Sad, for sure, but I'm sure he'd have a heck of a sarcastic line about it!
Al, thanks for the chuckles. RIP, my friend.

I saw him at a theater-in-the round in Baltimore about 30 years ago. His chauffeur driven Silver Cloud Rolls Royce was parked next to the theater. He had come down from New York for the show.
I realized then how successful materially these major comics can be.
He was very funny that evening

Sharp as a tack, but alway's seemed bitter about something to me. A comedian who seemed to me as though he was completely unapproachable. How that managed to work in comedy I'll never know?
But then again, how Emo Phillips and Judy Tennudeau(sp?) got to work as comedians I'll never figure out either.

I remember some show from England years ago and the topic was English vs. American comedy. The English had a bunch of young comedians and they were very funny. On the American side was Alan King and I was thinking this is going to be walkover for the Brits but Alan started with a joke that simply disarmed the audience and the Brit comedians and he was equal to any that night.

This is shocking news. Mr. King is sorely missed. I read his second book, "Help, I'm a Prisoner in a Chinese Bakery!" years ago. A true-blue _mensch_ in every way. A great American. L-rd, welcome him!

a lot of comics have something in their background or character, sadness, bitterness, abuse or whatever. Some say that's what makes them able to do what they do.

King was one of my favorite comedians, sharp as a tack.
His favorite routine of mine was built around the fact that women outlived men.
He would actually grab the local obituaries wherever he was playing, and read them out loud to prove his point.
He carried one in his pocket from an old newspaper for a man who had been wounded and captured in two wars, his plane shot down by the enemy in one instance, and died in his late nineties, the obituary went on to say that this gentleman had been "survived by his wife".
I just picked this up from Google News:
"King, who was born Irwin Allan Kniberg on Dec. 26, 1927, also had roles in 29 films. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Jeannette..."
It's just like Alan King to play for that last laugh.

He was a good friend of Bobby Kennedy. He didn't seem to wear his politics as most current, um, "comics" do (think woopie, garafalo, franken, etc...)
I found him humorous, and sometimes needlesly abrasive, but he was part of our culture and will be missed.
RIP, Alan King. Say hi to the rest of the gang.

With all due respect....Alan King was the Abbot of the Friar's Club.
That organization has been extant for over a hundred years.
The first Friar's "Roast", I believe, was given to Irving Berlin.
The last one I saw on TV was a "Roast" of Chevy Chase.
It was the most profane piece of garbage I have ever seen.
Jay Leno's Band leader, Somebody Schaeffer, did not utter one sentence without some absolutely foul language.
Irving Berlin and the rest of the world's great deceased entertainers must have been rolling (not in the aisles) but in their graves.
Alan King should have apologized to the world for that episode.

is the one about "Chinese Jews". Have you heard it? Tell it!
See, these two Jewish fellas go into a Chinese restaurant. They've ordered, and, as they wait for their food, they are talking about the fact that, since the Diaspora, there are Jews just about everywhere.
"There are Jews in England, Jews in Italy, Jews in America..."
"Yes, and there are French Jews, Dutch Jews, Russian Jews..."
"Hey, you know, I'm not sure if I've ever heard of any Chinese Jews; do you know of any?"
"No, I can't say... Hey! Let's ask the waiter! Oh, waiter!"
So, the waiter, a Chinese fellow who speaks very little English, comes over...
"Yes, may I help you?"
One Jew says to the waiter: "My friend and I were conversing, and we wondered if you could tell us if there are any Chinese Jews?"
The waiter thinks a bit, then says, "Just a rittle bit, I ask my boss..."
Waiter comes back in about a minute and announces: "So solly; we got orange juice, tomato juice, ...no Chinese juice!"
