What is SPANISH for "flip flop?" Help FReep JOHN KERRY in Los Angeles on CINCO de MAYO (5/5/04)
Kerry is Coming!! (California) ^ | May 2, 2004 | RonDog

Posted on 05/02/2004 6:46:35 PM PDT by RonDog

Thanks to the "eagle eyes" of FReeper markv840, we found THIS interesting announcement on the official JohnKerry.com website:

Wednesday, May 5 - California
Los Angeles, CA
John Kerry will host an event in Los Angeles, CA.

Check back soon for details!

Wednesday, May 5...
...also known around here as:
Cinco de Mayo...
We expect him to give some sort of major policy address on IMMIGRATION (i.e., PANDER to the Latino community) - particlarly since we read THIS (short excerpt) from the Los Angeles Times:
May 1, 2004

THE NATION
Dueling Immigration Ideas Frame a Key Election Issue
Democrats counter Bush's guest-worker concept with a move toward citizenship.

By Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats, playing catch-up with President Bush's guest-worker proposal, plan to introduce an immigration reform bill Tuesday that would put millions of illegal immigrants on the path to citizenship but restrict the entry of future workers.

The Democratic plan would offer green cards and permanent resident status to all immigrants who have been in the United States at least five years, can prove they have worked at least 24 months and have passed background and medical checks. It also would loosen quotas that keep many immigrants from bringing relatives into the United States...

-- snip --

...The Los Angeles Times obtained a detailed summary of the Democratic bill, which was drafted by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.).

The bill is an effort to recapture a traditionally Democratic issue from President Bush, who got out in front by proposing a new guest-worker plan that would allow as many as 12 million illegal immigrants to obtain temporary legal status...

-- snip --

...Release of the Democratic blueprint is planned for the eve of Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican patriotic observance commemorating the 1862 defeat of French invaders at the Battle of Puebla...

Here is pennboricua's marvelous picture of some MONSTER "flip flops..."

Also from the that thread:
To: pennboricua
Take a page from the scene in Monty Python's "Life of Brian" where they hoisted a sandal on a pole.

Mount a pair of flip-flops on a 10-foot pole and just silently stand there - speaking volumes. A little twirl once in a while might draw the cameras.

If this catches on they may start banning you when they see the poles, so Plan B would have a telescoping version . . . It might also pay to have some video cameras ready to catch them trying to tear your display down.

Or . . . Giant pics of Kerry's face - one side showing him facing left, the other facing right. The dems will take you for a supporter - Then just silently flip-flop the picture while he talks - you'll get your message across without saying a word - very effective.

After-freep report: John F. Kerry visits Wheeling, W.Va.
Wheeing News-Register and personal account ^ | April 26, 2004 | mountaineer
Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:37 PM PDT by mountaineer

Wheeling's afternoon paper reported:

Nearly 1,000 people from across the Ohio Valley turned out this morning at Wheeling Park's White Palace to listen to Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry as he kicked off his "Jobs First Bus Tour" of four key election states...

--snip --

Okay, that's one account. Here's mine:

I arrived at Wheeling Park's White Palace around 8:30 a.m. and stood near the main driveway with my signs. One had photos of waffles and said, "Where do you stand today, John?" The other said, "John Kerry said, 'Our Democracy is a Farce,' Nov. 2, 1971 at Bethany College. Maybe he should run for president of China - or France?" I also had an old pair of flipflops, which I smacked together for effect.

Shortly after I set up, fellow freeper sonsofliberty2000 showed up with a fine sign with a drawing of flipflops and a related message. We stood in the cool, damp weather for a while before deciding to to closer to the building. We received a few rude remarks and middle digits (Democrat IQ readings).

After a little while, a woman approached and asked whether we'd seen the kids from the local Catholic high school, as they were going to bring pro-life signs. We said we hadn't, but it wasn't long before about two dozen fine young people arrived.

Also joining us were some Bush campaign people, including one young man dressed as the dolphin Flipper (get it? Flip flop? Flipper?)
Some moms with small children also joined us a little later, and they made pro-life signs.

One of the guys had a bullhorn, and we regaled the assembled Dems (mostly union) with various chants. Kerry was at least 45 minutes late (emulating Bill Clinton), and we couldn't see him sneak in the back way. At our peak, we had about 40 on our side.

The event was supposed to last from 10:30 a.m. - noon, but it was well after noon before the attendees started leaving. Kerry was taking his time, even though he already was late for his next appearance in Washington, Pa.

Our GOP operatives told us that he's really getting upset at the protesters greeting him wherever he goes, so keep up the good work, freepers and others!

Ron, most times, when translating from English to Spanish you have to use a Latinate form of the word in question. I would suggest capricious, which, in Spanish would be CAPRICIOSO.

I believe this word, although not perfect, is the closest translation and the one Spanish speakers use to describe a person who "flip-flops".

How about the word in Spanish, that gets the same idea across?

Somehow I don't think people would get the point using the word "sandal".

HAHAHA, I 've been thinking about this Kerry thing for a few days now, and Cinco de mayo never crossed my mind. IMO, Flip-flops are best translated "chanclas", but I'm told that they are known as "huaraches" in Mexico. I can ask around for some good spanish phrases to put on posters and stuff like that. Ping me if you have any translation issues, I know just the right person to take care of any english-spanish (and vice versa) translation needs.

I'd imagine that Spanglish for "flip flop" would be "flip flop." Most of those voting for Kerry would probably speak English.

Like other politicians, Kerry tells one thing to one group and another to another group. He's going to promise "Hispanics" Open Borders, but at the same time he's going to promise other Californians jobs: http://www.johnkerry.com/states/ca/jobs.html

What isn't mentioned is the effect those millions of low-wage workers would have on Kerry's base. Someone should tell them. If a few African-Americans or Hispanic-Americans started peeling off the Kerry base, that might wake him up. That in turn might have an effect on Teddy Kennedy and even Jorge.

"A perfect 10 FlipFlop"

John Kerry political cartoon.

May 1, 2004...

When it comes to flipflopping Sen. John Kerry just took a 10 out of 10 in style, performance and substance.

Kerry now admits that weapons of mass destruction may still be found. Oh my, how does he reconcile such statements as: "George Bush sold us on going to war with Iraq based on the threat of weapons of mass destruction. But we still haven't found them."

He has frequently stated that, "We were misled about weapons of mass destruction." But this week in an interview with Chris Matthews, ABC’s “Hardball”, Kerry offered this statement regarding WMDs:

KERRY:  It appears, as they peel away the weapons of mass destruction issue—and we may yet find them, Chris.  Look, I want to make it clear.  Who knows if a month from now, three months from now, you find some weapons?  You may.

I also like the "fish" metaphor...
What are some good Spanish words for "fish?"
Even though the TV "Flipper" was a DOLPHIN, and NOT a stictly speaking a FISH...
...it seems to me that a "fish" word might neatly capture BOTH connotations:
- a "fish out of water" - flopping around on the floor,
- a "cold fish" - with no personality,
- "fishing" around for the right position to take, etc.

What about the Spanish/Puerto Rican word for "grunion?"
These stupid little fish are VERY well known in California for the mindless mass "flip-flopping" on the beaches out here...

From entertainment.signonsandiego.com:

Grunion Run
Urban legend or scaly squirmers, the grunion are running again.

Event Profile

Some think the grunion runs are an urban legend, but, elusive and often appearing very late at night, the grunion are real and the runs are a curious stunt of nature to behold -- if you can stay up that late.

What they are: Grunion are small sardine-shaped silvery fish that ride the waves in Del Mar City Beach, La Jolla Shores, Mission Beach and Silver Strand Beach up onto the sand to procreate, making for a veritable sea of squirming 4-8 inch fish out of water.

The deal is: The female grunion buries herself in the sand to lay her eggs and the male wraps himself around her to fertilize them -- a female's eggs might be fertilized by up to eight males in one night. Then they wait for a wave to take them back out to sea...

Meet the Grunion

From TideLines, Spring 2003
CREATURE FEATURE

What better excuse could you think of to sit on southern California’s sandy shore at night with some friends than to be at a "grunion run?" With excuses like this no wonder many people think that grunion runs are some kind of "snipe hunt" or our own version of the "submarine races!" But it does happen, as probably millions of people have witnessed, these small fish (to 7.5”) wash themselves up on the beach 3-4 nights after the new and full moon (syzygy tide conditions) from March through August.

Grunion (Leuresthes tenuis) is a member of the Silversides family of fish, which include the topsmelt and jacksmelt. Grunion range from San Francisco to Baja and are mostly found south of Point Conception. The unique thing about the grunion is not that its common name comes from a Spanish word that refers to a grunting sound they are supposed to make when spawning...

Another word you could use is Descarado which is technically someone without a face, but is used when you want to call someone shameless or hypocrite; and it's not as strong as sin vergenza. Another suggestion I got is Veleta, which translates as wind vane, or weather vane; personally I think this would be a very good name for Kerry (because, like him, it moves with the direction of the wind).

From pittsburghlive.com:
Kerry's flips & flops: Meet Sen. Fish

Sunday, March 14, 2004

John Kerry says he has no intention of apologizing for calling Republicans "the most crooked ... lying group that I've ever seen." After all, spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter says, it was in response to the "high level ... Republican attack machine" that's been working "to smear" Democrats.

"We're trying to make this campaign about issues," she said. "Republicans are making it about attacks."

Ah, there it is -- the Kerry campaign strategy: Should anyone question your record on the issues, it's an "attack" and a "smear." Such a tactic is the first refuge of liberal scoundrels who have a record as abysmal as Mr. Kerry's.

John Kerry is the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate. And if he's consistent about anything, it's his inconsistencies. Sen. Fish's flips and flops are so legion that they total 37 pages on the Google Internet search engine...

In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery were disconsolate at the loss.

Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year in May and is known as Sinko de Mayo;^}
