The small-town girl who ended up on every channel (Lynndie England – Leash Girl)

Lynndie England loved a good storm. During tornado warnings her mother would have to drag her back inside the house. Her teachers say she wanted a career as a storm-chaser.

Now, the perfect storm has found her.

From hometown hero to the reviled woman holding the leash . . . US Reserve
soldier Lynndie England with an Iraqi prisoner in Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison.

The petite 21-year-old army reservist from the quiet crossroads town of Fort Ashby in West Virginia is the most visible character in the controversy over the abuse of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison. She is the thumbs-up girl, the pixie-ish, T-shirted soldier, smiling, pointing and posing for the camera with naked and humiliated inmates.

Soon after the release of the photographs, Terrie England was on the telephone with her daughter while watching television.

shame on all of you!  you don't know lynndie like I do and she's a kind and wonderful person and this type of thing is totally out of character for her.

Lynndie and i were close since i moved to fort ashby when i was in third grade.  loved by all who knew her, i first met her as she played alone in the corner of the playground burning ants with a magnifying glass, impaling japanese beetles on rose thorns, or digging into semi-healed wounds in her arms with broken glass.  She and i became fast friends and we'd while the summer afternoons away pulling the legs off grasshoppers or throwing rocks at racoons by the lake.

lynndie was always a natural leader, forming the Robert Byrd High School S & M club.  her natural magnitism was obvious as she strolled down the hallways in spiked hip boots, fishnet stockings, a PVC thong, bustier, and a choker collar, which was her standard garb.

lynndie joined the army in the hopes of raising enough money to open her own dominatrix business.  fort ashby is an economically depressed area and people here need to travel all the way to Charleston for a professionally delivered paddling or english canning.  In fact, the only rack in the entire county is privately owned and cat-o-nine-tails are only available by mail order.

When i saw the photos from iraq, i was absolutely stunned.  in fact, i'm sure the photos are either staged or she was doing this under direct orders from someone else.  a dog leash is so amature, she went beyond that type of stuff in the sixth grade.  now, an iraqi being suspended by his testicles with lynndie laying into him with a tawse and coating his nipples with hot candle wax, that I'd believe.

lyndie is a wonderful person and when the truth comes out, you'll all have egg on your faces for talking negatively about her.

Her unfortunate involvement with this scandal is the fault of Republican congressmen (who would probably pay her large fees in order to receive the treatment you describe as Lyndie's style) who vote to cut off funding to the NEA, or make it difficult for budding female entrepeneurs such as herself to get federal grant money to open businesses. If only she had the funding for her business dreams she would not have had to join the male-dominated, phalli-centric military and be part of George Bush's neo-conservative anti-female Zionist nation-building wag-the-dog vagina-fearing penile-size-enhancing machismo reactionary class-exploiting sexist bourgeoisie nouveau-riche xenophobic anti-intellectual anti-pro-choice exploits.

""I am indeed in charge of many and of much, although whether or not you acknowledge that fact is immaterial.""

My acknowledgment is not important, but that fact that you are not in charge of making any decisions that will affect the majority is.

""Wake up! We need to torture these people for about twenty years so THEY WILL FEAR US. They will never love us, much less respect us.""

Seriously, do you think that torturing people is the way to go. Would that tactic work on you? Do you seriously think that keeping people in fear is going make you safer. Did it work for Germany, Japan, Russia, Italy, eventually the tortured and oppressed will rise up and slaughter their torturers. If you were being tortured or knew a loved who was, wouldn't you do what ever you could to enact revenge, make them pay.

Your ability to see through firewalls and assess just whom it is with whom you are dealing is truly amazing!

No, seriously, I do not advocate torture. Obviously, it would lower us to the level of the enemy we are fighting, wouldn't it? If that is your point, then I can agree with you in earnest.

In fact, I think we probably both abhor not only torture of, but also killing of, innocents. The soldiers in Iraq who are guilty of atrocities will be punished, as they should be.

But forgive me a pang of conscience since I am sitting here in the states on my posterior doing nothing to help them. I want to make sure I don't rush to judgment in a situation that I have absolutely no way of comprehending.

The Islamic extremists do not seem to fear death, since they believe that they will be rewarded with paradise. Torture would probably not instill any more fear in them than death, and it would certainly help them to make more converts to their cause.

What do we do then?

""What do we do then?""

I know we are all scramble for a mysterious answer that no one has thought of yet.

Well if anyone person had the answer they would surely get the noble peace prize. There is no simple answer. It is important if humanity is to continue that the different races and cultures must come to terms with each other. We as Americans can’t blame everything on everybody else, we also can’t take the blame for it all either, that is were the Muslims and other cultures must do their part. I think it will take either a great person that has no axe to grind to make a difference, or we may have to endure a war with catastrophic results before mankind will see that this kind of none sense is futile. I don’t think their is a person alive that doesn’t know that the US can destroy another country, so trying to send a message that we are strong and tough is un-necessary. There is going to be horrible people in any culture, these guys that killed Mr. Berg are nothing more than brutal murderers that want murder someone and justify it with their religion. Not much different then the women, I believe she was from Texas, that brutally beat her kids to death with a rock and claimed she was told by God that it would save their souls.

The most influential people to the Muslim community are fellow Muslims. If we could get the level minded Muslim to influence their more radical minded ones we would be moving in the right direction. But the bigger question is how do we do that?

No one likes to say it but I will, someone has to start a dialogue of honest intent, we Americans have made some serious mistakes in the way we dealt with other countries. We get involved with good intentions but in some cases we just made the situations worst. We can’t change the past but we hope and will do as much as we can so that the future will not be the same.
