And Yesterday...they were in Afghanistan

Several soldiers, serving in Afghanistan, got up close and personal with country superstar Toby Keith and rocker Ted Nugent.

Keith and Nugent spent the night in Kabul entertaining soldiers from the 45th Infantry Brigade, which is based in Oklahoma City. The pair greeted the men and women, signed autographs and of course sang.

The 45th Infantry is part of the Coalition Task Force Phoenix, responsible for training the Afghan National Army.

ILLESHEIM, Germany — There were no “Angry Americans” in Illesheim as rocker Ted Nugent and country giant Toby Keith unleashed a free Memorial Day concert to pay tribute to soldiers and their families. About 7,000 people from military communities in Germany attended the concert. Many communities offered free bus transportation to the site. Before the concert, hundreds of people had their photos taken with Keith and Nugent. In an effort to get all of the people in line in during the hourlong photo opportunity, groups of at least 10 people were rushed through. Digital photos will be available in about two weeks on the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Web site — www.mwr-europe.com — according to Lisa Eichhorn, 235th Base Support Battalion spokeswoman. Still, some who hoped to have their photo taken were turned away as time ran out. “I was the first one in the group they had to turn away,” said Joellen Arthur, from Schweinfurt. “I’m leaving for the States in a couple days and it was disappointing.” However, Arthur said she expected the concert to make up for it. “I can’t wait for the concert,” she said. “He’s been my favorite country singer since he started. I’ve always been a Toby Keith fan.” During the 90-minute concert, Keith performed his troops-praising singles “The Taliban Song” and “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American).” Nugent performed “Cat Scratch Fever” and a screaming guitar version of the national anthem. Early on Monday, Keith and Nugent visited Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and spoke with soldiers who had been injured in Iraq. “There was one girl who was waiting to have surgeries done, and we couldn’t get her to smile,” Keith said. “But the reason she wasn’t smiling is that the doc wouldn’t release her to get back to her unit in Iraq. “It was an awful quiet ride on the way back [to Illesheim]. It was a very emotional time.” Keith said he enjoys performing for the troops. “They’re hard-working people and want peace just like everybody else,” he said. “But their mission is to make that peace.” Nugent said meeting servicemembers was a wake-up call. “It was a real powerful slap in the face,” he said. “The rest of the world is relaxed and comfortable, and they don’t even know why. “We got to see the people who are fighting for that and willing to die for it.”

I see Toby made VH1s list of top 100 worst songs ever. When VH1 pushes an agenda they don't let chart toppers get in the way. They seem to have a real problem with patriotism.

Ted Nugent. Man, I've been listening to this cat all the way back to the days of Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. "Great White Buffalo", "Call of the Wild" and all those other classics. He's still one of my faves.

Hmm...you've reminded me that I need to send something to someone in the 45th.

Additionally, I got to hear actor Gary Sinise on KABC radio here in Los Angeles last
night promoting a program to get school supplies to Iraq. Host Al Rantel (Okla. State U.
grad) had Sinise on for a full hour. Sinise seems to be cut from the other decent guy
from Malibu (aside from Mel Gibson), as he gave a very humble summary of his USO tours and
his charitable work.
The thread is over here:

Oh, and the working link to the charity Sinise works on is in post 14 on that thread.

Toby Keith, Ted Nugent Rock NSA Naples

Story Number: NNS040604-03
Release Date: 6/4/2004 10:47:00 AM

By Journalist 1st Class Eric Brown, Commander, Fleet Activities Mediterranean Public Affairs

NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- As part of a USO-sponsored tour, country superstar Toby Keith was joined onstage by rock legend Ted Nugent for a loud and highly-anticipated concert on Naval Support Activity, Naples' Support Site in the early evening hours of June 1.

Thousands of local American service members and their families showed up for the warm weather, cold drinks, smoky barbeque and free music, “courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.”

The tour kicked off in Kosovo May 28, and will continue for about eight to 10 more shows on undisclosed overseas U.S. military bases in the upcoming weeks.

Keith and Nugent, in addition to a backing band, are taking their message straight to the troops.

“It’s all appreciation for us,” Keith said in an interview shortly before taking the Naples stage. “We’ll shake every hand we can and meet every person we can, and if nothing else, leave them with a little piece of Americana.”

Continuing the thought, Nugent added, “We are here to celebrate all those who came here to enjoy this American music that we play, but it is also dedicated to those who are not here anymore.”

During their performance, the duo blasted their way through chart-toppers such as “I Love This Bar” and the classic “Cat Scratch Fever,” but for many, the highlight was Nugent’s instrumental rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which brought the crowd to its feet, hands and cowboy hats pressed over their hearts.

This tour has been a great time for Nugent. Playing with Keith is giving him an opportunity to do things he’s never done before.

“I’m looking forward to playing with a country/western band for the first time in my life,” he said.

“This ain’t actually his first time tonight,” interjected Keith. “It’s actually his third time playing with us!”

Keith said that he does a USO tour for American troops overseas every two years.

“Mostly, I just enjoy seeing the glow on people’s faces,” he said. “Their hearts shine a big light up through their eyes and smiles. For a brief time, they can forget about their day-to-day problems out here.”

Although not a country music fan, Yeoman 2nd Class (AW) Stephanie Titus, of Commander, Task Force 63, was in the audience Tuesday night, having fun.

“The evening was good,” she recalled. “It was very cool that Toby Keith got to come out here, and I really liked hearing ‘Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American).’ He seems like a really good guy.”

Both Keith and Nugent are unabashed in their support of the troops they play for night after night.

“These guys are ready to rock for all the right reasons,” Nugent enthused. “Our warriors are pushing back terror here so that we don’t have to face terror at home.”

The Keith/Nugent duo is equally impressed and supportive of the USO, which has sent entertainers and entertainment to millions of service members since its inception in 1941.

“The USO accomplishes a lot for the American armed forces, and they handle it all on a budget that I thought was unbelievably small, and impossible to do,” Keith said.

“It’s surprising how little you hear about the USO back in the States,” Nugent added. “Especially when you consider that it’s such an awesome, compassionate, generous and positive force. What Bob Hope did during World War II, and the Korean War, and Vietnam, and what Robin Williams and Kid Rock and Toby Keith are doing – I’m moved to be a part of that.

Orrin Hatch (ick!) was on Hannity(?) today and said that about 3 dozen Repub Senators spent time today with our servicemen who are at Walter Reed. He said our soldiers were all itching to get healed so they can go back. What incredible people! We are truly blessed.

Keith and Nuggent are awesome.

We should all get involved. The U.S.O. has a program to send care packages.

I'll give a bump and link to another fantastic concert given by Keith in a
more intimate venue:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/909328/posts

that empty box in post 45 on that thread represents the one image I curse myself for
not having "appropriated".
It showed Patrick Miller singing, Keith in profile smiling hugely, and some
good ole boy standing behind them and whooping it up at the top of his lungs.
It was instant classic Americana.

Our last adoptee recently came home and talked to the kids. They gave him a standing ovation. What a rush!

Beef jerky was on the list we had as well. Never acquired a taste for it myself! Also sent a sealed canister of ice tea crystals which they wanted.

Think it is neat to adopt the soldiers and let everyone know how much we care! Bet the kids really had a great time but bet the soldier had even a better time.

Ted Nugent is truly one of the good guys. When my son was on leave after serving on the Teddy Roosevelt during the Gulf War, and was returning to his ship, he was waiting for his flight at O'Hare.

Ted was also awaiting a flight and approached my son and struck up a conversation. Just one of the guys.

I guess they know that they got sent even though specific APO/FPO addresses
were required due to security concerns.
(Unlike the "to any soldier/sailor" addressing permitted in the good old days
before 9-11 and that b@$tard Osama).

If a stranger cares enough to track down an APO/FPO, then still sends a package,
that shows they really do care!

Although Toby is undoubtedly supportive of our military, I read recently that he is a Democrat (but many think he is a Republican)....Maybe spending so much time with Nuge will rub the Dem-ness off of him and he can embrace those who would embrace him --- REPUBLICANS.

OTOH Given a choice I'll take a DINO over a RINO any day.
