After-action report: FReepers, "Flipper" - and "Flip Flop" Kerry in East Los Angeles (5/5)

Posted on 05/05/2004 5:13:09 PM PDT by markv840

Kerry event FReeped today outside Woodrow Wilson High School in East LA

First of all let me say thank you to all those who were present today for the FReeping; We did a GREAT job, considering we didn't have much time to prepare, and that today is a weekday. I must say, I was somewhat disapointed that "Mr. Kerry" didn't get to see us, but as I'm sure, RonDog, and other FReepers present will tell you, we still got noticed by everyone else.

The highlight of the FReeping was of course "FLIPPER" (the dolphin); This guy stood there in a dolphin suit for some two hours, and let me tell you, IT WAS VERY HOT, that poor guy... RonDog also had the GREAT idea of bringing some "flipper" balloons which got a lot of attention. We had a lot of home made signs, and a few Bush/Cheney signs and stickers provided by Mr.Oscar Gutierrez, who also did a great job talking to some of the media people who were present. The flip-flops were EVERYWHERE, From a Flip-Flop shaped sign, to a bag full of flip-flops for everyone on the back.

Nonsurprisingly, there was some people who were really angry about us "ruining their party", there was some yelling, and more middle fingers than I could count; at the same time, there were some who waved and honked horns, I never get tired of this.

GREAT JOB FReepers!!

P.S.: I will try to get you guys some pictures before the end of the day.

Villaraigosa is a national chairman for the Kerry campaign.

I didn't know that.

BTW, that is one weird picture of the gruesome twosome. Is Kerry picking his nose?

well, the "log cabin republicans" endorse 'Oscar'; the homosexual activist arm of the new-gop. for what it's worth. So I suppose old Oscar will not defend traditional marriage or Prop 22. in the CA legislature, if he wins. the log cabins also endorsed arnie for gov.

wee haw!

No thanks.

p.s. I believe oscar is the call screener or producer for doug macintyre on KABC radio 790 AM, midnight to 5 am.

we need true conservatives back in the GOP, not moderates,. moderates got us to where we are today.

I estimate that the honor roll for this event was well over FORTY (40) people, including SUBSTANTIAL groups from:
College Republicans - from Biola, Santa Monica College, Cal State Long Beach
Los Angeles County Republicans
and
Vietnamese Americans - who drove all the way from from Garden Grove.

Believe me when I say, I am neither cold nor timid and i am very devoted to the cause of freedom and liberty. And i had planned on going but couldnt make it.

Sorry.
I am just a little TIRED (and a bit cranky) after this INCREDIBLE (but exhausting) FReep.
At the risk of re-fighting the last election here in California, I will admit to being a PRAGMATIST - who will not allow the "perfect" to be the enemy of the "good."
Just as we needed ARNOLD to oust Gray Davis,
we now need OSCAR to oust Jackie Goldberg.
Since you may not know, **I** personally invited Oscar Gutierrez to this FReep because:
1 - Kerry's appearance was scheduled in HIS Assembly District,
2 - He is INTENSELY pro-Bush,
and
3 - His opponent in this year's race for the Caifornia State Assembly (45th A.D.) is the incumbent, Jackie Goldberg.

For better, for worse, for us
By Shelia Kuehl

From The Advocate, May 11, 2004

Suddenly it was decided: My eight closest friends in the universe—four lesbian couples with whom I’ve spent birthdays, baby namings, holidays, and, in the case of Torie Osborn, eight happy years a decade or so ago—were going to San Francisco to get married. And since California state legislators are empowered to perform marriages, they asked me to officiate. How very lesbian for an ex-partner to be officiating for Torie and her partner, Lydia Vaias, both of whom seemed quite happy with the idea. We would have been 10, plus me, but a few months before, Mary Newcombe had lost her sweet, brilliant, grounded partner, Jodi Curlee, so there was a bittersweet aura to the whole thing.

That wasn’t the only bittersweet touch: Over the years so many of us had so firmly banished marriage from our minds that we had come to believe it was not a necessary addition to our commitments. This, even though these four couples had been together a total of 70-plus years—with grown children from past marriages, adopted children, children they had given birth to in the relationship, and history history history. Until San Francisco, however, marriage just wasn’t in their plans.

All eight women are activists, and certainly the civil-disobedience aspect of our actions was delicious. Giving and taking public vows on the steps of City Hall seemed a good way to declare our continuing fight for equality. And when I told my friend and colleague, state assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, what we were planning, she and her partner of almost 30 years, Sharon Stricker, asked if I might marry them as well...

The highlight of the FReeping was of course "FLIPPER" (the dolphin);
This guy stood there in a dolphin suit for some two hours, and let me tell you, IT WAS VERY HOT, that poor guy...
There, but for the grace of God, would have been ME. :o)
Fortunately, someone ELSE volunteered for this "hazardous" duty.
Having a "guy in a dolphin suit" harass Kerry everywhere he goes is a WONDERFUL idea, though.
I strongly recommend we adopt this tradition - all across the USA.
From a previous thread:
Here is a SHORT EXCERPT from www.pittsburghlive.com:

FLIPPING OUT. Democrats once used a person in a chicken costume to stalk former President George Bush during the 1992 campaign. Now, Pennsylvania Republicans are using someone in a dolphin costume to go after presumptive Democrat presidential nominee John Kerry.

The Capitolwire.com Internet site reported last week that Flipper made his first appearance during a recent Kerry rally at the University of Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania GOP Committee Chairman Alan Novak promises Flipper will show up regularly at Kerry's Pennsylvania visits.

"John Kerry has flip-flopped his way through this campaign," Novak said. "He has a bad habit of saying one thing and then changing his opinion to appease one particular group or another. America needs a leader, not someone who lacks the conviction to take firm positions on the critical issues facing our nation."

-- snip --

And, HERE is a short excerpt from www.cbsnews.com:

One possible attendee at the Kerry speech is Flipper, a man dressed in a dolphin costume who accuses Kerry of being a "flip-flopper" on the issues. CBS News’ Steve Chaggaris notes that Flipper made an appearance during a Kerry event in Harrisburg, Pa., on Thursday. "Interestingly, Flipper, who first made an appearance in Palm Beach County on April 19, has his own press folks who sent out a release on his behalf Thursday. 'Flipper to Join Kerry at Harrisburg Visit,'" read the release adding, "(Pennsylvania) Republican State Committee Chairman Alan Novak warned residents of Central Pennsylvania to be on the lookout for a flip-flopping Presidential candidate from Massachusetts,'" Chaggaris reports.
-- snip --

Interestingly, Flipper, who first made an appearance in Palm Beach County on April 19...
See also, from www.palmbeachpost.com:
About 20 Bush supporters held signs in an area behind some barricades. Rob Flint, a junior at Palm Beach Atlantic University, rented a dolphin costume for about $75 and called himself "Flipper" to call attention to what he said were flip-flops by Kerry.

"It's about 150 degrees in here," said Flint, a South Carolina native and member of the College Republicans. "This is a good opportunity. It's not often that John Kerry is at your back door," Flint said.

After-freep report: John F. Kerry visits Wheeling, W.Va.
Wheeing News-Register and personal account ^ | April 26, 2004 | mountaineer
Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:37 PM PDT by mountaineer

Wheeling's afternoon paper reported:

Nearly 1,000 people from across the Ohio Valley turned out this morning at Wheeling Park's White Palace to listen to Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry as he kicked off his "Jobs First Bus Tour" of four key election states...

--snip --

Okay, that's one account. Here's mine:

I arrived at Wheeling Park's White Palace around 8:30 a.m. and stood near the main driveway with my signs. One had photos of waffles and said, "Where do you stand today, John?" The other said, "John Kerry said, 'Our Democracy is a Farce,' Nov. 2, 1971 at Bethany College. Maybe he should run for president of China - or France?" I also had an old pair of flipflops, which I smacked together for effect.

Shortly after I set up, fellow freeper sonsofliberty2000 showed up with a fine sign with a drawing of flipflops and a related message. We stood in the cool, damp weather for a while before deciding to to closer to the building. We received a few rude remarks and middle digits (Democrat IQ readings).

After a little while, a woman approached and asked whether we'd seen the kids from the local Catholic high school, as they were going to bring pro-life signs. We said we hadn't, but it wasn't long before about two dozen fine young people arrived.

Also joining us were some Bush campaign people, including one young man dressed as the dolphin Flipper (get it? Flip flop? Flipper?)
Some moms with small children also joined us a little later, and they made pro-life signs.

One of the guys had a bullhorn, and we regaled the assembled Dems (mostly union) with various chants. Kerry was at least 45 minutes late (emulating Bill Clinton), and we couldn't see him sneak in the back way. At our peak, we had about 40 on our side.

The event was supposed to last from 10:30 a.m. - noon, but it was well after noon before the attendees started leaving. Kerry was taking his time, even though he already was late for his next appearance in Washington, Pa.

Our GOP operatives told us that he's really getting upset at the protesters greeting him wherever he goes, so keep up the good work, freepers and others!

Anti-Kerry crowd pulls out all the props

Flipper the Dolphin was dragged into the political fray Monday as demonstrators waved inflatable dolphins and chanted anti-John Kerry slogans outside the Minneapolis Convention Center, where the Democrat was scheduled to speak.

About 50 supporters of President Bush had one thing to say: Kerry is a flipper -- he flip-flops.

"John Kerry stands on both sides of the issues," said Jake Grassel, state chairman for College Republicans, as he gripped one of several hockey sticks festooned with a dangling yellow flip-flop sandal. "Nobody really knows where he's going to stand..."

I checked out that link for "Hoy", but could only pick through the article about Kerry. Babblefish doesn't seem too reliable in the past, sooo...plus the Tribune publishes the LA Times. is La Opinion any better?

The reporter from Hoy did not include anything on the interview with our group but, only because of lack of space. On the other hand, she did not include anything Kerry said against Bush in his speech, either. Guess it could be better, but it could have been worse.

FYI, Hoy does belong to the Tribune family but the Editorial department is operated independently from the LA Times. So far, Hoy has a lot more news and opinion columns than La Opinion. They do publish at least a right-wing column, which makes it somewhat more balanced than other publications.

La Opinion is definitely veeeeery liberal and left wing liberal, so it will probably be a freezing day in Hell before they ever print something good about Bush, the GOP or any of us.

Good work, RonDog. Sounds like a good turnout for a workday (never a problem for the opposition, since none of them ever seem to have jobs...)
