Posted on 05/20/2004 12:11:09 PM PDT by UnbelievingScumOnTheOtherSide
A soldier "Jeff, from Morehead OK" calling in to Rush Limbaugh explained that in Iraq wedding parties and funerals are full of people with guns who often fire on American troops that happen by. The self-identified soldier who spent 356 days in Iraq reported in response to a question from Rush that when he first went to Iraq the troops "took care of business" when fired upon. But by the time he left Iraq, soldiers literally had to take incoming mortar rounds without responding or actually have someone shot before returning fire. He said that every Iraqi is permitted to keep an AK-47 or pistol. And while most Iraqis accept U.S. presence, many are clearly hostile. The problem, according to him, is largely the media. There are cameras everywhere. And the Iraqis "know the media is in their pocket" and they can't respond in any way that might be recorded and sent CNN or Al-Jazeera. In his opinion the politician are impeding the troops and their fear of the media may lead to our defeat.
Being home for a month he did say, as most other returning troops have, that it is better than the media portrays. The news reports in Oklahoma are more frightening than being there. But he described in detail the difference in the intensity of dealing with Sunnis, Shiites and Wahabbis and that the difficulty of dealing with them was strictly related to the individual's and group's religious zeal with "Wahabbis being the worst." He said, "They hate us." solely "because we are not them", that is not Muslims. "I've never felt as hated anywhere before." "They need freedom of religion more than anything else" in order to reduce the threat they pose to the world.
Additionally, he said the Arab fighters are "cowards" in their tactics and that we could "win this war fairly quickly" if the military were allowed to get back to doing its job.
o The media is killing us - deliberately. o The politicians and field commanders are buckling to the pressure from the reported images. o The people in America are virtually clueless as to what we are fighting for or the threat they pose due to their hate. (FReepers and Dittoheads excepted) o The problem is the absolute intolerance of Islam.
I guess others can fill in additional impressions of this most important report from the front and suggest what we can do to lift the veil (here and there literally) and bring about victory.
Hopefully an mp3 of this call will be made available.
I heard it too.
We don't fully appreciate, yet, what we're up against.
One only hopes that Bush keeps (regains?) his backbone and sees it through.
Rush is scooping the lib-media.
Try speaking your mind on Free Republic.
The Grima Wormtongues of our time.
Breaking News thread on Rush's caller here:
MIchael Savage was saying Bush went from "Let's Roll" to "Let's Roll Over." I don't know. This is all above my pay grade. But it makes you wonder if we are doing the best we can or not.
But ive yet to see anyone get shot at here.
The left is determined to defeat the US like they did in Vietnam. I'm sure they hope to damage the US for decades.... Again.
"...We don't fully appreciate, yet, what we're up against..."
- - -
Who is "we"?
"He said that every Iraqi is permitted to keep an AK-47 or pistol."
There's the problem! Have a law that says 'Show Gun - Get Shot'. Problem soon resolved, one way or another.
Thank God for soldiers like Jeff who put their lives on the line for us.
I think we need a very long list of those who sponsor our left media sources who are giving aid and comfort to the enemy. We also need to turn them off and tune them out. If they have no audience....they may change their tune - but don't hold your breath!
As I've been saying for weeks, only clowns run a war with the hope they they do not offend the enemy.
This war is run by a bunch of incompetents who are infected with the disease of PC.
I'm not sure he meant that rules of engagement have changed DUE TO media interference IN THIS CASE.
Now, he was clear that on the street, the presence of al-=Jazeera and other cameras has had a negative effect.
Thanks for the summation. I was so busy today I couldn't even put my headphones on to tune in.
And yes, just about everyone over there carries a gun. If our troops shot at every single person they saw carrying an AK, they would have to kill 90% of the population.
Now, I agree that if you SHOW a weapon in public when an American is around, it's lights out. But I don't think we can or should disarm everyone any more than we should prohibit protest marches. We allowed protest marches in Japan, and 100,000 marched against us in May 1946 . . . to no effect.
I sure would like the Defense Department, under the order of The Commander in Chief, issue an edict stating that all foreign and domestic reporters, journalists, network representatives and all media assets are hearby requested to leave Iraq immediately within 48 hours. Anyone that does not comply will be detained and removed from the country.
I have not seen or heard one thing to cause me to waver as to whether we are doing as well as we can. My God, Bush has defeated three terrorist regimes in 3 yrs. (one without firing a shot in its direction) and people "wonder?"
I wonder what the hell they expect.
Sorry, but I find this extremely hard to believe.
EVERYONE HERE ON FR NEEDS TO FIGURE THIS OUT: we are in a new age, and for better or worse the media is a part of the equation. The "embeds" was a brilliant end-run around the media, and it can't be the only strategy. But censorship in the age of satellite phones and the internet is NO LONGER AN OPTION.
We need to look forward, not backward to WW II, to figure out NEW ways of circumventing the leftist press.
On FR, I have been referred to as "racist bigot", "tothless white trash", "wannabe troopie", "National Guard Imitation Soldier Boy", and other things I don't care to hear.
And those are just by the famous, sleep-at-JimRob's-feet paleo-FReepers.
Does that all sound like "bitchy, nit pick disagreements", to you?
I'm okay with that.
And which of those isn't true? (Just kidding!)
That is b.s. and the call probably is too. Anyone can claim to be anything on a radio call. I don't believe any of it sounds like Rush got snookered and the rabid here fall for it.
Been called Francis yet?
I heard it. It was a compelling call.
o The media is killing us - deliberately.
o The politicians and field commanders are buckling to the pressure from the reported images.
o The people in America are virtually clueless as to what we are fighting for or the threat they pose due to their hate.
The people are clueless because the media and the educators have never told them the truth. Anyone who has grown up in America in the past 50 years or so has been told: "Saladin good -- Crusaders bad." The media suppress the facts in the Middle East and the facts about Islam.
As for the second point, the Republican politicians are caving. The Democrat politicians have helped organize the media blackout and are working closely with the press to demonize Bush.
Apparently the only way to get the word out to people is for them to see for themselves. A few nuked cities maybe. I don't know what else will do it. And even that will be spun by the press as far as they can.
They are looking for everything they can to turn the American people against the war.
That's not exactly what he said...
Those are some of my better qualities....
Makes it almost sound like the Iraqi's take mortar's to wedding parties to celebrate.
I understand how you drew that inference. A bit clumsy on my part. But in my defense, I did not say "Rules of Engagement". In fact, I suspect the "official" rules haven't changed. But I drew the inferrence that there is pressure from the top to not respond unless absolutely necessary for fear of media playing up every dead body. Thus the "Rules" have changed in fact if not on paper.
"Soldiers in Iraq Cannot Respond to Incoming Mortar Fire
That's not exactly what he said..."
True. He had said that they've TAKEN incoming mortar fire and did nothing about it, due to having to think and re-think and triple-think, instead of just doing their job, doing what they are there for.
Well, THAT'S bs. Have a look at the new Iraqi Constitution.....
I believe that we can locate the location of the firing mortar using radar. There is no need to visually spot the piece.
The Saddam regime is gone, but we haven't won in Iraq yet, and things like this stupid prison "scandal" DEFINITELY make me wonder if Americans have the balls to win a war. I know our soldiers do. But that's not enough. I am amazed that anyone can't be troubled by the goings on of late. The lack of resolve.
More returning soldiers need to do this sort of thing.
He said officical rules have not changed, but since the "inbeds" (reporters), were gone, they have been replaced by a journalist on every corner who sticks a camera in your face whenever you make an arrest.
He feels that the media overthere make the soldiers self-aware of their actions, and how they will be betrayed on TV.
"most Iraqis were helping at first", they "need religious freedom", because the Islamic cults are putting pressure on the ordinary "pagen" citizens "who only go to Mosque once a week".
He said he was more afraid here when he watches the "news", than there.
Several of you have inferred what I did not imply:
You will notice that was not given as a direct quote. Another poster interpreted "Rules have changed" to mean the "Rules of Engagement have changed". The soldier didn't say that and I didn't draw that inferrence nor intend to pass on that implication. See post #35. I'm sure he meant informal rules and in that sense there is pressure that prevents them from returning fire that did not exist a year ago.
There was a report last week that the guards are Iraqi prisons were issued rubber bullets.
In one uprising, the guards were unable to put it down (with rubber bullets). Luckily, the next line of defense had 'real' bullets and managed to bring the uprising under control.
Also, hooding is now longer allowed either.
The war is won. What is now happening are mop-up actions, police actions and the building of a political structure.
RATmedia obsession with defeating Bush has greatly weakened the American peoples' understanding and resolve but it has NOT weakened that of the leadership nor most of the Republicans. It has shifted the weak-minded into an anti-war position.
Since I despise the RATmedia with the greatest of intensity I am not troubled by the goings on of late. That is EXACTLY what I would expect from this Evil force which hates all good and loves all evil.
Surely you have watched this long enough to know both its power and the susceptibility of the American sheeple to its schemes? Nor can you be surprised by the p@$$ified culture of America.
However, it is encouraging to see that the damage the RATmedia has done to Bush seems to be limited and not as great as it had hoped. Without places like FR providing actual information and perspective it would have been fatal.
You need to put your glasses back on since you are "seeing" things that are not there.
The soldier, Jeff, was absoultely authentic. Nothing fake about a single word he said. As for not returning fire on incoming mortars rounds, I've heard that mentioned from other sources. (The big concern is that by returning fire, there will be "collateral damage," which, of course, there would be.)
Best comment he made was how he felt this country was in deep, dark trouble judging from the content of the media circus surrounding Iraq. He literally said he could not bielieve how "stupid" people in this country could be!!!!
It was an awesome call, and I hope Rush puts out a transcript on his web site....
