10:56 PM CDT on Friday, May 14, 2004
Voters across Dallas County and North Texas go to the polls today to cast ballots for bond packages and in municipal and school board elections.
In the only countywide election, the Dallas County Community College District is asking voters to approve $450 million in bonds that would be used on each of the seven campuses and to help build five satellite centers.Polling Places
The bond proposal is the first for the district in nearly 32 years. Since then, enrollment in the district has grown from nearly 20,000 to about 62,000.
Only 1.7 percent of the 1.18 million registered voters in Dallas County cast early ballots for today's election, said Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet.
"We're really right on target for a countywide election turnout," Mr. Sherbet said.
Irving and Lancaster led the early voting totals countywide
Irving City Secretary Janice Carroll said 3,417 early ballots were cast.
In Lancaster, 2,059 ballots were cast. Voters there are facing two liquor referendums and a spicy mayor's race.
Turnout also was brisk in Rowlett, where voters will decide whether to allow beer and wine sales and liquor by the drink.Wet-dry elections also are being held in Allen, Burleson, Celina, Fairview, Haltom City, McKinney, North Richland Hills, Pantego, Prosper and White Settlement.
"Wet-dry elections always raise the turnout," Mr. Sherbet said.
Voters will decide mayoral elections in Denton, Duncanville, Flower Mound, Glenn Heights, Grand Prairie, Highland Village, Lancaster, North Richland Hills, Plano, Rowlett and Wilmer.
Denton County voters will decide on a $207 million package for roads, buildings and election equipment.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday that it would monitor the elections in Dallas and Harris counties to ensure the rights of language-minority residents. Monitors will gather data on the quality and availability of materials and treatment of those voters at the polls.
