They will probably be doing their homework themselves if you'll let them get on the computers.

I missed him too.
But we can still poke his smokin' corpse before covering it in kitty litter!

I HAVE to get a troll doll or something and get a pic of it half buried in kitty litter..

I'm wondering if I should ask Registered or some other pic manip talented FReeper to make such an image, as it would be much more amusing then, considering it'd have artistic style and taste then.

"...but sweetheart...spellcheck is your friend..."

I'm going to have to call you on that one. Spellcheck is a crutch; just like canned food is a crutch for people too stupid or lazy to learn how to cook.

What you're advising this [obvious troll] idiot is to eat canned food for the rest of his life.

On the other hand, I type over 100 words per minute. The last typing test I performed, ages ago, was a standard five-minute test, which is brutal. My score was 109wpm, with three errors total.

My point is, that for a person like myself, spellcheck is not a crutch but a tool, for quickly ferreting out the typos that inevitably crop up. For idiots like the within troll, it's a guarantee of permanent illiteracy.

Maybe it's a crutch. However, I have found myself struggling to remember a word that I don't normally use. I know that it is the most appropriate word for what I'm trying to convey, but sometimes I get a brain fart, and I need a dictionary, or spell check. I have found myself substituting other words instead of the one that came to mind, just to lower the frustration level.

I wish I could type 100 wpm. When I get going, it's usually 60-70 wpm. I rely on spell check when I'm uncertain about a word. I'll review my posts and a word just doesn't look right, so I run it through spell check.

I know what you're saying about literacy levels. It's good manners to at least try and post a coherent post on a message board, so let them use spell check...

I too sometimes go blank on a word I know how to spell. That's why I recommend you buy "Webster's instant Word Guide - 35,000 Words Spelled and Divided". It has a compact size. I keep mine handy all the time.

I consider myself an excellent speller due to the fact that I read a lot; so basically osmosis at work. For new words, I use either the Webster book mentioned above, or my 50-pound dictionary. Generally with new words, I only require "one look" and it's mine for life.

Just curious, but did you go to parochial school? I did, and that's one thing I came away with...spelling skills. I learned more in Catholic school in 5 years, than I did the remaining 7 years of public school. My kids are reasonably intelligent, but their spelling and grammar makes me pull my hair out.

I was also a bookworm growing up. I remember that we had "free reading" during 5th grade, so I chose "The Rise And Fall of the Third Reich". By the time I was done pestering Mrs. Harrison on the proper pronunciation of "obersturbengroupenfuhrer", The book disappeared, never to be seen again. That's the thing. I wasn't allowed to watch too much tv...maybe that's the problem with kids today. My youngest kids read the articles with me here on Free Republic. I lure them in with the funny pics ;-)

I'll keep an eye out for that dictionary. We need a new one.

No, I went to public school, K-12. As a kid, I took to reading early on. Although I read a lot of books, the three that stand out in my memory are: Logan's Run (3rd grade), Lord of the Flies (5th grade) and 1984 (6th grade).

I remember the day when, in fifth grade, we were supposed to show up with our book selection. My fifth grade teacher was a woman straight out of "central casting", someone who would be called "Mrs. Crabapple" or the like. She started walking up and down the rows of desks viewing and commenting upon the the books my classmates had selected.

She was nodding and approving of all of them, all of them being mostly fifth grade level drivel.

Then she got to my desk, saw Lord of the Rings, and literally freaked out. She read me the "riot act" and demanded I select a more "suitable" book to read for our book report assignment. I pretended to "succumb", and of course, read the book anyway.

read the Communist Manifesto (it will be in your schools library [yes, that place with all the books]).

Actually, a better place to look would be on the wall of the principals office.

Yeah, checked this out yesterday.
Gotta love dead's diorama idea.
I'd do that just to be a jerk to teh weeping reds in school.. but since i'm not in school anymore that kinda defeats my purposes somewhat.
*sigh*
But I love that one!
