I know--I was referring more to the mentality of parents who think that getting a dianosis (whether it is accurate or not) will get them some "magic pills" that will just take care of it. They are usually unaware that autism is a lifelong condition that requires lifelong treatment.

You know, there is something of a relief when you know something's off but you don't know quite what, and you finally get the diagnosis. I spend my days focusing on my SON, not a diagnosis, and he sees no therapists or doctors, but I am still secretly glad that it is something "out there" and nothing I did wrong that made him the way he is. So for me the diagnosis was a good thing, even as I choose not to focus on it or have him "be" the diagnosis.

I do hear you about people who will whip their kids in to get drugs, though. That happens so frequently in the ADHD type cases. It makes me very sad, even though of course there are parents who say that it's so wonderful. It still doesn't seem right.
