President Bush's re-election campaign today begins running an updated TV ad portraying Sen. John Kerry as a "craven political opportunist," said Bush campaign manager Ken Mehlman.

"He is using Iraq in a purely political way to capitalize on events on the ground in Iraq for his own political gain," Mr. Mehlman said of the Massachusetts Democrat.

So I was wondering what the context of Kerry's infamous quote came from. So I goes to JohnKerry.com and does a search on "87 billion". And the first thing that comes up is an LA Times news article about Republican senators coming to his defense for that quote.

Here is how the Kerry campaign justifies his saying "I actually voted for the $87 billion, before I voted against it":

"You can take a guy like John Kerry, who's been in the Senate for 19 years, and go through that voting record," Hagel said. "You can take it with … any of us, and pick out different votes, and then try to manufacture something around that."

Kerry's staff said he was trying to indicate his support for an amendment funding the appropriation from increased taxes on the wealthiest Americans. When that amendment failed, he voted against the bill.

Discussing the Bush campaign charges, McCain told the "Today" show on Thursday, "I do not believe that he is, quote, weak on defense. He's responsible for his voting record, as we are all responsible for our records, and he'll have to explain it. But, no, I do not believe that he is necessarily weak on defense."

So let me get this straight: The Kerry campaign's explanation is that Kerry supported funding the Iraq war as long as the extra money only came from the wealthiest Americans. And when that idea was shot down, he voted against funding our troops.

IOW, John Kerry wasn't willing to merely vote for an amendment to stick the wealthy with the bill for the war as a tactic in the Democrats' class war. It was the only way he was willing to support our troops, period!

John Kerry, you own that vote. That may not be a flip-flop. It's worse: That's despicable!

"A lot of people don't really know who I am," . . .

Actually, a lot of people know you as well as they knew Al Gore, who made the same claims. The real problem is that you don't know who you are, Sen. Kerry.

Well, yeah, we do. You're that guy with the long face who looks real French and always talks about being in Vietnam. That Heinz guy. We call you "Ketchup Boy" for short.

And you've never shown any convinction or backbone on a single issue yet.

Yeah, we know who you are.

Now, go away, please.

A lot of times Senators will vote against something they know won't pass, because of amendments, as a type of protest. Kerry's real vote, the one he knew that mattered, was against supporting the troops. The only reason he voted this way was because Dean was making political hay at the time by opposing the war. So now Kerry is in a quandry. He can't admit that's the real reason, so he has to live with the vote.

Portraying Kerry as a liberal, after already having portraid him as a flip-flopper, is likely to be effective because if he tries to back away from his liberal positions, he'll walk into the flip-flop fire.

He accused the Democrat of "blaming America first, when in fact international terrorists are responsible for the actions, atrocities, the attacks in Iraq."

Right on!

Sure John, I know who you are

You are the guy who thinks the U.N. should determine how we protect our shores

You are the guy who demands everyone except you provide your tax returns for scrutiny.

Your the guy who won 3 purple hearts, a silver star, and a bronze star in questionable actions, and in only four months, then demanding that our President open his military records for review, while you refuse to open yours.

Your the guy who thinks the road to my prosperity lies in the government taking more of my money, so I have less to spend on MY family.

Your the guy who can get a 6 million dollar loan on a 6 million dollar property, without releasing any information about how you got it, who and if there was a co-signer, or whether the house you put up was even your own, and not a joint property paid for in full by your wife.

Your the guy who wants to stop out sourcing of jobs, as long as the companies are not owned by Heinz Inc.

Your the "common man" who owns $28+ million in property through out the United States, and that does not include the properties owned in foreign countries, or the yachts and other play things all us "common folk" are so privy to own.

Your the guy who shows respect for those who protect your life by calling them S.O.B's

Your the guy who came home from Viet Nam, and accused the true "Band of Brothers" of commiting war crimes on a daily basis, although you admit to killing a wounded V.C., which I believe is a war crime.

Your the guy who joined an organization that called for the assasination of U.S. Senators, although you say you didn't vote for it, or even go to that particular meeting, and when FBI records show you were there, basically referred to it as a youthful indiscretion.

You are the guy who has as many different positions on an issue as there are groups to cater to.

You are the guy who believes a known terrorist and murderer is a "legitimate voice" of his people.

You are the guy who would negotiate with terrorist and treat is as a "police matter" rather than take a hard stance and fight with the determination to destroy evil.

You are the guy who would leave our troops without supplies, and the support they need to complete their mission, while saying you support them, before you didn't support them.

You are the guy who would cut and run, leaving the Iraqi people in the hands of someone as bad or worse than the despot we recently deposed

Yes John Kerrey I know who you are, and that is why I would vote Joseph Stalin before I would vote for you.

"A lot of people don't really know who I am," Mr. Kerry told Democrats at a New York fund-raiser yesterday.

He worries about that a lot. Reportedly, he's often asked people "Do you know who I am?"
