Elementary school students witness gay marriages

Northampton, Massachusetts-AP -- A different sort of educational experience for a group of fourth- through sixth-graders in Northampton, Massachusetts.

The students from the Solomon Schechter Day School went to Town Hall today to witness the first day of legal gay and lesbian marriages in Massachusetts.

The students have been studying the civil rights movement. One of their teachers said today's proceedings offered a chance to see a bit of history in the making.

Among those applying for their marriage licenses were several sets of parents from the school.

The kids cheered as couples emerged from City Hall with their documents in hand.

But no predisposition or desire, no matter how strong, is beyond the most powerful and most meaningful force in the universe: human free will. We are not mere animals, responding to whatever urges overtake us. We are choosers.

A concise and perfect explanation of the issue. I think some people are born with a pre-disposition toward this depravity. And some are born predisposed toward other aberrant behaviors. The key element that is now being abandoned in our society is the notion that we're not allowed to act on every primal urge that may occur within us. Most heterosexual men have a primal urge IMO not to be monogamous. Strong men overcome it in order to do what is right.

Where are the parents of these kids? They should be suing the daylights out of the school board for thrusting the secular humanism religion down the poor kids throats. Makes me want to hurl!!

I'm on the ballot for my school district (election is today)and if elected, I would absolutely object to this type of field trip without parents having a say. It is clearly a value judgement for the parents to make - not the school district.

I call it child abuse.

It is a form of child abuse and brainwashing. There was a time when children would have been taken away from parents who left heterosexual relationships and dragged them into homosexual ones. You can do almost anything to your kids' minds you want so long as you don't hit them or sexually abuse them and keep them properly fed, clothed, and indoctrinated.

There was a time when teachers would have been fired for laying this stuff on innocent kids.

In my seven years at elementary school, I never heard anything about homosexuality other than what I read in the bible which I assumed only ancient people indulged in and were punished severely for it. I didn't know what it meant anyway. I didn't know what the word "fornication" meant either. Or adultery or those other words because most people weren't doing it. I can't remember anyone in my sphere in those years who was doing any of those its. Societal norms kept things in check back then, I guess.

YIKES! I have a gay nephew whom I love dearly. He lives with another man. If they got married I would not want to even go to THEIR wedding.

I have this awful fear that my sister and her partner will decide to come to Mass. to get married, forcing me and my husband to decide between family harmony and deeply held beliefs. Actually, my husband has already said he wouldn't go, and I think I wouldn't either, even though it would do damage to my already not so close relationship with my sister. I suffered through their pretend marriage ceremony last year, but I just don't think I could show support for something I am so opposed to if they came here.

Does that make me a bad sister?

Now, now, don't put ANYONE automatically in the same backside as the Massholes, just because we're in the north:) Think of Mass as an island of nitwits.

To be fair, I live in Massachusetts and once you get outside of the major urban areas, it's a pretty traditional New England place. In my little town there were NO lines at the town clerk's office. I completely hate what is going on here, but I would like to point out that there are sane people here in Mass. too. We just have no power over the *&$%$%*# SJC.

What would Coolidge say? Wasn't he once the mayor of Northampton? "Well, Grace, I do think the people have finally lost their morality, what there was of it!"

I suffered through their pretend marriage ceremony last year

Well, the deed has already been done. The "pretend" marriage that would become legal in hogwash MA would still be a "pretend" marriage in the eyes of God. The participants would be mocking God in fact. Your attendance would connote your "support."

Anal sex will have to be dealt with on an equal footing with normal heterosexual sex...

...Just be sure to use a quality lubricant, or you could hurt your 'special friend' Michael. And remember to take your time; it only hurts at first...

There are many people who will scoff at your commentary, however it's documented in actual homosexual publications on recommended reading lists for middle and high school aged kids:

An excerpt from "GLSEN Encourages Teens In Anal SEX "Don't give up.""

"The following quotes are from three Alyson publications recomended to teens by GLSEN: Young, Gay and Proud!, One Teenager in Ten, and Two Teenagers in Twenty...

These books are in middle and high schools around the nation. Adults, real adults, have a responsibility to inform themselves about whats going on in public schools we fund. It is criminal to allow these people to educate our children on matters of sexuality! The children are depending on us to protect them. Please pass this information on to parents and other concerned adults.

Advice offered to teenagers in Young, Gay and Proud!

The page numbers will differ depending on what edition you have.

"Doing it: Gay men...Many people don't know the anus is not only an organ to remove waste. It's very sexually exciteable...Your first few times having anal sex might be a little hard. You may have to practice a bit before it starts feeling really good. I sure did." (pg. 81)

...If this presents a realistic look into the life of a child struggling with same sex desires then these children are seduced/molested at an alarmingly high rate and engage in dangerous/abusive sexual activity at a very young age. What's worse is that the adults who purport to care most about them (the editor of this book for example) present this sexual abuse as if they were tender "coming of age" stories. As if the children struggling with same sex desires are showing how healthy they are by engaging in sex with adults and by having sexual encounters regularly beginning at a very young age.

And, the message is clear, if "straight" kids don't want to be closed-minded, if they want to be "open" and "free" they'll mimic the homosexual sexual behavior and promiscuity related in these books.

In several stories intense sexual activity as a child is presented as normal and healthy, even child/adult sex is presented without question. Five and six year old's who regularly engaged in sex are described as children "who were willing" to explore their sexuality "to it's fullest extent." Many stories fondly recount a youthful sexual encounter with a much older man or woman. Sexual promiscuity and engaging in sex as a child/teenager is presented as "sexual freedom".

Heterosexual or "questioning" youth are encouraged to try same sex intercourse because, the Kinseyin theory is repeated over and over, "Everyone's really gay or bisexual." and "You won't know if you like it until you try it."..."

I agree - for someone who just wants to be left alone, doesn't throw their beliefs or lifestyle in my face, and keeps relatively private, I'll never have a problem with them. That goes for homosexuals as well as heterosexuals and those really preachy folks who like to meddle in other peoples' lives. I'm pretty much a "you live your life - I'll live mine" kind of person.

That being said, bringing kids, especially kids this young, to this sort of thing is totally wrong, in my opinion. At their age, these kids are completely incapable of making an informed opinion as to whether what's happening is right or wrong. I'm not saying the teacher should be arguing for, or against what's happening; just that the question or topic should not be brought up, or should at least be sidestepped pending the mental development of these kids.

That's why I don't think I could go. Their ceremony last year was NO fun to be at, especially at the point where they made a point of saying how much more they had to think about the committment they were making because of all the legal issues that are automatically dealt with for a legal marriage. I think my husband almost walked out of the room at that point. I felt like a hypocrite there - if they were to come here to "make it legal" I just don't think I could be a part of it. It would probably destroy my relationship with her, but it would be better for me not to be a part of it at all than to go and effectively support something I am so opposed to. Hell, even if they don't come here the odds seem increasingly good that this plague will spread quickly via judicial fiat.

Doesn't Mass. have parental consent for sex education? Homosexuality is only about the private sex act. By forcing these minors to witness homosexual marriages these teachers were conducting sex education, an item which requires parental consent.

These parents should sue in order to prevent this from happening again.

Homosexual sex is not about civil rights. It is only about special rights for the practitioners of a particular sexual fetish.

"Does that make me a bad sister?"

Absolutely not. Personally, I think the best thing for you to do in such a situation is to let your sister know that no matter what, she'll always be your sister and you'll always love her. That being said, I think it's perfectly reasonable to let her know that her lifestyle - this marriage included - goes against your deeply held beliefs. Without trying to convince her that she's wrong, or that you're right, you can let her know that it's just not something you can bring yourself to attend. If she's looking for some sort of response to her wedding, the middle ground might be for you to let her know that you're happy that she's happy.

Where things get tricky are the 'family gatherings'. If you feel comfortable with her partner coming to your home for gatherings, then that's all well and good. If you're uncomfortable with that, then you're going to need to tell your sister about it so they don't just show up together, putting you and your husband in a very uncomfortable position. Something you might feel better doing would be going out to dinner, as opposed to bringing this other person into your home.

All in all, I think there's a balance to be had between your comfort level with her lifestyle and keeping her in your life. For what it's worth, I think you've already shown remarkable tolerance in the name of family. Just don't forget that your feelings, comfort, and happiness matter every bit as much as her's.
