I've heard about rumors that many Muslims (including a sizable contingent in Iran) believe that President Bush is somehow the "Messiah." I'm not exactly sure how best to describe this (apparently an old caliph disappeared and will return or something), but I've heard that the closeness of the 2000 election has something to do with it. Got any information to clear this up?

Well, this is an interesting twist on things! Thanks for the ping -- this is the first Ive heard of this!
Heres the thread to which dufekin is referring:
IRAN: God Wills It, But The People Don't Want It (Iranian youths calling Bush "the messiah")

See especially dufekins post #83 on that thread.
I have to take it that the Iranian youths are calling Bush "the Messiah" in an analogous use of the term, given that the Shiite version of the Messiah -- or Mahdi -- is someone who is supposed to be someone whos over 1100 years old!
But it is a tremendous compliment to Bush, and a voice of hope that the evil-doers ruling Iran will be overthrown either directly by America, or with our assistance.
