and families of the September 11th terrorist attacks deserve better.
"It is with deep regret that I hereby announce that, due to a loss of confidence in the integrity and nonpartisanship of the commission, my administration will have no further contact with the commission and will no longer support its work.
"Shortly, I will convene a new panel of military, FBI, and intelligence experts to investigate the security breaches and inadequacies that allowed the terrorist murder of over 3,000 of our citizens on that fateful day in 2001. Additionally, and most importantly, the new panel will be tasked with making solid and practical recommendations for better protecting our nation from future attacks. The investigation will be thorough, and the investigation will be conducted away from public display, though not from public scrutiny. I will ask that the investigation be completed, and the final report ready for public release in its entirety, no later than August 1st of this year.
"Thank you, and may God bless America."

Apparently the GOP is in need of multiple spine-transplants.
Ex NJ Governor Thomas "I Will Leave No Stone Unturned" Kean has been unhelpful, IMO.
Lehman is the only one with a spine on that commission. Has he made any comments about Gorelick?

Yes, unfortunately he (Lehman) has supported her.
I made the point in another thread that it might be that they are all very polite to her, to make it easier for her to resign gracefully. However, the more I hear, the more I doubt it.

Geoffrey Hazard Jr., a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said criticism of Ms. Gorelick's position on the September 11 panel is overblown. "It was well known she'd been deputy attorney general [during the Clinton administration]. And if that was so awful, it should have been awful from Day One," when she was named to the commission, said Mr. Hazard. Following this to it's logical conclusion, once a mistake is made you can never correct it. What are the hearings for except to correct mistakes?

The Democrats must have something on Hatch. He acts like a man afraid of being "outed" if he doesn't toe the line. I don't have very good gay-dar but he makes my detector activate whenever I see him... Was his FBI record one of those that the Livingstone and Nusbaum had? However, the staffer said, he didn't expect them to express much outrage over the situation until they return next week after a recess
What was the last scandal that Republicans came out on top of? The Judicial memogate? No. The Dems memo on how to attack GWB after the 911 Committee report? No.
The Congressional Republicans are the most neutered and useless bunch of do-nothings. But, who's to blame? The voters who keep sending them back to Congress.
My prediction: Gorelick will remain on the Commission, will become a victim of the VRWC, [sniffle, teardrop alert, Kleenex brigade, poor Ms Gorelick is being treated so mean], and will fulfill her purpose in cleansing the Clinton years of much fallout.
The 911 Commission has become a farce.

I could not agree with you more. Hatch is an embarrassment, But I wonder, why is it that I ALWAYS read Democrats come to so and so's defense, but rarely read Republicans come to someone's defense? Can the Republicans really fail to understand how politics work? Unfortunately I'm afraid that they will never be able to take the gloves off and engage in down and dirty hard core political tactics. And that will constantly have them on the defensive.
