Kerry event FReeped today outside Woodrow Wilson High School in East LA
First of all let me say thank you to all those who were present today for the FReeping; We did a GREAT job, considering we didn't have much time to prepare, and that today is a weekday. I must say, I was somewhat disapointed that "Mr. Kerry" didn't get to see us, but as I'm sure, RonDog, and other FReepers present will tell you, we still got noticed by everyone else.
The highlight of the FReeping was of course "FLIPPER" (the dolphin); This guy stood there in a dolphin suit for some two hours, and let me tell you, IT WAS VERY HOT, that poor guy... RonDog also had the GREAT idea of bringing some "flipper" balloons which got a lot of attention. We had a lot of home made signs, and a few Bush/Cheney signs and stickers provided by Mr.Oscar Gutierrez, who also did a great job talking to some of the media people who were present. The flip-flops were EVERYWHERE, From a Flip-Flop shaped sign, to a bag full of flip-flops for everyone on the back.
Nonsurprisingly, there was some people who were really angry about us "ruining their party", there was some yelling, and more middle fingers than I could count; at the same time, there were some who waved and honked horns, I never get tired of this.

The theme of our protest will be "Flip Flops" and "Flipper."
Please bring plastic "flip flop" sandals -
and signs with LARGE block letters and SIMPLE messages, like: "Kerry = Flip Flop"
And if anyone can find a "Flipper the DOLPHIN" costume,

"Kerry voted FOR Cinco de Mayo,
before he voted AGAINST it."

Suddenly it was decided: My eight closest friends in the universefour lesbian couples with whom Ive spent birthdays, baby namings, holidays, and, in the case of Torie Osborn, eight happy years a decade or so agowere going to San Francisco to get married. And since California state legislators are empowered to perform marriages, they asked me to officiate. How very lesbian for an ex-partner to be officiating for Torie and her partner, Lydia Vaias, both of whom seemed quite happy with the idea. We would have been 10, plus me, but a few months before, Mary Newcombe had lost her sweet, brilliant, grounded partner, Jodi Curlee, so there was a bittersweet aura to the whole thing.
That wasnt the only bittersweet touch: Over the years so many of us had so firmly banished marriage from our minds that we had come to believe it was not a necessary addition to our commitments. This, even though these four couples had been together a total of 70-plus yearswith grown children from past marriages, adopted children, children they had given birth to in the relationship, and history history history. Until San Francisco, however, marriage just wasnt in their plans.
All eight women are activists, and certainly the civil-disobedience aspect of our actions was delicious. Giving and taking public vows on the steps of City Hall seemed a good way to declare our continuing fight for equality. And when I told my friend and colleague, state assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, what we were planning, she and her partner of almost 30 years, Sharon Stricker, asked if I might marry them as well...

Nearly 1,000 people from across the Ohio Valley turned out this morning at Wheeling Park's White Palace to listen to Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry as he kicked off his "Jobs First Bus Tour" of four key election states...

Okay, that's one account. Here's mine:
I arrived at Wheeling Park's White Palace around 8:30 a.m. and stood near the main driveway with my signs. One had photos of waffles and said, "Where do you stand today, John?" The other said, "John Kerry said, 'Our Democracy is a Farce,' Nov. 2, 1971 at Bethany College. Maybe he should run for president of China - or France?" I also had an old pair of flipflops, which I smacked together for effect.
Shortly after I set up, fellow freeper sonsofliberty2000 showed up with a fine sign with a drawing of flipflops and a related message. We stood in the cool, damp weather for a while before deciding to to closer to the building. We received a few rude remarks and middle digits (Democrat IQ readings).
After a little while, a woman approached and asked whether we'd seen the kids from the local Catholic high school, as they were going to bring pro-life signs. We said we hadn't, but it wasn't long before about two dozen fine young people arrived.
Also joining us were some Bush campaign people, including one young man dressed as the dolphin Flipper (get it? Flip flop? Flipper?)Some moms with small children also joined us a little later, and they made pro-life signs.One of the guys had a bullhorn, and we regaled the assembled Dems (mostly union) with various chants. Kerry was at least 45 minutes late (emulating Bill Clinton), and we couldn't see him sneak in the back way. At our peak, we had about 40 on our side.
The event was supposed to last from 10:30 a.m. - noon, but it was well after noon before the attendees started leaving. Kerry was taking his time, even though he already was late for his next appearance in Washington, Pa.

I estimate that the honor roll for this event was well over FORTY (40) people...The only BAD part about this FReep was the limited MEDIA coverage that we were able to capture. :(

Flipper the Dolphin was dragged into the political fray Monday as demonstrators waved inflatable dolphins and chanted anti-John Kerry slogans outside the Minneapolis Convention Center, where the Democrat was scheduled to speak.
About 50 supporters of President Bush had one thing to say: Kerry is a flipper -- he flip-flops.
"John Kerry stands on both sides of the issues," said Jake Grassel, state chairman for College Republicans, as he gripped one of several hockey sticks festooned with a dangling yellow flip-flop sandal. "Nobody really knows where he's going to stand..."
