Cherokee Nation Concerned By Gay Couple's Marriage Application
AP ^

TALEQUAH, Okla. -- Cherokee Nation officials are scrambling to clarify their marriage laws after a lesbian couple obtained an application for marriage.

Principal Chief Chad Smith says officials are looking into defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

This comes after a lesbian couple from Tulsa obtained an application for marriage from the tribal clerk's office.

The application is not valid until the person who performs the ceremony signs it and the couple return it to the tribal court.

Cherokee officials are trying to figure out if the same-sex marriage is sanctioned because the women received an application, or if they can throw it out if the women bring it back after the ceremony.

Oklahoma does not recognize same-sex marriages.

Homosexual Agenda Ping.... It'll be fast and furious, I will not ping y'all to everything, but whatever I deem important, and if any of you see something I should know about, pingify me!

I hope the Cherokees do the right thing. Most people I have known with much Cherokee blood have been very moral people.

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this (soon to be *very* busy pinglist!

This could be interesting. I wonder who the libs will side with - the poor oppressed Lesbians, or the poor oppressed Indians?

Probably the Lesbians, Racists that the Libs are.

For some strange reason, I've met more racist lesbians than gay men. Very very rare do I ever encounter or hear about racist gay men. My sister worked with a racist lesbian in a research project and would make the most nastiest comments about hair, etc. Unpleasant. I rather live in a roundhouse on the Navajo reservation than hang out with snooty Hampton lesbos.

Oh heck yeah. We indians are cooler than effete, snobby liberals any day.

And we look better in loin clothes, too...

When I attended college for the first time, I went to everyone's club meeting. The only clubs I ended up staying in was the Navajo Club and College Republicans. It was way cooler to go hiking in the canyon and go to sweat lodges than sit around listening to people bitch about white people. Borrrrring.

LOL... yeah. Although, in SOME college indian clubs, they don't do much hiking and spend all their time bitching about white people, so...

For some reason, well I think know why, the Sioux people I've met talk way more. It probably depends upon how much they fought with white people *LOL* I don't mind reasonable discourse about history but too much can be depressing. I attended school during the 500th celebration of Columbus and well between the black students and indian students it was real interesting.

One thing that has always irked me is the belief that all Indians are the same. For example, the idea that all indians are liberals (groups like AIM and stuff are certainly no help in that regard)... I wont' even go into the other stereotypes ;0)

I've visited a lot of rez's over the years and a majority of the people I have spoken with have said pretty much the same thing - they just want to be left alone to live their lives. A few have said they wanted more "assistance" from the government, but the majority had a big distrust of the government.

I would love to see more American Indian outreach by the republicans - I think ti would pay off, and really eat into the left's voter fraud ;0)

Lots of Cherokee look, sound, and are named indistinguishably from Anglos. I'm Iriquois, and unless I told you, you'd never tell or even guess. We assimilated, but respect our roots as well. . .

LOL grief i am at work and startled everyone with my laugh at that one.
So obvious and simple a phrase but for some unknown reason quite humurous

Conservatives should definately take an interest in Indian people since they share a distrust of big government. That's the thing I remember, is the lack of faith in government. If anyone is still interested in AIM, it's because they want to get peyote :D

Sounds like a great Cherokee warrior.

Chad was preceded by the great Chieftess Wilma Mankiller. Contemplate that name!

One of the slightly earlier Principal Chiefs of the Cherokees was Bill Keeler, who also was Chief Executive Officer of Phillips Petroleum Company.
