GLSEN Los Angeles

Cootie Shots Companion Guide - Lesson Plans www.glsenla.org

What’s With The Dress, Jack?

A boy and girl play dress-up and tell stories about how the Assiniboyn, a Native-American tribe, encourage their children to wear the clothes that suit them best and play the games they most enjoy, without the limits of stereotypical gender roles.

Before the Play (Activities and/or discussion questions)

The teacher should solicit/ chart “boy’s” activities, things, and dress and then “girl’s” activities, things and dress. The teacher can then discuss all the student responses. Possible questions might include the following: Do you think boys could like some things that are on the girl’s side and vice versa? What makes us think of certain clothing, activities and things as being only for girls or only for boys?

After the Play

Discussion Questions:

The teacher should have pictures and photos of atypical gender roles both From today and in history. Examples from today might include police, fire And military women or male nurses, fashion designers, and ballet Performers. Examples from history might include men in dresses, robes, Kilts or with wigs, earrings and long hair. Why were men able to wear dresses in the past and not today? Why do you think women were not allowed to wear pants? Why did this change? Discuss hairstyles, make-up and jewelry and how it fits into gender roles. Is it all right for women to be in the military, police, etc.? Why or why not? Would it be alright if a boy wanted to play jumprope or hopscotch or if a girl wanted to play soccer and kickball? Why or why not?

Extension Activity

First chart “boy” and “girl” P.E. activities. For P.E. have the girls teach the boys how to play one “girl game” and the boy to teach the girls how to play one “boy game.” Then let them play the game for the day or week. After they have played the new game for the week, ask students if their views have changed.

Other Related Activities

Language Arts

Language Arts:

Referring to the class chart, write the pros and cons for allowing boys do “girl things” and girls to do “boy things.”

That's interesting . . . I never knew the Ass-Boy Indians were such trend-setters among gays and lesbians.

How about we get the literacy rate up to 95% or so, the math and science scores ahead of the rest of the world, before we even consider spending any time cramming this down kids' throats?

I guess why we now know why the Ass-boy tribe is extinct.

Yeah, go ask a Highlander regiment if it's about 'gender identity.' I dare you.

Oh, for gosh sakes, just toss the toys out there and let the little kids play with whatever pleases them. It wouldn't prove ANYTHING about their sexual orientation.

A little girl has an older brother who owns some really neat cars and trucks, but won't let her touch them. What does she head for in kindergarten? The cars and trucks because she can finally play with the forbidden toys. She gets marked as having male tendencies.

A little boy's mom just had a new baby. He's been forbidden to touch the baby unless mom is present. He's wildly curious. He heads for the baby doll. Quick, put him down for a future sex change.

These people are determined to confuse as many little tykes as they can.

"Grade Level

K-6

Key Ideas

Sometimes persons want to marry of the same gender

"The Princess Petunia
A fairy tale about a princess who helps her father to see that everyone should be free to marry whomever he or she loves

Before the Play (Activities and/or discussion questions)

Write the word, “Families” in the middle of the chalk or whiteboard. Draw a circle around it with lines coming out in all directions. Ask the students to tell you the different kinds of family structures they know and write them at the end of the lines, e.g., single mom and one child, mom and dad and two children, husband and wife with no children, etc.

After the Play

Discussion Questions:

Do you know any families with two women or two men?
What did the King want Princess Petunia to do at the beginning of the poem?
Did Princess Petunia want to marry Prince Poppy?
Why not? Did she hate him?
Who did the Princess want to marry?

Extension Activity

Read, “Families, a Coloring Book,” by Michael Willhoite or another book that shows diverse kinds of families. Return to the graphic you and the students have made. Ask the students if they would like to add to it. Make any additions that are suggested.

Other Related Activities

Language Arts

For younger children, provide or read books that show diverse families: “Who’s in a Family;” Daddy’s Roommate” and “Daddy’s Wedding” by Michael Willhoite; and “Two Moms, the Zark & Me” by Johnny Valentine. Discuss the family structures pictured in the stories.

For older students, have them research on the internet and in magazines and newspapers stories about the same-sex marriage debate. Have students write about the two positions. Invite speakers to share their points of view. Discuss the legal rights of married persons versus the legal rights of persons living together, but not married.

Math
Have the students draw a picture of the members of their family. Make a class graph of the number of persons in each student’s family. Compare and contrast the diversity of family structures and the number of people in each family.

Music
Listen to the various music used in marriage ceremonies all over the world and of different cultures.

How many of the good folks of GLSEN do you think ever use math and science in their daily lives?

I hope the Southern Baptist Convention okays that resolution to ask Baptists to pull their kids out of public schools.

Unfortunately, this kind of stuff spreads like wildfire and more and more public schools are going to embrace it.

Given the fact that gays can't actually have children, it amazes me that their curriculum is given so much attention in schools. Where are the parents?

GLSEN is nothing shor of an efort to recruit children into sexua conduct.

What happend to the christian group getting onto the school boards? We can't just protect one child we need to protect them ALL.

BTW why not have a homeschooler mom or dad on a school board?

The GLSEN folk has been running all-day teachers institute sessions (Teacher participation mandatory) in Illinois Distrct 214 this year, to encourage teachers not to suggest that sexual orientation is innate ("These roles are socailly assigned") and that kids be encouraged to feel free to explore their "sexual orientation options".

The parents and other meddlesome interlopers were not informed.

I did not see troy. In the illiad Ulysses was searching or Achiles. Achilles was hiding disgused with the maides in a castle. Ulyses posed as a peddler selling various goods, he spread his wares and watched. The women went for the dresses, exept one woman who went for the weapons and swords, achilles.

lesson of story? A tiger is a tiger.

Such efforts to teach boys not to be boys are doomed to cause problems.

"Where are the parents?" Generally, parents are neither consulted nor informed on these matters.

"The Princess Petunia -

Does this include Puss In Boots, The Frog Prince, or Stinky The Skunk? Should people who don't live in "fairy world" be permitted to marry cats, frogs, or skunks?

Homosexual Agenda Ping - I've been gone a few days and missed some heavy stuff...

Great, kindergarten indoctrination. If you can take this in stride, you need to get a grip on reality.

Do you want your children, grandchildren, or ANYONE'S children's minds and hearts mutilated by this Brave New World evil?

It's beyond belief. Part of my mind just can't believe this is really happening.

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.

I find myself doing that as well. Just in disbelief - how can things be this bad and the presstitutes are reporting it as though it's not only normal and acceptable but improvement?

If those who see the truth about moral degeneracy in general and homosexuality in particular do NOT stand up, we are also guilty for allowing everything to go to hell.

Just think of the "good" Germans - the ones who didn't like Hitler and the Nazis, but shut up out of fear of rocking the boat, getting fired, and so on. If they had done something before Hitler gained ultimate power, millions of Jews and others might have been saved.

We have a serious responsibility to take action, whatever each of us can do.

Isn't that the reverse of what the SSAD agenda pushes - that SSADs are born and must stay that way?
