RANGER CREED Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession. I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit-de-corps of the Rangers. Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, or air. I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other soldier. Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong, and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my fair share of the tasks, whatever it may be one hundred percent and then some. Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well-trained soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress, and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow. Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country. Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission though I be the lone survivor. |
I pulled this from the best Ranger Competition Web site, the competition started today.
Lousy way to start the day with news of the death of a fellow Ranger.

Lousy way to start the day with news of the death of a fellow Ranger. Yes, it is, as it is to read about all of our military personnel giving their lives for our security and freedom. Ranger Tillman's death just hits a little harder because we know what he went through and what he gained to become one of us.

Proud Dad of a 29-year-old 2LT who graduated Ranger Class 4-04 on March 12th. I was there to pin his Tab on at the awesome ceremony. All I could think of while spending the weekend at Fort Benning was, "Where do they find these guys?"
To: leadpenny
Congratulations to your son for not only surviving, but earning the tab as well.
"Where do they find these guys?"
That's the beauty of it, they don't have to. That's why Sua Sponte fit's so perfectly. It means "Of Their Own Accord". Your son and Ranger Tillman are just several of many examples of that simple motto.

You answered your own question.
Be proud, not every dad gets to have a Ranger for a son. It takes an extra something deep inside to be a Ranger, and not all of us have it.
I'm sure Ranger Tillman's parents, although grieveng, are also very proud.
My dad had to settle for a Pathfinder.
(you know, the guys that go in BEFORE the Rangers!)

There were so many things that impressed me. Two Hundred and Eighty Eight started the class. One Hundred and Nine graduated. Many of those recycled will finish in later classes. Most impressive was that there were probably three times as many guests and spectators as there were graduates. Retired Rangers show up just to be part of it.
I'm retired Army and flew helicopters, so that part of the demo (rapelling, extrations, hanging on the ropes, etc) was pretty exciting, but the three cadre NCO's and their narrator who put on the hand-to-hand combat demo were beyond awesome. The Ranger Brigade CSM was born the year before I enlisted in the Army (61). It was good to be around some of the Army's finest.
My son is still at Benning going through the Mortar Leaders Course and will then catch up with one of the Bdes. of the 25th ID. One is in Iraq and the other is on it's way to Afghanistan. I'll talk to him this weekend.

(with apologies to the forum...I'm putting this on the Pat Tillman threads for
publicity and to bump the threads. My apologies in advance if this is already
common knowledge.)
I just heard on ABC Radio News that a sports agent informed Pat Tillman of the
interest that the Seattle Seahawks had in him (last year?).
Tillman told the agent that he (Tillman) could have get his release from the service
but that he had made his committment and would stay in the military.
If true as reported, the Tillman legacy just got a little larger.
