The world is not as "black and white" as you portray it.

Folks can disagree with your politics and still be good folks.

Dan Rather is that you?

Courage..
Nobody knew what the hell that meant...

More writing his own legacy. I wonder if he knows how much Uncle Walter is reviled by a large chunk of the population? Nah....

"...give Rather the benefit of the doubt."

You're right! (I can't believe how many replies my post on this has generated.)

It is a beautiful essay that came from the heart. Even if one didn't see it delivered on TV, you can read it and come away with that very same conclusion.

Calm down. In an earlier post, someone insinuated that the essay piece was done weeks or months ago by CBS and Rather. That's why I made that comment, my dear Fellow Freeper.

"I saw it and I was moved."

Thank you! I'm reading all of these angry comments about Dan Rather and then I come across a few of you who "get it." Rather showed nothing but pure, primal grief.

If some of you all feel a need to watch FOX News, where the cute young news readers keep confusing the first President Bush with the present, then go ahead.

I would watch Fox if we had cable.

Unfortunately, their coverage on the local network that FNC beamed down was very short, and Dari Alexander wasn't very good, so I switched to the networks.

If Brit was in the house, I would have continued watching FNC.

Folks can disagree with your politics and still be good folks.

I agree with you on that.

My neighbors detest Republicans, and are card carrying Democrats.

They bemoan all of the things happening in our city and state, the very things Democrats have foisted upon us.

However, they are the very people who will be there for you in a second. They are the stuff America is made of, hard working and conscientious. I tried to reason with them, but we don't touch politics anymore.

Dan Rather, on the other hand, is on the nightly news. He's responsible for influencing many people and he's fair game.

I watched my tape of Rather's comments again last night for some reason. It remains the most sincere, heartfelt words of affection for RWR from anyone in the media. Especially when Dan breaks up at the end. It stands up well to anything said over the week.

So, BTT.

Yeah - I stick to my original comments. Dan Rather is a liberal, if he admits it or not. It influences his worldview - of that there is no doubt, except in his own mind. But he is an American, served in the Marines, and I have no doubt that he was sincere in expressing his remorse on the passing of a (great) American President.

He was hit with The constrast between their two lives... and it struck him that in 20 years NO ONE will know who he was.

Your post # 8 was insightful and right on the mark.

You said in a few short paragraphs exactly what I was thinking.
