Did they also condemn the killing of Berg?
This is exactly the kind of double speak rope-a-dope that I spoke of previously.
To me, a terrorist is someone who attacks non-military/police/government people in order to inflict terror on a population. It is possible that attacks on soldiers, police or government workers also can be interpreted as terrorism, depending upon the facts and circumstances of a particular case.
I don't know anything about Afghan "freedom fighters" who are trying to get their country into shape. Would you enlighten me? What actions are they taking?
What's your point? Are you saying Reagan's strategy of supporting freedom fighters in Afghanistan was wrong? Are you saying that those Afghan and Pakistani Muslims who died with our CIA operatives in the Cold War aren't appreciated? Speak up, man. Tell us how much you regret Ronald Reagan's decision.
Risk, I don't know what you're talking about.
As I wrote, I don't know anything about Afghan "freedom fighters" who are trying to get their country into shape. Would you do me the honor of enlightening me, or would you prefer to insinuate? You really don't need to take out your secret decoder ring to understand my posting. It's all on the surface: I don't know who these Afghan "freedom fighters" are, and so I don't have an opinion about whether they are terrorists.
I don't know what you're talking about, either. I'm offering my appreciation to the Muslims around the world who fought side by side with our own agents to defeat communism. The Taliban and the al Qaeda today are related to them, but are also different. I appreciate Ronald Reagan's decision to support opponents of communism with Muslim help. I also appreciate the help Muslims gave us in Indonesia and other parts of the world. If you don't appreciate that help, then say so and be done with it.
Ayatollah Khomenini ranted against the Great Satan (u.S.) and the lesser Satan (soviet Union)even though Smilin' Jimmy Carter opened the door for him to return to Iran. So just what was the genius in being overly generous with arms support to people who hated us as well as our common enemy? The enemy of my enemy is my friend is a very dangerous belief;remember the rabbit watching the wolf and bear fight over which one will have rabbit for dinner?
I think we can look at each region where we attempted to use Islam as a "green belt" or a bulwark against communism and find problems. I wouldn't characterize America as a rabbit in this current conflict, though. Even if some Americans are sheep.
yeah so does arafat... Ask him why he is here, go to pakistan, saudi, or syria to a mosque and say that.... he wont.
Not all rabbits are the same.
And didn't Bugs Bunny represent America in the classic fighting "Sam the Hessian",and the moment in which Bugs picks up a book in the trash, discovers it is Mein Kampf, and tosses it into the dump is very American, We are willing to look at other ideas but discard the trash (or we used to!)
sadly I don't believe its possible. Anything done at this point is only going to come across as a fake PR effort.
But will it happen? That's up to how American they are.
Yep, I agree, it was pretty wishy-washy and the Muslim community's response has been very weak. I think I saw a report about Detroit Iraqi-Americans complaining about US troops in Iraq. I don't really know what the heck is going through their minds.
But it's a start. At least they're encouraging their own community to help law enforcement.
"The council's campaign says the Muslim community should give law enforcement information on terrorist suspects and emphasize that 'terrorism is not a valid means of struggle in Islam.' It also urges 'know who's meeting in your mosque' and urges mosque leaders to make sure to authorize all lectures or talks there. In addition, law enforcement agencies should train Muslims to identify potential terrorists and mosques should increase their communication so they can work together in combatting terrorism."
IMHO, the best tips to catch terrorists are going to come from within their community, supplementing our 'electronic intercepts.'
