It was supposed to be an event where World War II-era journalists could swap war stories and bask in the glory of the soon-to-be christened WWII memorial on Washington, D.C.'s mall.
But it didn't take long for CBS "60 Minutes" star Mike Wallace and USA Today founder Al Neuharth, who had been invited to address the crowd, to turn Friday's WWII reminiscence into bash-Bush rally.
Wallace began innocently enough, telling the crowd that in WWII, "We knew what we were fighting for. We knew how important it was. We loved our country. We loved our commander-in-chief.
"And when Pearl Harbor came and we finally got in, it was a damn good thing that we did," the veteran newsman recalled.
But then Wallace turned abruptly political:
"I look at where we are today and I say to myself, I wouldn't want to - this is not, in my estimation, a good war. . . . George Washington was commander-in-chief and president of the United States. Franklin Roosevelt was commander-in-chief and president of the United States. I don't have to persuade anybody of the validity of those two guys."
But when it came to President Bush, the CBS newsman lamented:
"I don't know how we got into a position where our present commander-in-chief and the people around him had the guts to take our kids and send them on what seems to be - it sure is not a noble enterprise."
At that point some in the audience, annoyed at Wallace's attempt to politicize what was supposed to be a WWII commemoration, began heckling him.
USA Today's Al Neuwarth stepped in and tried to calm the waters by noting that "all wars are bad wars." But within minutes, he too was bashing Bush.
"I'm proud of every veteran in this country, who fought in any of [the wars]. That includes Iraq," Neuharth announced. "But I must agree with [Mike] - we stumbled and bumbled our way into this war."
The USA Today founder complained, "That decision was not made by the troops who are over there fighting and dying. It was made in the Oval Office. And I think it does raise a question of whether we were absolutely right when our Founding Fathers said that the president of the United States shall be the commander-in-chief of our military forces.
Neuharth continued:
"They were right with George Washington. He had been a military person. But I'm not sure whether a non-military commander-in-chief, no matter which party he's from and no matter who he or she is, has the background or the instincts to take us to war."
At that point boos again erupted from the crowd and moderator Thomas Doherty tried to get the event back on track. But it was too late for many.
Square One Media Network's Kathryn Serkes was on hand and she tells NewsMax that at least 50 attendees got up and stormed out because of Wallace and Neuharth's partisan antics.
Although the event was televised by C-Span, the network declined to archive the video on its web site. NewsMax thanks Ms. Serkes for sharing her copy.
Be advised that Al Neuharth had no difficulty whatsoever with the very non-military President Bill Clinton, a draft dodger, taking us to war in Kosovo.
And let's not even talk about the real motivations behind Billy's Balkan Adventure...
Neuharth continued:

Gee, doesn't that sound like the lunatic general in Dr. Strangelove?
General Jack D. Ripper: "But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought."
This logic would exclude Abe Lincoln, FDR and Woodrow Wilson - The presidents who lead us through and won the three largest wars in American history. The presidents who had a military background, Kennedy and Johnson, gave us Vietnam. You tell me who did the better job.
Why are these traitorous scum even invited to events like this? Hopefully it opened the eyes of those who would otherwise vote for J F'n K because he's a "veteran."
I guess I'm just a little hyped-up from yesterday's Memorial Day service at Fort Snelling National Ceremony in Minneapolis. The despicable Mark Dayton was a speaker that got my heart beating so fast I wanted to sucker-punch the guy and I'm a 5'2", petite middle-aged mom.
He went on to spew about the importance of dissent (which I agree with when it's not all liberal lies!) and basically said he supports the troops and let's bring them home as soon as possible.
What a POS! BTW, he garnered little applause.
Um.... that was Dan Rather actually, but Wallace is repugnant in his own right.
What came to my mind when I read this, after "the bastards" that is, was "who the hell invited these prix to speak at this event, anyway?" I am asking this question a lot lately, after reading many posts about so many leftist assholes fouling up one event after another with their treasonous bullshit. I ask again, who the hell invited these prix, anyway? Whoever it was, where-ever it was, those responsible for letting these dogs in the yard to crap all over the place should be kicked out on their own asses!
Those two guys are trash but there is some good news here.
The crowd knew they were trash. They booed and walked out. That's great!

The apple does not fall far from the tree.
I do not watch the Sunday shows and have gotten three other people to stop watching them.
As far as cbs, abc, nbc, the newspapers and other alphetabet news organizations go, I stopped watching them and reading the newspapers during the impeachment hearings. And have no desire to return to watching or reading.
Forget their sponsors. They only want to know if you are watching. Just stop watching them. Then the sponsors can just pound their money down a rat hole.
I started a campaign to boycott CBS, all CBS sponsors, MTV, ViaCom, Simon & Schuster long ago.
I have added it in personal email lists to all over the USA and have mentioned it in FR posts before.
Just do it.
When NBC and ABC see CBS numbers and sponsors drop they will "chat" with producers, writers, and directors, and news anchors like Couric and Wallace and Jennings and Brokow.
There numbers at the big 3 major TV networks are tanking.
Add the NYT and WP and LAT and Atlanta J-P
All are dropping while WSJ, NYP, WT are growing substantially.
Do you buy poisoned food for your family and kids?
Why then buy poisoned TV shows, news, newspapers?
Why the big holdup, why when CBS got slammed over the Ronald Reagan TV movie smear?
Enough talk.
