HP to stop buying Air America spots

Posted on 05/13/2004 5:56:35 PM PDT by TheLurker

A response to a letter sent to HP investor relations:

I apologize to your offense to the radio commercial airing on an Air America affiliate. It is not the view of HP to use mediums like TV or radio to support or disagree with any type of political agendas, and the overriding consideration in buying media is to reflect HP as a responsible and global corporate citizen of good standing. When purchasing media for use in communicating HP messages, we generally look for where are core target is and where we will garner the highest response rates. We do not sponsor any Air America media vehicles, rather we were running spot radio commerials on affiliates of the network. All radio ads have been pulled from this network and we will not be running commercials with them in the future. HP is mindful in avoiding editorial content that could be seen as sensationalized or strongly biased.

I appreciate your input and will continue to monitor our media purchasing procedures in the future. Thank you.

Robert Chisholm IPGA Advertising Manager

This is good to hear. I sent them a rather stern, but polite, business email stating my disappointment with their ads on Err America.

So the stations not only lose the ad $$$ during "Error America" time slots, but other ones as well.

Randi Rhodes is a closer, a Jonah, a jinx. This "AA Meeting of The Air" is about to end quicker than a guy's enthusiasm when he sees her naked.

I work in radio, and I should point out that people who get upset at the advertiser should inform the company before they organize a boycott. These companies do huge buys of ad time, often with second party brokers, and they are far removed from the final ad placement decision on any individual station. Remember, too, that Air America claims to have all these affiliates, but they don't tell you that most of them are airing only a tiny portion of the programming. So someone like HP may have an ad buy at station WXXX and have no knowledge or control over whether it airs during Farm Report or during the two hours of Al Franken's show the station actually airs. If so, they'd demand to run during Farm Report and reach a much bigger audience.

Bwaaahhhaaaa! Yeah, right. It couldn't be because AirHead America is SINKING faster than a lead weight in water, could it? Hey Carli? What makes you think you have the right to ship your HP garbage back into the USA scott free?

This should be a concern to all GM and HP stockholders ( plus major companies like them ), and not just regarding Air America. It looks like they are shotgunning their advertising dollars, with no concern as to how many customers they reach. I know what you're saying, but it looks like those companies are just throwing money away in these cases.

Getting back to Air America, it seems like whatever broker was asleep at the switch or pulled a fast one on GM and HP. In general terms, I don't think the customer's intent was to have their ads on shows with almost no listeners.

Think the death threats they aired against the President of the United States had anything to do with it?

GM never intended to advertise with with them. They discovered the programming and asked that they be pulled.

They didn't pull them until after the outrageous rant about killing the President. To say they 'never intended' is to say GM's advertising department is completely incompetent by allowing ads to run.

So, I'm not buying that. GM let the ads run for several weeks. Why? They aren't stupid. If Airhead Radio turned successful, they wanted their ads there. They just didn't realize that Airhaead Radio was going to turn out to be Air-Rant-and-Thread Radio.

I applaude them for pulling their ads, but don't give me that line that they 'never intended' to advertise on Air Radio.

Looks like they're outsourcing their response to complaints. This must be a joke.

My thoughts as well. The English is pathetic...or Indian.
