Shocking film reignites abortion debate
Herald Sun ^ | April 22, 2004 | Ben English

THE bloody reality of abortion was brought into British living rooms last night in a world TV first that has inflamed emotions and revived old divisions.

My Foetus, a 60-minute documentary shown at 11pm on Britain's Channel 4, shows footage of a four-week-old fetus being vacuumed from its mother's womb.

The documentary also shows images of the dismembered remains of 10, 11 and 21-week fetuses, their broken limbs measured by a tape.

Filmmaker Julia Black, 34, who herself had a late-term abortion when she was 21, said she was moved to make the documentary by her own wanted pregnancy later in life.

"It's still a subject that is taboo and not discussed openly and I wanted to kick-start debate by allowing both sides of the argument to actually look at what an abortion is," she said.

"Abortion is a legal procedure in Britain and is the world's most common surgical procedure, so I thought we should look at the images and then carry on the debate."

Channel 4 said it was sensitive to concerns the program might shock, but insisted it was about educating and feeding debate on an issue that has sparked strong emotions across Europe and the US.

"The point is that abortion is an incredibly common procedure, but we don't see the images and we should have the debate with the full knowledge of what is involved," a spokeswoman said.

"We are not just broadcasting this footage gratuitously.

"A warning will be shown prior to the show and there will be a helpline after."

From 1996 to 2000, an average of 170,000 abortions were carried out each year in England and Wales, according to the British Pregnancy Advisory Service.

Anti-abortion activists, who have long used graphic imagery of gruesome abortion procedures as publicity tools, welcomed the film.

But they said its very title implied a pro-choice bias.

"She calls the program My Foetus and if anybody has ever heard of a pregnant woman talking about her fetus, I'd like to meet them," said Comment

on Reproductive Ethics director Josephine Qunitavalle.

"There are two categories of human being: wanted and unwanted. The only difference between Julia's aborted fetus and her baby is whether they were wanted."

Ms Black, who is pro-choice, said in making the film she was forced to confront her own previously entrenched pro-choice views.

"When I interviewed a doctor about the unpleasantness of performing late abortions it was difficult to listen and not believe it was morally wrong.

"For many people there is no difference between me aborting my fetus at eight weeks and a woman aborting her fetus at 24 weeks, the legal limit for abortions in Britain.

"But for me, even after knowing the facts about abortion, there is a difference."

Journalist Lauren Booth, a pro-choicer who has also had an abortion, said she recoiled when watching the film's pivotal moment.

"My hand flew to my mouth in shock," she said.

"I swallowed. I didn't want to say it, but the word 'murder' came to my lips."

Abortion is not about saving women’s lives!

Total Abortions since 1973

44,670,812

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why the drop after 1960? (in deaths of women from illegal abortions)

The reasons were new and better antibiotics, better surgery and the establishment of intensive care units in hospitals. This was in the face of a rising population. Between 1967 and 1970 sixteen states legalized abortion. In most it was limited, only for rape, incest and severe fetal handicap (life of mother was legal in all states). There were two big exceptions — California in 1967, and New York in 1970 allowed abortion on demand. Now look at the chart carefully.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abortion Statistics - Decision to Have an Abortion (U.S.)

· 25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing

· 21.3% of women cannot afford a baby

· 14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child

· 12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy)

· 10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career

· 7.9% of women want no (more) children

· 3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health

2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So how many women’s lives have been saved by abortion?

Only about 3% of abortions since 1972 were reported to be “due to a risk to maternal health.” A reasonable person would recognize that not all of those cases represent a lethal risk. But let’s say they did. That means that nearly 45 million fetuses were butchered to save the lives of about 1.3 million women.

Abortion was legal in all 50 states prior to Roe v. Wade in cases of danger to the life of the woman.

I wonder if BBC America will show this in primetime. I know no major American network would dare show it, well maybe Fox.

Go ahead, lady, get the word out--it's MURDER, just as you "almost thought." These murderous women are so deep in denial they are drowning.

The lifetime of every living human being alive at this moment began at conception, as evidenced by the first cell division of their organismal body. Yeah, every alive human being is an organism and began their lifetime as an organism when they were conceived, in or outside a woman's body. The abortion champions want a special right to hire serial killers to off unborn alive children, nothing more or less than that. And they know what they want is murdering alive human individuals, but they believe it is their 'birthright' as living in post-Roe America. Sick people ...

It was actually a very informative programme, though the presenter did state that she is a fervent supporter of a woman's 'right to choose'.

She also made an interesting point, she showed footage of the latest ultra-sound scanning which showed an unborn child moving, and sucking its thumb; she believed that this image would be more powerfully pro-life than that of post-operative foetuses.

There was much emphasis on the statistic that most abortions are in the first 10 weeks (i.e., casting doubt on the images of older children who had been aborted).

The worst moments were the comments from the abortion providers. One referring to performing late-term abortions said that he did not like it, but that one has to think of the children (i.e., he is killing the child for the child's sake). Then having shown the abortion procedure, the nurse who carried it out examined the foetus, and actually spoke about showing it respect!

I suspect that the film will confirm the pro-life tendancies of those who realise that it is murder; but that given its 'balanced' coverage pro-abortionite will find their own justifications in it also. After watching it, I sat frozen for a couple of minutes; it was really shocking.

I would encourage everyone to read the link titled
"Why the drop after 1960?" in post number 4.
It takes 10-15 minutes to read and is well worth it.

Of course it did. Even a child knows right from wrong, harm from benefit and human life from inanimate object.

How many people have died from legal abortions since 1973.

I couldn't find that number. Many are not recorded as deaths due to abortion but rather listed as death due to infection or some other term referring to the complication that occurs.

I will try again to find a statistic on that.

One of the most horrific statistics never tied accurately to the abortion holocaust (yes, this rite of feminist satanic origin has killed millions and millions of Americans, far more than the number of women who've ever died due to abortion) is the number of suicides (men and women) that came to be because of the awakening to the horrific anti-life act they've committed. God's still small voice within cannot be squelched forever by everyone who participates in this terrible act of serial killing. I am living proof of that, but that's a story for another thread.

Here is an interesting article on why there aren't good statistics about the morbidity rate for abortions.

Here is a CDC (Center for Disease Control) article with numerous tables and charts on abortion. It starts with a single sentence:

Problem/Condition: In 1969, CDC began abortion surveillance to document the number and characteristics of women obtaining legal induced abortions, to monitor unintended pregnancy, and to assist efforts to identify and reduce preventable causes of morbidity and mortality associated with abortions.

But it never gets around to documenting the actual rate of morbidity in currently legal abortions.

Still looking.

I can't find a figure. It is interesting that I also cannot find a figure for how many women's lives were saved by having an abortion. Just the vague "risk to maternal health" figure of 2.8%.

The morbidity rate for fetuses undergoing abortion is a solid 100%.

Thank you both for your encouragement.

The biggest foe of the "pro-choice" crowd is the truth.

The simple wisdom of this statement belies the profound and powerful concept it rests upon. Truth is never-changing and readily accessible to the mind that is open and sincerely seeking it. Lies are illusions that shift and change, cannot be firmly grasped and resist or flee from the interrogations of logic and honest inquiry.

Regardless of what men think or say or do life begins at conception as it always has and always will.
Regardless of what men know or understand about the mechanics of it; causes have effects and actions (like the taking of life) have certain and inevitable consequences.

Stand on the truth. Rest your mind on it, freely share it when asked, take it with you where ever you go and offer it kindly to those who are shaken, bruised and abandoned by lies. By its very nature the truth will outshine the lie because a lie has no light in it to shine.
