Live Aid II By GEORGE PASCOE-WATSON Deputy Political Editor

LIVE Aid is to be held AGAIN — 20 years on.

The mega concert to ease Third World debt — on the anniversary of the 1985 original — will be unveiled this week.

Tony Blair is backing what promises to be the greatest pop bash in history.

Last night a Whitehall source confirmed: “It’s going to be bigger and better than before.”

Live Aid II is the brainchild of U2 rocker Bono, 44.

He will officially announce it this week.

Robbie Williams and Oasis are tipped to head a stellar line-up of acts next year that could also include Coldplay and Radiohead.

Sir Paul McCartney and Phil Collins, stars of the first Live Aid, may also appear.

The 1985 event, staged simultaneously at Wembley and in Philadelphia, was watched on TV by 1.4billion worldwide.

Irish Rocker Geldof Denies Live Aid II Concert

LONDON (Reuters) - Irish rock star Bob Geldof denied on Monday that he had teamed up with fellow rocker Bono for a repeat of the 1985 Live Aid concerts to raise money to help ease third world debt.

The Sun newspaper had earlier run a front page story saying Prime Minister Tony Blair was backing "Live Aid II," which would be fronted by British rockers Robbie Williams, Oasis, Radiohead and Coldplay.

Geldof, the brains behind the original concert to relieve famine in Ethiopia, said in a statement: "I told the Sun this afternoon it was not true. This only serves to undermine the concerted efforts of those concerned with the tragedy of poverty in Africa."

"However, if the Prime Minister wants to organize a Live Aid II, then good luck to him," Geldof added.

The 1985 event raised 60 million pounds ($110.2 million) with simultaneous concerts in Britain and the United States.

they raised over $100 million 1985 dollars (probably equivalent to $250 million in today's dollars). What do they have to show for it?

Want to help the Third World? Kill some dictators and institute strong property rights.

We just need for ALL foreign aid money to be raised this way--then I'll be happy.

This will suck. Nothing will ever stand up to the real and original Live Aid.

"But, say some, Live Aid sets a good example for today's selfish youth, reminding them to be socially concerned. Nonsense. The circus atmosphere of the Live Aid concerts makes the world's problems seem easy and fun to solve and implies that the solutions are naturally uncontroversial. As an example of charity, Live Aid couldn't be worse." - P.J. O'Rourke

Phil Collins is going to top his previous performance. The man is going to play in Russia, go into orbit aboard the Russian Space SHuttle, do an acoustic version of Against All Odds, come back to Earth, parachute into Biff Kelleher's backyard in Paramus, N.J., be whisked away to Radio City and play with Emerson lake and Palmer.

sounds like Geldof is not amused by doing this again and thinks its counterproductive.

Hmm...OK, I can't say Chucky's wedding made any dent in my calendar. I am more with Keith Richards' comments after her death (not P/C to restate this)

But I go with you on Live Aid and the Collins thing. I preferred him being with Genesis but still.

Sigh... :-)

BARF!! Right up there with "We Are the World".

Maybe Michael Jackson will come and do a duet with McCartney on "Ebony and Ivory" and then lead the whole crew into a heart-felt rendition of "We are the World".

This will suck. Nothing will ever stand up to the real and original Live Aid.

Considering that when Live Aid originally ran on TV, Dick Clark cut away from the live Led Zeppelin reunion to replay Madonna's performance, I certainly hope it doesn't live up to that. (I wasn't even a Zeppelin fan back then, but I still knew how ridiculous that move was.)

"It's going to be bigger and better than before."

What a joke. No way in hell will it be better than the original Live Aid. Also, this one would be politicized beyond belief. The original was like a regular concert, now every bozo up on stage will spout off about Bush and Iraq instead of shutting up and singing. Then there's the bands that would be at Live Aid II. They would pale in comparison to the original lineup. I think I'll pass.
