A Pizza Hut deliveryman who police say fatally shot a man on the city's east side Monday night says he acted in self-defense.
Ronald Honeycutt, 38, of Carmel, says he had just delivered a pizza at the Oaks Apartments around 11 p.m. Monday when a man approached him with a gun.
Honeycutt (pictured, right), who was near his delivery van and had his own gun, fired 15 times at the man, later identified as Jerome Brown, 20, of Indianapolis. Brown was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"The only thing I can do is protect myself, and if that means shooting somebody that intends to shoot you, so be it," Honeycutt told RTV6's Jack Rinehart Tuesday. "I'm sick of the crime and I'm sick of being victimized."
Honeycutt said that after the shooting, he picked up Brown's handgun and drove to a Pizza Hut, where sheriff's deputies took him into custody. Police questioned Honeycutt and then released him.
Pizza Hut, which has a policy forbidding deliverymen to carry weapons, fired Honeycutt soon after the shooting, Rinehart reported.
The county coroner's office Tuesday determined Brown died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Honeycutt said he used all the ammunition he had because Brown kept standing.
"The guy literally stood there the whole time with his arm up," Honeycutt said. "The whole time, I'm popping off rounds ... (and) the guy's still standing there after 15 rounds went off in him."
Honeycutt, who has a valid license to carry a firearm, said he planned to buy another handgun and go back to work with a different pizza business.
The Marion County prosecutor's office will review the case to determine whether Honeycutt acted in self-defense, Rinehart reported.
"If he didn't get fired the company would have to allow all employees the ability to register for a carry permit."
The company has no say about any person registering for a carry permit.

The company should not have the ability to infringe on a constitutional right of the employee.
We need to stop allowing arbitrary institutions to usurp our rights. If the employer does not want you using force to protect their property or money, that is their choice.
When the employer believes that they can tell you not to defend yourself to protect your LIFE, that is a problem.
Now that's what I call a pizza man with an attitude. Whatever you make sure to tip him well or else...

Yep. Companies can already run credit reports on you. How difficult would it be for them to determine if you have a CCW 'permit' or not? And then how difficult would it be for them to simply announce a "policy" whereby if you wanted to work there, you had to surrender your permit?
Tyranny is still tyranny, independent of who the "boss man" is. A tyranny ran by multinational corporations (which control the gov't) is no different than a tyranny ran by the gov't (which controls the corporations).
And before you folks start spouting off about "Free enterprise", it simply doesn't exist in this country except perhaps on very small and localized levels.
The gov't and large corporations have become incestously intertwined where one does the bidding of the other, and vice versa. Neither has any loyalty to the Constitution, America, or their fellow citizens.
Roughly the same as either a Federal 9mm 135 or a Remington 147 9mm, both of which probably have a little more penetration than the .40. The forty is fine if you like it; I prefer a 9.
If I was deliverying still, I'd carry the Kel-Tec .32 I carry now. Wasting rounds, as you say, is often more a sign of bad shooting rather than underperformance of the chosen round. And we don't know which handgun, though I'm guessing by the 15 rounds fired, it was a Glock. Cheaper hi-caps available, and Sigs are probably too heavy for pizza carry.
Better yet, he should get some more range time, shot placement trumps caliber.
Sounds like, from reading just this article. But we weren't there in his shoes.

Be careful not to rush to judgement.
I am with you. No guns was a condition of his employment. He should be satisfied that he wasn't caught with the gun before and was able to use it when he needed it.

I'm a NRA member and I know hundreds more, I wouldn't call any of us trigger happy. We may be a bit fanatical about preserving our 2nd Ammendment rights, but I wouldn't put us on a par with the screaching harpys of NARAL, or the Million Moms for that matter.
And sensing you are a Dem troll, that's what should really scare you, there are millions of us out there every day, armed to the teeth and we look just like your Dad, your Brother, your Sister and your Mom.
We don't go through life dressed in Camo, we're generally not the ones with the bumper sticker that says, "Keep honking, I'm reloading".
Any time, any place, a theater, a park bench, in church, you could be sitting next to an armed American. (and FWIW, you will never be safer.)

Why would they ask that unless they had a reason to?
In self defense stopping power is more important than penetration. That is why I shoot the .40 with the 135 GR COR-BON bullet. The one shot stopping power is 96% + and the bullet will stay in the perps chest. I don't want the bullet exiting the perp hitting an innocent bystander.

If adrenaline is rushing, you will not notice the passage of time like you do in a calm state. You could empty the magazine before you knew it.
And why should any FREE man RUN from his attacker when he has the advantage? Why the F would you turn your back on such a person? Are you nuts?
YOu shoot to stop the confrontation, if the other dude ran away, fine. But if he stood there, you shoot until he's stopped(either down or running the other way.)

The only disagreement I have is that you should leave a few rounds for his buddy (in case he is not alone). That is what I was taught in my CFP class. But I wasn't there standing in front of someone pointing a gun at me so who am I to judge his actions?
You are absolutely correct. If PH hires and allows people to carry, they would have to train them in firearms, in most states procur an armed courier/guard/sherriffs special duty license and THEN, no insurance company would cover them for liability, worker's comp or probably casualty ins.

Every example I posted was widespread in "corporate America" until a few years ago. And it still goes on, although less blatant.
My point was simply that corporate "rights" don't trump over certain individual Rights, such as the Right to self defense.
I've seen similar sentiments posted on some of the gun forums.

What is not mentioned in the article is the coroners report that Brown was so high on meth or crack that he would not have reacted to the initial half dozen gunshot wounds.

She asked AFTER she had my ID in her possession. She didn't direct the question at my girlfriend at the time who was driving the car.
As far as exiting, the penatration figures don't mean exiting is automatic. I'm not saying the .40 is a bad load. Quite the contrary. But it isn't necessary as a well loaded nine will do the job just fine.
So, would you put .40SW "in between" 9mm and .45 ACP in terms of stopping power? That's my impression, also in terms of concealability.
Three shots with a 9 -- two to the chest, and one to the head, will stop just about anyone.
As far as all the statistics I could find on "One Shot Stopping Power", the .40 S&W COR-BON 135-GR is rated the highest (96% to 98%)with a .357 Mag Fed 125-GR JHP leading the way in revolvers. I'm not knocking the 9mm but a smaller grain bullet is recommended in self defense. My information shows a COR-BON 115-GR JHP+P with the best "One Shot Stopping Power" (91%).
I think we both agree that stitching up the seams (mid-section, 2 in the chest, and one in the head) will take care of business with either gun.

Sounds like "Good Thing" to me.
They are open to them anyway, from the survivors of deliverymen (and women!) killed because they were unarmed. It's already happened many times. If they would allow carry only by individuals licensed by the state they'd probably be able to shift any liability to the state. They'd then only have a problem in those few states who obey the federal and their own state's Constitutions and do not infringe upon the right to keep and bear arms.
Time to get a .45
In other words, they don't give a sh*t about the lives of their employees, and are more concerned about the bottom line.
I agree. There are other places to buy pizza and that's what we plan to do.
