BAGHDAD, May 17 (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded on Monday near a U.S. base in western Baghdad and there were several casualties, witnesses at the scene said.
Cars were on fire and a large column of thick black smoke rose into the sky. U.S. troops blocked off the area.
A U.S. military spokesman said he had no immediate information about the blast, which echoed across central Baghdad.
let decent Iraqis flee Iraq ... leave the rest ... bring back Saddam and put him in place ... apparently, there were too many that were loyal to Saddam to enjoy freedom ...
sorry for the rant, I'm fed up with these kind ...
Maariv reporting now:
A car bomb blew up near a US military base in western Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. First reports say that there are casualties. Reports say cars went up in flames, and smoke is present rising in the area.
I am just about fed up with this crap. Is this another muslim Taek Wan Do Instructor from Great Britain?
Why don't the decent Irai's go after these scum? If the terrorists are such a small percentage, as the media keeps telling us, then why don't these people do their OWN fighting??
I'm fed up too.
And some rental trucks.
I'm fed up three! Make that four.
A little off topic, but what I want to know is, WHY DON'T WE TAKE SADR OUT? He's not in hiding, what IS the hold up? Take him out and crush his little "militia".
We've really got to kill more of these people. Forget putting ladies underwear on their heads, just kill them.
decent Iraqis are as much hostages to these criminals as Americans were in the World Trade Center ... though, there must be some who know or suspect who these groups are ... they're amond the civilian population and that makes it tough ...
I sure hope there are much more decents Iraqis than this terrorists who are just like the PLO ...
"Forget putting ladies underwear on their heads, just kill them."
I vote that for great line of the day!!! I'm ROTF!!
You mean you aren't "OUTRAGED" at the HUMILIATION of a handfull of terrorists??? Sheesh, what's wrong with you???? :)
I don't know ... we should have let Saddam have Saudi Arabia and let them duke it out ... terrible I know, but I don't know how to deal with savages ... without us resorting to the last option ... which I fear is coming ... there simply is no dialogue, no reasoning possible with them ...
You can't dialogue with people that don't have respect for their OWN lives, let alone anyone else's.
JUST LIKE WE NUKED JAPAN (TWICE), WE NEED TO NUKE ATLEAST ONE CITY IN IRAQ.
bingo ... that's why I don't think we're going to see a good ending to any of this .... this isn't like World War II ... maybe time will prove me wrong ... but I wonder ...
gotta hit the sack ... g'night ... and stay safe ...
I can't belief this BUSH and Co have gone PC in this war

"Forget putting ladies underwear on their heads, just kill them."
My son was roughhousing with my daughter and had a plastic sword up against her neck like he was going to cut it off. It perturbed me more than usual, and I told him "to knock it off. The terrorists just did that to one of our guys in Iraq, and I don't want you goofing around like that."
I told him "we're not like that. If we see a terrorist we just shoot them."
(Mom gave me a funny look!)

U.S. troops at the scene said at least eight people were killed in the blast.
Al-Bayati said Abdul Zahra Othman Mohammad, also known as Izzedin Salim, had been waiting to enter the main U.S.-led coalition compound in Baghdad when the car bomb exploded.
The bomb destroyed three cars that were in a line waiting to enter the coalition headquarters, which is called the Green Zone, U.S. Colonel Mike Murray said.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The head of Iraqi Governing Council was killed today in a car bombing near a U.S. checkpoint in central Baghdad, an Iraqi official said.
Abdel-Zahraa Othman, also known as Izzadine Saleem, was among four Iraqis killed in the blast, according to Redha Jawad Taki, a member of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, a Shiite Muslim organization.
Saleem, the name he went by most frequently, was a Shiite and leader of the Islamic Dawa Movement in the southern city of Basra. He was a writer, philosopher and political activist, who served as editor of several newspapers and magazines.
The bomb destroyed three cars waiting in line to enter the coalition headquarters, which is called the Green Zone, Col. Mike Murray said.
Smoke rose from the site of the blast on the west side of the Tigris River. Firefighters and about 10 ambulances raced to the scene.
A rocket struck the compound of the coalition headquarters on Saturday, wounding one U.S. soldier and one civilian.
He was the first member of the U.S. appointing Governing Council to be assassinated since the group was established last July.
Aquila al-Hashimi, one of three women on the 25-member body, was mortally wounded Sept. 20 when gunmen in a pickup truck ambushed her car as she drove near her Baghdad home. She died five days later.
Arutz Sheva quotes agencies which report 2 Americans killed in the terror incident.

In South Korea, meanwhile, a foreign ministry official said Monday the United States is planning to shift some of its troops from South Korea to Iraq.
"The United States has informed us that it needs to take some of the U.S. troops in South Korea and send them to Iraq because of the worsening situation there," said Kim Sook. "Both sides are working out the details.
"Such details as the size of the deployment have not yet been fixed," Kim said.
Some Korean broadcast reports said about 4,000 troops would be deployed to Iraq from U.S. forces stationed in South Korea.
The United States has roughly 37,000 troops in South Korea, helping protect a 151-mile (248 kilometer) Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that has separated North Korea from South Korea since the end of the Korean War.
About 2 million troops are poised along the border.
North Korea is thought to maintain about 1 million troops along its side of the frontier.
On the southern side, stationed alongside the U.S. troops are some 600,000 South Korean soldiers.
May 17 (Bloomberg) -- The current head of the interim governing council in Iraq was killed in a car bomb attack in Baghdad, Al Jazeera reported, citing a council member.
Izzedine Salim, the holder of the council's rotating presidency, was killed in the attack on his four-car convoy near a U.S. base west of Baghdad, said Mohammed Othman, a governing council member, the Qatar-based station reported.
The station showed footage of a car on fire with billowing smoke as U.S. helicopters roamed above and sirens wailed. U.S. troops cordoned off the area in the center of Baghdad, the station said. There was an explosion at a checkpoint near the so- called green zone, where the U.S. has its headquarters in Baghdad, said an American military spokeswoman who declined to be further identified. She gave no more details.
The U.S.-Led Coalition in Iraq is planning to hand over power to the U.S.-chosen council on June 30 that will pave the way to the creation of an interim government.
The Iraqis get to put Saddam on trial? And what if we get another OJ trial? Letting the perp walk?
It will be "the trial of the century". I hope it isn't the mistrial of the century.
A number of G8 nations would have rather kept their business dealings with Iraq (including military) instead of going to war against that dictator who mocked the UN and its resolutions for a decade.
There were no terrorists in Iraq? Well someone on the opposing side sure seems to have found a good contact to them.
As someone else said, this hit was planned. They've probably been planning to take him out for sometime (no idea of how many unsuccessful attempts were made or plots foiled). No lone nut here.
The bad guys only have to be right once to do a lot of damage. The good guys have to be right everytime. Also the bad guys can take out innocent civilians (by mistake or to make sure they hit the target) and the press never puts the blame on them (or charges them with war crimes).
And yet people keep asking how much longer we have to be in Iraq.
TIME TO NUKE SUNNI TRIANGLE ! NOW>
IT WORKed in JAPAN.
And because it won't change a thing.
My tentative guess is that this was not the work of Sunnis, but rather Shiites. The guy who was assassinated was the head of a key Shiite group and this looks like an internal power struggle type of thing. I would bet that Al Sadr or someone like him is more likely responsible.
Or foreign terrorists. That's also a distinct possibility.
foreign terrorists - but your other point on Sadr may well be part of it, considering he answers to Iran.
Hey, the road to stability and democracy, given Iraq's history, isn't going to be smooth. I wonder what the security situation was to allow this to happen - was their no protection for this fellow?
You make a great point. Either the bad guys got extremely lucky or someone in the provisional authority is leaking information to them. The timing just seems too precise for a random carbombing.
