The Submarine Training Facility at Norfolk Virgnia held it's annual Submarine Veterans Memorial Service today. Submarines were less than 10% of our naval forces in World War II yet accounted for the lion's share of merchant shipping sunk. Submarines greatly contributed to the victory in World War II. In honor of these brave men, here is a list of the submarines that we lost during the war.

They did it without advanced sonar, without nuclear power, without modern fire control systems. They did it without family grams or email, without receiving regular news bulletins, without much of the creature comfort us modern day submariners enjoy. Our hats are off to you, gentlemen. Thank you for your service to our country.

DIVE DIVE Ping
Reminds me of the 2 whales--George and Gracie--from one of the Star Trek movies. "Beam'em up, Scotty!"
Dang! Never mind. Angelfire sucks !!! I gotta get a new provider. Any ideas ?
Wonderful story. Compare it to what SBS offers at schools today if you want to be depressed.
(steely)
Do you have any links, or pics for the WW II sub memorial at Pearl Harbor.. It's little known sadly, and IMHO, a beautiful reminder of the boast and crew who are on "eternal patrol"
Sonar ping bump
Sorry Ken. Tired to google it and even went to navy region pearl harbors web page. Didn't find anything.
I'll look, and if I find anything. I'll let you know. It's a beautifully done site..each lost boat is represented by a stone slab, they'e arrayed in an arc..t's liek a graveyard..with the boats' name, history, misson, etc, engraved...
Bumping for my Uncle Mike who served on the Carp and the Requin.
A bubblehead salutes these brave men.
(USS GRENADIER SS-525, USS GEORGE BANCROFT SSBN-643)
Diesel Boats Forever!!

"Death from below"
I downloaded and watched a very interesting wartime documentary on subs from Movieflix a few weeks ago, featuring color footage of what I presumed to be the actual crew of the Trigger taken on a earlier patrol, before she was sunk with all hands. She was highest ranking sub in tonnage sunk when she was lost.
The loss of the Sculpin was also featured in detail, some amazing color film.

Sincere thanks.
Point well made.
The ceremony we had here was very moving. There is a USS Shark II memorial here beside the building and they have a sailor reading the names of the boats and another sailor tolls the bell once for each boat.
Thanks...awesome site..I'd been there years ago...didnt' realize it was the "BowFIn" memorial..and not a Sub memorial..though it really doesn't make a difference...I'm gonna ping the Vets corner bunch..we were talking about this a few days ago...regards to you both...BSunday..hope you enjoy it..
My father, Jim, at 32yrs, was too old for WWII, as well as being a commercial tuna fisherman when Pearl harbor was attacked. Tuna fishing was considered a vital war industry, so my father fished for the duration. Off the coast of Mexico, my dads fishing boat was sunk by a Japanese Sub surfacing from underneath the boat. I don't know how long he and the crew were in the water, but it was the US Navy Sub that was chasing the Japanese Sub that surfaced and rescued the crew of the "Sunshine". The crew were transferred to a Mexican Coast Guard boat and the US Sub continued its hunt for the enemy.
Therefore, if I offend any of you on this forum, you can thank the United States Navy Submarine Service. They saved my Dad some years before I was born. Thanks Guys.
Regards, Buck.
that's the thing about us bubbleheads..we've allways been politically Incorrect by nature *L*
USS G.C. Marshall SSBN 654 82-86
USS Shark SSN 591 86-90 (Decomm Crew)
Check out #17 this thread..awesome website..HiJnx found it...it's under the USS Bowfin...and especially appropriate this Memorial day weekend.. May I suggest you post a link for the group on tomorrow's thread.....regards..
The Silent Service lost the highest percentage of its ranks during WW II...Charlie Lockwood is, IMHO, the most underappeciated commander in WW II..
BUMP for my late Uncle Pete, who served on the USS Sqaulus, later named the USS Sailfish. May he RIP.
Hey, didn't you just recommend this to me for a thread? :-)
It's in the works.
I did, but we couldn't find the link...now we did...so I passe it on..aren't I your P/T research-assistant?
Of course I'm sure the '40's version of ANSWER called them, "innocent-slaughtering pirates," since they were after merchants. What's that? There were no antiwar retards in the '40s? Never mind.
Thanks for the ping...

Would you please add me to your list?
And the city council in Olympia WA just voted to keep the USS Olympia from docking in their city.
Good find HiJinx. Lots of good info on the "Silent Service"
Sam..I spent an hour trying to find it...who knew it waas the USS Bowfin memorial, and not the Submarine Memorial..go figure eh?...and of course, the fact that my "search" techniques suck didn't help either..
Yeah, you'd think that "Subrmarine Memorial" would at least get one hit that would lead you to the site.
LOL. Yes you are. I'm so fortunate to have so many helpers. Keep the ideas coming!
That's funny, because Submarine Memorial is exactly what I used...but it still required digging. It wasn't until the third page, where I saw a synopsis of the hit that connected the Bowfin to Pearl Harbor, that I realized I should be looking for something different.
In the meantime, I had a thoroughly enjoyable time checking out other pages!
My "search" techniques..how shall I put it.. suck!..I probably end up Googlebombing myself...
"Submarine Memorial" gave me a hit to the picture of the memorial, but since you had already found the info I stopped looking further.
can't find it......pls provide more detail.
thanks in advance
