I didn't leave the Dodgers and the Democrats; they left me. [Democrat is an Oxymoron]
Orange County Register - commentary ^ | 4/20/2004 | Anthony Lee

From blue to red

I didn't leave the Dodgers and the Democrats; they left me.

At the Angels home opener last Tuesday, I overcame
years of denial, followed my heart and bought my first
Angels cap, completing my transformation from Dodgers
to Angels fan.

My change in allegiances from blue to red on the
baseball field coincided with my switch from blue-state
Democrat to red-state Republican a month ago, when I at
last came to see that "conservative Democrat" was an
oxymoron.

Let me try to explain.

I was raised by a father who drove us an hour to Dodger
Stadium....

(excerpt) I had to excerpt from this newspaper, see

link for rest of the commentary.

treacherous b*stard. and ignorant about baseball, too.

if he would abandon the dodgers for the angels, he would
abondon the GOP to rejoin the dems at the drop of a hat.

either a crack addled recovery baby, or he's been totally
saturated with socal culture of non commitment. (And I was
born in LA County)

I thought it was a great article, it mirrored a lot of my thinking when I made the transition (not from Dodgers to Angles, my heart will always belong to the Padres) but from Democrat to Republican.

padres fans you HAVE to have respect for. angels fans
are a bunch of bandwagon loading, non-pedigreed, boorish
little churls that are attracted to a ready-made
winner without any real effort or emotional investment.

show me an angel fan that can't produce a circa-1970
red-and-black cap with the capital "A" graced with a
thin halo, and I'll show you someone with damn near
terminal ADD.

Thank you for your "annoying" input! ;)

My in-laws have also seen the light. They were life-long Dems, but voted for GWB in 2000. And will be doing so again. Gun rights was the turning point for them.

1988 seems like so long ago for Dodger fans. This could be the year. Seriously. I mean it this time. Really.

thin ice here. hard to comment without running the
suicidal risk of offending the baseball g*ds.

I'll bet the writer of this article switched parties
becaue ahhnold made the GOP look trendier than
gray davis and the forlorn dems. this person is just
not to be trusted; certainly not at first.

[can anybody tell that this is a bit of a hot-botton
issue for me :o ]

The last time I saw the Dodgers play, it was at Ebbets field.

When the Giants played against the Angels in the 2002 World Series I was personally conflicted. I grew up a hard core Giants fan. However, seeing the differences between the Giants and Angels fans at the games was something I could not ignore. Giants fans includes many very wierd looking people, and the typical contingent of SF's version of the "Sex and the City" crowd. Godless, drunk, coastal elitist to the hilt. Contrast that with the Angels fans. Families, God Fearing, humble, plainly dressed, etc. I admit I am painting with a broad brush here but it's to make a point. Significantly, substantial numbers of the Angels fans were clasping their hands in prayer. I struggled to find any such fans (certainly there were a few, but not very many) amongst the Giants fans. I am convinced that the prayers of the Angels fans had an effect. It strengthened my own faith. As a secondary effect, my ties to this God forsaken place were weakened.

Image is important. Bush tries to portray Kerry as an elite Frenchie and himself as a regular Joe for good reason.

As far as rooting for the regular Joe in baseball, I've got three words for the High-falootin' Yanks: Gabe Bleepin' Kapler!

Please read my post #5 carefully. I know that it is real annoying to have to enter a user-name and I understand completely that it is incredibly annoying to have to enter a password but that's what some newspapers force people to do to read their articles. I know we have to excerpt a lot of articles and not post them in their entirety here, but that's the way it is. We just have to go through the annoying login procedure.

I hope that's clear, if not FReepmail me and I'll provide more indepth directions on how to log in and read the article! ;-)
