Statements following the incident in Athens
05 May 2004
Following the incident this morning in Athens, which caused no injuries or significant material damage, the Greek government and the IOC issued the following statements:
Greek government statement
Statement by the Minister of State and Greek government spokesperson, Mr Theodoros Roussopoulos, regarding the security of the Olympic Games:
According to the up-to-date evidence, this incident is not connected to Olympic preparations. The Greek government treats even isolated incidences with the necessary sense of seriousness and responsibility. The Greek authorities, in cooperation with the relevant European, US and NATO authorities, have designed a security system which guarantees the safety of the Athens Olympic Games.
International Olympic Committee statement
The IOC understands from the Greek authorities that, so far, nothing indicates this mornings incident was related to preparations for this summers Olympic Games. We remain in contact with our Greek colleagues, who will keep us informed of any developments.

At the very beginning of the article that you posted there is the words, "but no serious casualties..." What are they saying that some casualties mean more than others? To me any casualty is a serious casualty.

Proposal to the IOC: Move the Summer Olympics to another city - one that's already got the infrastructure and can handle the security. I got it ....... how about Sydney?

I dunno. I would actually guess that not many would choose to stay home. Combination of a couple of things... olympic-caliber athletes have a natural high order competition drive that overwhelmes everything else they might do. They've already given up a good portion of their lives to focus on just this event. Little would seem to be able to get in the way. Combine this with the basic statistical likelihood that even if something really bad happens in Athens, the risk for any individual athlete is still pretty small. I'd bet most of them would still go, even with an active and foreseeable threat. On one hand, I would agree with you. But if the US Olympic committee OR the various sports federations say "stay home", the athletes stay home. I know that the USA Gymnastics organization was not letting its athletes travel to foreign countries in the immediate months following 9-11 (just as an example).

There are 100 days to go for the Athens games to start. Last time that happened was in 1976 for the winter games which is much smaller in size of course when the games were forfeited by Denver and moved to Innsbruck Austria. I have a feeling the lead time for Innsbruck was a lot longer than 100 days.

Unless I miss something, when did car bombing become an Olympic sport? The minute Palestine fields an Olympic team.

According to the up-to-date evidence, this incident is not connected to Olympic preparations. Hmm, even though it occured exactly 100 days until the Olympics?

If ind it interesting that the police official described them as "sophisticated". I wonder if this was simply because one was timed to go off during the investigation or whether there's something more to it.

I suspect that this is a probing attack to see how officals operate. It may be Nov17 but they are networked with outher outfits.

Because the Episcopalians control the media?
