Thanks for the link. I'd like to hear a bit more from Rice herself and not a small blip attributed to her. Aside from the abortion issue, Rice has never held an elected position at any level of government. She needs to get her feet wet before even thinking about going for POTUS or VPOTUS.

Unfortunately, the primary system is now front loaded (the reason for that was to make it difficult for another outsider like Reagan to get the nomination); and there are no big-name conservatives really pushing for conservative ideals anymore.

I think the only way to pull it off is through extensive use of the internet, sort of like what Howard Dean did last year. But then you saw how he was crushed by the media machine...

Unfortunately, you appear to be right. Even if an outside Conservative did gain a lot of popular support, the long-time politicians in the GOP would find a way to push them aside.

90% of those mentioned by people in this thread are career politicians. I don't foresee a major shake-up of the GOP anytime soon.

Basically those in the upper echelon of the GOP, or who are blessed so to speak, that's who your candidates for the next three or four election cycles will be.

Yep. "They" will tell us who the nominee will be. It's a catch-22. If their guy wins the general election, they will use that as an excuse to move further left (see, we told you only a 'moderate' could win). OTOH, if their guy loses, they will blame conservatives (see, we need someone even more liberal to run).

You can't say that about Perry, you act as though he was an up and coming star of the DNC before realizing which way the wind was blowing and switching to the GOP..waitaminute, he was an up and coming star of the DNC and he did switch when he saw what was happening...

I would love to have a real choice among candidates. Unfortunately, the GOP leadership picks the candidates who can pull in the most central/moderate votes, because they know we won't vote for a liberal.

I really don't see the GOP going back to the right in the near future. I love how the liberals portray the GOP as a bunch of right-wing religious fanatics, when in fact, we are headed by mostly moderates.

I'll probably catch some flak for saying this, but I really think we can do better than what we have and what we will have, in regards to the upper GOP. It's just those that can do better know they don't stand a chance coming from the outside/Conservative beliefs, or they don't want to sink down to what campaigning has become these days. Used to be you could run on your personal merit. Now it's how bad you can make the other person look. Unfortunately, the GOP engages in these tactics almost as much as the DNC. I see this at the county level.
