I vaugely recall a story like that. IIRC it was on a nearly airless moon, and the mean free path of molecules was quite long. The hero ended up casing ingots of their blood and spiking the area around his ship to have it swarmed to distract the hijackers long enough to regain control.

When sulfer burns it gives off a thick blue smoke. There is a definite haze around that crowd of bums, ergo I think I have discovered alien life.
