I don't think he was morally obligated to reject these offers if they were similar to the one included in the article, but his decision shows great piety, and is probably a wise decision, even if he had decided to donate the proceeds to charity.
I agree that his decision IS wise-- no matter how much good the money might have done, the trivialization of the gospel and the mocking of Christ would have done FAR more harm. The level of physical poverty in the world is dwarfed by the level of spiritual poverty.
