Hunter S. Thompson's ESPN column was scrubbed of controversy late Monday afternoon when online editors worried the famed gonzo journalist had gone too far.
In a column entitled, "Let's Go to the Olympics," Thompson went off on the Abu Ghraib prison picture scandal, exclaiming: "Not even the foulest atrocities of Adolf Hitler ever shocked me so badly as these [Abu Ghraib] photographs did."
But after being linked to the DRUDGE REPORT, a top editor demanded the sentence be immediately edited --without Thompson's okay, according to an ESPN.com staffer.
"Hunter can go too far sometimes," the Bristol-based ESPN employee told the DRUDGE REPORT.
The cleansed paragraph now reads:
"These horrifying digital snapshots of the American dream in action on foreign soil are worse than anything even I could have expected. I have been in this business a long time and I have seen many staggering things, but this one is over the line.
As with the original, Thompson still concludes with the thought: "Now I am really ashamed to carry an American passport."
THEN LEAVE AND STAY OUT!
well, he's obviously on drugs ... what a dope
They can second guess their outrageous comments all they like... we still catalog and record them.
Then I woke up one day and realized he's just an a$$hole on drugs.
He has been frying his brain(what's left of it) by doing all that Adrenochrome..
Totally off subject, but can you tell me how to add a 'sig' to my posts?
Didn't ESPN fire Rush Limbaugh over a less inflamatory statement?
People who do that on a regular basis can be fairly said to be holocaust deniers.
Hunter probably has some anti-semitic friends in Europe he's laying down cover for. Or, maybe Hunter is an anti-semite. I've noticed a lot of his biggest fans are.
Hunter Thompson has done more drugs than any person on the face of the earth, living OR dead.

LOL. I think its funny all these freepers are taking him so seriously or anybody would publish Hunter's comments within the context of being newsworthy or sincere. At least the guy is an avid 2nd amendment supporter. Even if it does include a suitcase full of drugs and good honest hard working man's whiskey :-)
"Now I am really ashamed to carry an American passport."`
Good, were even because I'm ashamed you claim to be an American.
Stupid me was searching in 'My Profile'
Disney-ESPN saw fit to give him a column to spew his hate.
Thompson once predicted that Kobe Bryant case would be bigger than O.J. Simpson's. His judgement becomes more questionable by the day.
Legend has it that you will be shot approaching his home unless you have your hands up, and a bottle of Wild Turkey in each one!
Thanks John.. It's certainly lively 'round these pahts.
Anyone eho is surprised that HST became a shallow-thinking burnout did not read his stuff.
He was trying desperately to warn us, with his arrogant glorified tales of alcohol and drug binges, that he would become an addled fool in his later years.
And here he is, an addled fool. Drug burnout. He somehow could find NOTHING to criticize in 8 years of Clinton. He re-discovered his political voice only after Jan 2001, when the Clintons were out of the WH.
To give him the benefit of the doubt, perhaps Hillary has his FBI file on her laptop and he's simply frightened into silence on the Left's myriad sins. His credibility left with his brain cells.
If you read Hunter's columns, you will find that quite often he bets on the losing team. So who do you see in November 2004???
"When the going gets tough, the weird turn pro." BTW, who is Raoul Duke's son, and what was his infirmity?
He rarely talks to reporters. When he does...you are correct...they have to come bearing gifts or be shot at. Most of these folks don't realize he bashed Klintoon for 8 years. Now he was no friend of Nixon either but the guy is so warped he is interesting but I wouldn't take anything he said seriously. This is bat country you know!!!
Raoul Duke: You can turn your back on a person, but, never turn your back on a drug. Especially when it's waving a razor-sharp hunting knife in your eye.
I dunno. His story about Bill Clinton "hitching Stump" remains an all-time political classic.
It sounds like advice from his attorney..
I'm afraid you are mistaken. Thompson did plenty of Klintoon bashing. I'll try to find some links for you.
I knew this Ausie who used the words "Animal Perversion" once in a Sunday School class.
Perfect discription for "Hitching Stump"
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
Don't tell Ozzie that, he'll be crushed.
The drugs Ozzie and Keith Richard have done are literally chump change compared to Hunter; he's a professional.
I must of missed that one. Inquiring minds want to know.
That's a pretty strong statement, pal. Got a cite? ;-)
He was always on the s*** list.
"In a column entitled, "Let's Go to the Olympics," Thompson went off on the Abu Ghraib prison picture scandal, exclaiming: "Not even the foulest atrocities of Adolf Hitler ever shocked me so badly as these [Abu Ghraib] photographs did.""
That really is how the liberal mind works. The murder of countless innocents is nothing compared to anything that can be used against your opponent.
Hunter went too far when he survived the womb.
You must be young, right?
Even Keith Richards? There's a contest I wouldn't want to judge :)
Even Keith Richards.
Hmmm. I remember just one critique of Clinton, in 1992 in RS, but his political writing disappeared, at least from Rolling Stone, after that. I just guessed that someone on the high Left "got" to him. He wrote about thoroughbred racing or pollo or something.
I'd like to read his critiques of the Clinton cabal. Looking forward to it.
I read something he wrote about clinton during the '92 campaign. Mentioned a place called Plato's Retreat.
Oh, I've read HST's work, and have no doubt that he beats them on sheer variety. On volume of use, though...that's some pretty stiff competition.
He had an 11 year start on Ozzy.
This is similar to the policy around the Eaker Compound, Humble Manor and both Deer Camp North and South. The only difference is that you have to have a carton of smokes too.
