No-Carb Eating Couple Booted From Buffet for Eating Too Much Beef

Apr 23, 2004

The Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A couple on a low-carb diet were kicked out of a buffet restaurant after the manager said they'd eaten too much roast beef. Sui Amaama, who along with his wife have been on the Atkins Diet for two weeks, was "It's so embarrassing actually," said Isabelle Leota, Amaama's wife. "We went in to have dinner, we were under the impression Chuck-A-Rama was an all-you-can-eat establishment."

Not so, said Jack Johanson, the restaurant chain's district manager.

"We've never claimed to be an all-you-can-eat establishment," said Johanson. "Our understanding is a buffet is just a style of eating."

The general manager who was carving the meat Tuesday became concerned about having enough for other patrons and asked Amaama to stop, Johanson said.

Offended, the couple asked for a refund. The manager refused and called police when they would not leave.

The couple said they have eaten at Chuck-A-Rama's $8.99 buffet at least twice a week, but did not plan to return.

I've seen this photograph before and the couple in the
photo look greasy, smelly and unkempt. I can't imagine
being in the same room with them.

The manager is acting like an idiot.

And doesn't the inclusion of the words "Chuck" and "Rama" in the restaurant's name downright guarantee a copious supply of MEAT? Come ON!

Well, Thank you but, I am the reason The Golden Corral went to charging by weight on the carry-out buffet. They used to give you a 9" square styrofoam lunch tray box thingy, a 5" square plastic salad box and a plastic ice cream bowl with a lid and you could pay your $5.99 for the lunchtime buffet and go fill up. Heh, heh, heh... I could eat roasted chicken, wings, ribs, roast beef, etc... for a week on that $5.99.

my opinion is these people were hogs and they shouldn't think they can hog everyone elses roast beef,, I know I'd be pissed if I came in an hour later and all the beef was gone because a couple ate 5 pounds of beef,, you just know when other diners watch these people woofing down the roast beef they jump up and fill their plates,, it's the domino theory,, half those other people might never have even eaten any beef that night or gotten another helping,,, The difference beween making and losing money in the restaurant business is a fine line,, If it was all you can eat roast beef nite I would agree but those people were inconsiderate of all the other diners,, they are getting to eat for $8.99 because people get a variety of foods in a buffet and everyone gets to sample but if everyone eats nothing but the most expensive entre then the place is out of business,, but what do those pigs care? they will just go down the road and ruin the next place for everyone,,,,,

Hey, if God didn't want us to eat animals he wouldn't have made them out of meat.

(OK, that's enough out of me on this topic. Sorry.)

My wife and I have been on Atkins since last November. My wife has dropped 40 pounds. I've dropped 31. We went to Golden Corral last week. It is an all you can eat buffet too. The place is loaded with elephant and hippo sized customers. We picked out chicken, pot roast, a single burger patty, some tuna salad and a small green salad from the bar. Ice tea (unsweetened) to drink. One small plate was just fine. No trips to the dessert bar. It is possible to patronize those kinds of places, eat well and not be a totally disgusting pig.

Our local Mongolian barbecue operates the same way. Even with an "all you can eat" policy, I always stop at one plate. It's economical, tasty and I'm losing weight. I head to my basement to lift weights 3 nights a week. My wife hits the treadmill for 45 minutes. We're turning fat into lean muscle. We've had no cases of sickness even when people around us had flu and colds. Atkins seems to be good for the immune system too.

The lady who runs the Mongolian barbecue has our routine figured out. No rice. No soup. No fried eggroll. My preferred drink lands at the table while I put 4 tomato slices, 4 broccoli sprigs, onions and mushrooms in the bottom of the bowl. The veggies are topped with slices of chicken, pork and beef. A run down the sauce line adds fresh chopped garlic, 2 scoops of garlic oil, 1 scoop of sesame oil, 1 scoop of Mongolian sauce, 1 scoop of Japeno sauce and 5 tablespoons of extra hot chili sauce. She does the "stir fry" while I make a salad of iceberg lettuce, grated cheddar cheese, a scoop of Bleu Cheese dressing, a sprinkle of bacon bits and sunflower seeds. The bottom line is $7.40.

How unfortunate. If buffets aren't all you can eat, the proprietors have a responsibility to indicate so. Asking people to leave is embarassing for the patrons. I would be very insulted if this happened to me. Shame on the establishment for doing this.

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of Chuck as in "up-Chuck".

I would NEVER name an eating establishment a name that would almost certainly be misconstrued as "Barf a Rama"

Must be some truth to that. I was lucky enough to avoid the flu this past season, even though every one had it around me.

I started it in November also, have dropped #25 lbs so far. I'm just getting over a very mild cold now, only one I've had in a year.

Congrats to you and the Mrs.

Buffets should go back to just being plain old buffets. Leave off the "all you can eat" part. If someone is going to make a pig of himself and eat 12 slices of roast beef he will do it even if he isn't told it an "all you can eat" buffet. I think we are just getting all these folks excited about food to much using the words "all you can eat", it brings out the worst in some folks. I think the restaurant owner should have the right to kick out people who eat to much roast beef. Maybe a small print disclaimer that can be signed upon entering as to what "all you can eat" really means, reminding people that the restaurant will have to go out of business if people abuse a good thing, and they do all the time. Buffets are so nice because no time is wasted waiting for food to be prepared but if a few fat slobs ruin it for everyone than no buffet. Chop chop no eggroll for you - you eat to much - out you go.
