N.Y. Suitcase Scares Spur Terror 'Dry Run' Fear (Terrorists probing defenses?)

Police fear five empty suitcases left at Penn Station, New York FBI headquarters and other security hot spots in early April were a test by terrorists bent on a Madrid-type attack on commuter rails, The Post has learned.

A confidential Metropolitan Transit Authority police bulletin, titled "Possible Surveillance Testing Tactics," reveals K-9 cops are on edge over a "suspicious packages pattern" they encountered between the last week of March and the first week of April.

There is not the slightest doubt that al Queda is in the US and is researching, probing, and preparing for attack.

"Officials have not ruled out the chance the bags were left by pranksters or derelicts."

I don't think a derelict would leave an empty suitcase. Seems silly for a terrorist to do so anyway, why wouldn't you put something in it.

I was on the ferry between Jersey City and NYC about a year after 9/11 (I guess it was). The ferry left right from where the WTC used to be. There was an unattended back pack found, the passengers actually said "Throw it overboard" but the conductor (whatever you call the conducter on a boat! I don't know) didn't. When we got to the Jersey side there was a fellow there to claim it. Lucky him it didn't get tossed, all thanks to the conductor. I still think it should have been tossed.

At Penn Station, a beat-up suitcase was found in the main waiting room at 9:40 a.m. on April 1, sources said.

So... somebody left a beat-up empty suitcase in a train waiting room.

Most suitcases that are of no longer use are usually emptied before discarding or even abandoning.

No?

That's an older map too. Remember a year or so ago they arrested the brothers in Buffalo, NY? And Buffalo isn't even highlighted on this map for sheltering terrorists. I wonder how many MORE have moved in since???

The one hijacker stopped over in Portland, Maine the night before 9-11. We all are wondering who the heck he talked to!

Our Governor moved in over 1,200 Somali's several years ago to take over Lewiston, Maine. It's a mess.

Most suitcases that are of no longer use are usually emptied before discarding or even abandoning. No?

What's odd is that they found 5 of them - in very prominent places.

" Police fear five empty suitcases left at Penn Station, New York FBI headquarters and other security hot spots in early April were a test by terrorists bent on a Madrid-type attack on commuter rails"

Also, what the police thought was odd that ALL of them were empty - usually a misplaced/lost/discarded suitcase has something in it. Local news reports that it was unnerving even for veteran NY police.

your post reminded me -

In NJ there are signs along the highways (the electronic type) that say "REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY" - with a phone number, it's terror related

They are fairly new, and I've not yet seen these signs in neighboring states - I think they are unnerving because it's obvious we all need to be watching out.

I tend to agree with you!
A "dry run" with suitcases would seem to be to much of a tip-off!

Just testing to see if the cops will jump right on a "ownerless" suitcase.
And if they are vigilant enough to arrest the person who abandons it.
As well as how much time the person dropping off the case would have to get away
(if they are the sort of Islamic who would like to do more than one mission).

This was a nice little probing test...the only liability was they could
be stopped by a cop and "play dumb" and say they were coming back for the bag
and "didn't understand the problem".

I don't ride the buses, so I don't know what's going on with them...

They're still doing dry runs on the planes, to see what weapons they can slip thru.

I remember an incident sometime after the Oklahoma City bombings, when I was helping a gentleman at the counter where I worked at my federal workplace, and another gentleman came in pushing a push cart, and he said to me, "I'm going to leave this here while I go to the bathroom." The other guy and I almost jumped out of the room in fear. I told the pushcart person, "No you won't leave that here, you'll take it with you."

One would think that the FBI could close those cells. Sure they may or may not be getting info through them, but you'd think rounding up all those involved would eliminte a great deal of the threat.

Better start exporting the muslims NOW.

Unfortunately as far as immigration and border control goes, this is the 12th year of the Clinton administration.

Not only is Bush not going to deport the muslim aliens that pose such a clear and present danger, he's actually importing about 100,000 new alien muslims yearly as legal green-carded immigrants.
