I would strongly suggest that people use a pinhole viewer to look at the sun.

Stare at the sun long enough and the last thing you will see is a host over the sun.
Go, Venus, Go!
Venus DeMilo Hamilton
Uh, I believe that one's Mars....
I was thinking of the person who posted that last night!
That's the archived thread... well, the first page, anyway.
The original thread was pulled.
Just got in from seeing this. We took lots of pictures from the Pier at Tybee Island Georgia. I will post what I took when I wake up more. It was truly beautiful!
CGEB revisited???
Hawaiians should have particular interest, as Captain Cook's voyage had to do with traveling to a distant point on the globe such that the passing of Venus could be observed from two distant points, necessary to enable certain celestial calculations, including the distance between the earth and sun.
My family and I got up this morning before sunrise and went up to Goffstown, overlooking Manchester, NH, where we ran into a group of nice folks with good telescopes. The photos we took are at http://www.aidoann.com/photos/transit/
The best one is http://www.aidoann.com/photos/transit/transit5.jpg
Unfortunately a big bank of clouds rolled in just two minutes prior to the third contact, so we missed the egress.
Gotta be Mars.
AT last! We'll finally find out how big the astronomical unit is!
? They threw that up while they were talking about Venus... sorry about that, I obviously didn't hear the reference.
Wow that is a GREAT picture, thanks for posting! :)
