Drudge should stick to breathless gossip about upcoming summer movies and articles about homosexuals.
They're his fortes.

If this had a shred of truth to it, Bush would not have made his stand at the Pentagon. Not necessarily so. The President may want him to stay, but Rummy himself said that if he felt that he couldn't be effective, he would resign. The President's strong endorsement ironically could make him more likely to quit. He would then be doing it of his own free will, without the perception of the White House pushing him out.
On the other hand, it could be careerists at the State Department leaking this to the Times. They hate Rummy.
This man has given almost his entire life in the service to his country and to all of us. To be let go or resign now would be the ultimate travesty of justice. Our outcry must be louder than the NY Times or any of the other liberal media jerks.

Youre tight
What this most likely is is an attempt by the NYT to cause afracture within the Administration and cause Bush support to fall by confusing the voters. Also it is likey a tactic to get more voters to support Rumsfeld's resignation. If voters think there is growing support from his own administartion, then their support for Rumsfleld will decline
To: DLfromthedesert
in fact, you are exactly right. If Bush "accepts" Rumsfeld's resignation, he should withdraw from the presidential race. Give us a chance to elect someone else - Rudy Giuliani would clean Kerry's clock, and he won't give up in the war on terror, he'll fight it.
To: Judith Anne
Don't believe this for a bit. NYT. Enough said. Their credability is shot. Drudge is just doing his job grabbing any snippit.

It is Rumfield's obligation to offer to resign. Cabinet officers serve at the pleasure of the president and have no business trying to hold their jobs longer than the president wants them. But it's extremely unlikely that Bush would be such a fool as to accept a resignation. It would seriously undermine the War on Terror, and it would be unbelievably politically stupid. It would probably cost him the next election if he did anything that stupid.
Plus, Bush values loyalty and competence. The GOP may have weak spines, but there aren't many signs that Bush does. He is polite; he tries to deal with his political foes; but he doesn't wimp out.

like Powell, who also wants to go, these men both understand politics. He can hang around for 175 days until the election, just like Powell is doing.
To: oceanview
If Rumsfeld resigns, why shouldn't Bush? After all, he is the CinC, and the same stupid logic which would have caused him to accept Rummy's resignation should make him tender his own.
If this happens, we might as well ask Kerry to be the caretaker President until the election.

If Bush asks Rummy to resign, he will not have my vote. Don't even bother to reprimand me, please.

Resign for what reason? Our soldiers are cleaning up on the Iraqi insurgents. Gen. taguba says the responsibility doesn't go that high. Over some war time pictures? Bush had better take a deep breath and come out swinging, because the compassionate conservative rap is NOT going to cut it in the middle of a war.

Actually, you make a good point there.
The time window for the media is closing here, they sense this Berg thing has wrecked their plan to use the prison scandal to destroy the military, Rumsfeld, and Bush. They also know the truth of what is going on in Iraq - if Sadr's militia is neutralized, if there is no Shia uprising, if Fallujah doesn't erupt, if some of these Iraqi defense forces come on line - the 6/30 handoff will be looking good. The NYT and the rest of the media can't have that. They have to make one last desperate attempt to try and take it all down - this may be it.
To: Williams
Don't do it, Rummy.
Bush knows that Rummy will put the letter on his desk if either one of them thinks Rummy is a liability.
The POTUS knows the consequences.

Drudge and the NYT are wrong.
