The Stem Cell Cover-Up

Posted May 24, 2004

By Michael Fumento

Activists such as Christopher Reeve have it backward when they say that restrictions on funding for embryonic stem-cell research will prevent him from walking again.

Stem-cell research constitutes one of the most exciting areas in medical science. It promises to prevent, ameliorate and cure diseases for which there are now few if any treatments. Far easier is listing what stem cells don't have the potential to do, but here are a few of the wonders in progress:

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Constitution/Conservatism; Crime/Corruption; Culture/Society; Extended News; Government; Philosophy; Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: abortionlist; adultstemcells; asc; biasinthemedia; bonemarrow; cary; esc; escr; fumento; mediabias; michaelfumento; nature; prolife; science; stemcells

This is pretty much a compilation of all the stuff that has been out there.

IMO, he exaggerates the cure claims and then calls it a cover up.

The only people exaggerating the cure claims are folks who need a cure and are supporting the research. I can understand their need, but I have never said nor believed that any cure will be forthcoming in my lifetime.

The complexity of what they are dealing with will take longer than it took to figure out the human genome.

Of this I have no doubt.

I don't think that fact will convince anyone to stop investigating. The goal is a worthy one, but he means are what we are discussing.

This will certainly be a topic of conversation next year and beyond.

Forgive this one more note. Using the approved ESC lines, the true goal ought to be to discover just how to control stem cell differentiation into the three fundamental cell lines of the tissue structure of the human body. If the embryonic lines approved fro current federal funding could accomplish this, then it is likely that MAPCs will be 'backed up' in the stem cell cascade, to come forward again into the tissue lines needed. THAT is the only thing I would expect to be discovered via the study of embryonic stem cells and the applications of stem cells using stem cells from the patient to be treated will remain superior to using the stem cells from an embryonic other individual human with a different histamine code that causes tissue rejection in the target patient.

Sorry to keep you from your work. Be well.

You might be surprised when I say that I agree with you.

That is the primary reason that Bush said there were enough lines to study.

Only a few people have voiced complaint about the existing lines.

The fact is, that the death of Reagan and Nancy's support of the cause has brought about the proverbial knee jerk on both sides of this issue.

I am sorta in the middle, so I see them both.

I think what it is..........is that the Euro trash has the best samples and we can't get them.(or something to that effect)

Most scientists are liberal Bush haters as well.

Another ASC researcher who strongly supports funding for ESCs is Patricia Zuk, whose lab has shown that America's most plentiful natural resource - body fat - can provide a limitless source for stem cells capable of differentiating into bone, muscle, cartilage and fat that can be used to fill in scars and wrinkles.

Man, that is my kind of research!

Michael Fumento: a voice of reason in the sometimes hysterical arena of stem-cell research. ACS is practical, as well as promising and it doesn't require the death of another human. A right-on article in all ways.

I heard a statement from John Feckless Kerry today that challenged the President to fund stem cell research and not block federal funding of stem cell research. His statement was clearly meant to obfuscate, mixing adult stem cell research (not banned; no federal funds withheld from that research) and embryonic stem cell research. It is blatantly apparent that the democrats are seeking to confuse and manipulate the population, herding voters into believing the President is somehow blocking 'stem cell research'. OR, perhaps ol' Feckless really doesn't know the difference in adult stem cell research and application and embryonic exploitation for embryonic stem cells! Naw, his handlers and his boss at the dnc knows damn well that he was to purposely imply a false notion. Typical lying democrats, disdaining the American voters as sheep to be manipulated with lies and half-truths.

FOX news never seems to NEVER differentiate between Adult and Embryonic Stem Cell use thus continues to confuse and deceive people. For some reason they have a hard time inserting the word "adult" in the teleprompter script the news reporters read.

Damn, Michael, you were supposed to explain it not grow it to adulthood, punish it and bury it; if Fumento can't make this brief, it is hopelessly lost to the spindoctors.

I cannot help but think there is more to this than stem cells. It looks more like a power struggle to further undermine and desensitize us to the sanctity of life.

Personally, I would rather live in a debilitated state or even die than have a treatment that cost someone else their life; I know where I am going, and only ONE person died for me, who am but someone entirely unworthy thereof.
