Al Reuters takes it for granted that the general should be punished for these remarks, but the most scurrilous remarks about Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism are noisily defended as free speech.

Indeed, there a pecking order in this mediatarian re-write of civil liberties.
Atheists may publicly denounce any religion, even including Islam.
Muslims may denounce any other religion, especially Judaism and Christianity, even to the point of advocating genocide.
Hindus may criticize any religion except Islam, lest they incite the rage of the ummah.
Jews may criticize Christianity, so long as they are not Conservative Jews attacking liberal collaborator denominations.
Christians must stay silent, unless they are pacifists and collaborators, in which case they criticize only Conservative Christians anyway.

Since they are the darlings of the ACLU and therefore exempt from media-prescribed PC rules, the American Atheists actually get to say some worthwhile and amusing things about Islam, which they persist in calling Mohammedanism (imagine the reaction if, say, Jerry Falwell called it that):
"When in Mecca kissing the Ka‘aba, it is also incumbent upon pilgrims to kill an animal in the Mina valley on the tenth day of the month of pilgrimage, since Allah, like the Yahweh of the Jews, is believed to enjoy having animals killed for his viewing pleasure. (It is amusing to imagine what will happen if P.E.T.A. and the Animal Liberation Front ever get wind of this. How Muslims would deal with the threat of animal-rights terrorism would be something worth watching closely.)"
