John Kerry Runs New Pro-Abortion TV Ad Blasting President Bush
http://www.lifenews.com ^ | April 19, 2004 | by Steven Ertelt

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Likely Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry has started running television ads blasting President Bush for his pro-life position -- specifically his nomination of pro-life judges to various federal courts. The ads are timed to coincide with the national pro-abortion march on Saturday.

"The Supreme Court is just one vote away from outlawing a woman's right to choose. George Bush will appoint anti-choice, anti-privacy justices. But you can stop him. Help elect John Kerry and join the fight to protect our right to choose," the ad says.

"I promise to take the fight to George Bush every single day," Kerry says, closing the ad.

Pro-life advocates say the ad doesn't get past the first sentence before it gives viewers wrong information.

Kerry's ad mimics the claims of doomsayers at national abortion advocacy groups, namely that the Supreme Court is one vote away from overturning abortion.

However, the current Supreme Court favors the central tenants of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision by a 6-3 margin, with a change of two members needed to give it a pro-life majority.

Douglas Johnson, legislative director for National Right to Life, says his group, "believes that Roe v. Wade was an act of judicial legislation and should be overturned. Therefore, it would be welcome news if in fact 'only' five justices supported Roe."

"Regrettably, however, it is not true," Johnson explains. "Six current justices have voted to affirm Roe v. Wade: Justices Breyer, Ginsburg, Kennedy, O'Connor, Souter, and Stevens. Only three of the current justices have ever voted to overturn or substantially scale back Roe: Justices Rehnquist, Scalia, and Thomas."

Calls to the Kerry campaign from LifeNews.com were not returned by press time.

Kerry has twice voted in favor of an amendment to the ban on partial-birth abortions urging the Supreme Court not to overturn the Roe decision.

The Kerry campaign is targeting the ads at strong Kerry supporters in an attempt to bring in donations.

According to an Associated Press report, the 30-second ad will run for two weeks on cable channels such as CNN, MSNBC, Lifetime and Bravo in heavily Democratic states such as New York, California, New Jersey, Washington state, and Wisconsin.

Agreed. Preaching to the choir for this group of fanatics should be totally unnecessary. It's also another poke in the eye of the Catholic church at a time when his "Catholicity" is being challenged. Not wise politics in my opinion, FWIW.

I wish that were true. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court is more like 3 or 4 votes away from returning the right of the state to regulate the killing of children.

This is a guy with not a single idea. Not a single postive idea or plan. His whole message is "Bush is bad and we have to undo what he has done."

That won't get a guy elected in this day and age.

I agree - this ad won't do him a bit of good. At any time, Bush could respond with a "Kerry is in favor of partial-birth abortion, which Democratic Senator described as "four-fifths infanticide.""

"The Supreme Court is just one vote away from outlawing a woman's right to choose."

A woman has a right to choose to have her breasts reduced (or enlarged), her nose straightened, her fat liposuctioned and her tonsils removed. What do all of these procedures have in common? That's right--they only affect the woman herself. Abortion affects the life of another human being. Partial birth abortion is the ultimate proof of that. If it looks like a baby, acts like a baby, thinks like a baby, and feels like a baby, then what is it? To democrats--extraneous tissue!

Nice job Johnny... Every day you give conservatives not just reason to vote against you, but to preach to others to vote in favor of Bush.

I doubt he's solidifying his base as much as his opposition.

The DNC should be embarassed that a man who favors the killing of the unborn is their candidate. Instead, he's promoted as such. Sick.

The Howard Dean theory was that he could get enough liberals out to vote for him to overwhelm the advantage for Bush. The problem is that voter participation in a Presidential election is over 50% -- in a bad year.

I don't think Monsieur Nuance can even claim this as a good strategy.

The idea here is to play on Democrat strengths. Abortion is viewed as a plus for the Democrats. It's actually a wash unless you can portray the Republican as a fanatic on the issue -- hard to do with a personality like Bush and harder still with an incumbent. The only thing Kerry can do is point to PBA as an example of Bush's "fanaticism". A bad move for Kerry.

I know this is the strategy because Kerry has also announced he is going after Bush on "the environment". Well, even if the aresenic-in-the-water stuff managed to stick, the real environmental issue will be ANWAR and Kerry will not want to touch that with gas prices so high.

Kerry is flailing.

I see this as a tacit admission Kerry has a big problem within his own "base". At this time, he should be trying to gain the support of the "center", without which he hasn't a prayer of even make it a reasonably close race.

The fact Kerry and his campaign advisors are spending money today fighting for registered Democrats is bad news for liberals everywhere.

Good news for me, however!.....LOL!

The Supreme Court is just one vote away from outlawing a woman's right to choose.

That just isn't right. Women ought to be able to choose not to have unprotected sex, or abstain outright, or otherwise do what it takes to avoid getting pregnant.

Shame on the Supreme Court for taking those things away!

And naturally, the moral onus on the men for pregnancies is defunct!

Has anyone out there ever seen a "pro-choice" advertisement that actually spelled out the subject of the "choice"? I keep hearing the phrase - "A woman's right to choose!" - repeated endlessly, and innocuously, as though some evil force were scheming to snatch away a womans right to select whichever shampoo or leather handbag pleased them. If the "pro-choice" people are so proud of their stance, let them pronounce it without euphemism or artifice. Let's see how that goes over with the voters.

Kerry's ad mimics the claims of doomsayers at national abortion advocacy groups, namely that the Supreme Court is one vote away from overturning abortion.

They are liars. If the Roe v. Wade decision were to be overturned it would simply revert matters to where they stood before that, i.e., a matter for state legislatures to address.

But it would sweep away (with good reason) the tortured legal "reasoning" that substituted for clear-thinking and straightforward interpretation of Constitutional intent. That specifically being the shadow-of-a-ghost-of-a-penumbra-of-a-right grasping at straws to justify a murderous and barbaric process.

The right to choose what, Sen. Kerry? Tell us! For some reason, you folks never complete that sentence. I suspect that you do not want your listeners to complete the sentence in their own minds, either.

We're not talking about a generic "right to choose", as if the eeeevil Republicans were threatening to take away our right to select between cherry vanilla and mint chocolate chip ice cream. We're talking about the right to choose to kill one's unborn child.

Do you have the courage to come right out and say that? Coward.
