LOS ANGELES (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union is demanding the removal of a tiny cross that is among historic symbols on Los Angeles County's official seal. The seal "prominently depicts a Latin cross, a sectarian religious symbol that represents the beliefs of one segment of the county's diverse population" and is an "impermissible endorsement of Christianity" by the county government, the ACLU Foundation of Southern California said in a letter to county officials this week. "Under clearly established law, the seal is unconstitutional," the letter said, warning that refusal to remove the cross in a "reasonable time-frame" would cause the ACLU to seek a court order.

Why are we supposed to kowtow to the minority on every issue? Isn't this nation based on MAJORITY RULE?

No Way......That cross belongs to the American Taxpayers; not the ACLU.

I used to think the ACLU was simply the Devil's Advocate.

Now I'm sure of it.

Nope - it's not.

That's why the electoral college is so cool.

I'm still waiting to hear the ACLU weigh in on the Hammtrack Michigan city council bending the law so a mosque could broadcast amplified recordings of the call to prayer (5 times a day from 6AM to 10PM).

The ACLU stands for AntiChristian Liberals Union.

I hear ya. I wouldn't mind doing away with (or greatly modifying) the Electoral College so that my vote for Bush will actually count. (I'm so sick of seeing my vote literally counted as nothing when California's 54 electoral votes go to the Democrat.)

What is the ACLU going to do with the names of cities such as La Crosse, WI, and Los Cruces, NM? And all the towns named Saint Paul, MN, and all the Santa ...s? Where does this nonsense end?

So the ACLU is converned about the tiny cross under the larger oil derrick (does LA want us to worship oil?) but misses completely the huge frickin' image of the pagan goddess "Pomona, the goddess of gardens and fruit trees" standing in the middle of the seal? Or is just that pagan symbols are OK, but Christian symbols are verboten in the ACLU world?

ACLU obviously has WAY too much money and time on their hands. It is one thing to bully a small municipality into covering up part of their history, but the very name 'Los Angeles' conjures up images of divine and heavenly beings of supernatural power. Are they going to go after cities that have similar connotations in their names, like San Antonio, or San Francisco, or St. Petersburg?
