Garrison Keillor gets cheers for passing of Ronald Reagan
A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor ^ | 06-08-2004 | Tank-FL

Posted on 06/08/2004 10:55:37 AM PDT by Tank-FL

Feeling sad and having just heard the news that President Ronald Reagan had just passed this past Saturday June 5, 2004 at 5:00 PM I switched my car radio from my local news radio to my local NPR, PRI affiliate to get my fill of the left by listening to A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor.

I can normally make it through the live shows but this last show I had to turn off. The show began with ridicule and cheers from the audience when the Host (Mr. Garrison Keillor) announced that the former President had past away within the last hour. Yes folks, there were cheers in the audience. I waited for the host to ask the audience to refrain from cheers and to show respect, but this never happened. I was so shocked, then I began to understand – it is hate, how the left hates us.

I am posting a link so you can hear this yourself.

These reports are everywhere. I bet their parents want to slap them.

In a lot of the cases, it's the parents doing the cheering.

When I was young and foolish ( as opposed to old and foolish like I am now!) I did not understand how truly mean-spirited Keillor really was.

Haven't listened to him for years.

Gosh, we agree about something.

He is VERY talented, and (like the little girl with the little curl) when he's good, he's very, very good.

But a majorly guiltridden, hateful, spiteful man.

You should have seen this guy when Wellstone died. I'm sure he still feels guilty about handing the Senate seat over to Norm Coleman by his over-the-top antics.

Maybe people should listen to the recording before making a judgment of Keillor. He had kind words for Reagan and there were only two lone cheers in an otherwise respectfully quite audience.

I heard that too, almost the same way. I was braced for Keillor himself to say something hateful, knowing how he loathed Reagan. But he himself was classy. I was appalled at the catcalls and cheers and, like you, waited to see whether he'd slap them down.

Nope.

Now, that would be an odd step-aside from the format. But he could have said SOMETHING. My most charitable thought is that he's kicking himself for not doing so.

Dan

I listened to the clip, and it seemed as if only 1 or 2 people actually screamed. I did not hear much applause at all. I think we all need to listen to it. However, I agree with many here, the democrats are vile and full of hate.

I started to read Lake Woebegon Days once, then I got to a part where he was glad his Dad never played with him, for some strange reason (think it had something to do with his concept of manliness) but I remember thinking, 'this guy is either an idiot or is hiding his true feelings about his father.' My kids love it when I play games with them, and so do I.

The part of the book where a young man returns with some kind of hateful resentful letter to his parents struck me as a classic liberal tome - blaming everyone for his problems but his own sorry self. Perhaps there was more GK in that letter than fictional character.

I was SURPIRSED the first time I saw him. I was in St Paul when i first heard him, undergoing some very nasty surgey that took months. One of the nurses in the hospital told me I should listen, so I gave it a whirl.

I used to listen to "News From Lake Wobegon" and imagine myself out of the hospital, in this idyllic little town.

I imagined Keillor as bing tall and thin, sort of like a young Jimmy Stewert. In my mind's eye, he sat at a desk on the stage and talked into one of those old-style microphons. He always wore a striped shirt and suspeneders, and I found him VERY comforting to listen to.

It was a REAL shock to see this short, pudgy little guy.

And you are right. He DOES look angry.

It shows more if you have ever read his books.

Oh for goodness sake, one or two idiots, no more, let out a whoop, a whoop. Then he sang a lovely song of tribute to Reagan's passing, including finishing off with a grand New Orleans funeral procession song.

I loathe misleading threads, But thanks for the link, and allowing me to hear a self-professed liberal give a very fine tribute to our dear President Reagan.

Speak for yourself. I know there are alot of real haters here on FR, but I am not one of them. In fact, I'll bet MOST freepers are not "haters". At most, I would be indifferent. "Hate" for me, is reserved for guys like Saddam, Bin Laden, Castro, et al. Or who knows, maybe I am in the minority here...

For the record, the same show ended with him singing "America the Beautiful", and an audience 'message' saying hello to a son in the military was greeted with wild cheering and applause.

I missed the beginning of the show, so I didn't hear the announcement, but for the general tone of what I heard I couldn't believe I was listening to PHC.

PS: The missus always insists we listen if we're in the car at that hour.

Let's be fair here. I thought Keillor (who is a hypocritical left-wing bum IMHO) was very gracious, and it's not even clear to me that the two cheers were intended to "dis" Reagan. The cheers could be interpreted as a cheer for Reagan, although I admit that's debatable.

Well, our 'one person' cheering section just got zotted it seems. He evidently started a thread making a (not-so) subtle attempt at implying why Christians shouldn't vote for President Bush.

Even in light of recordings, these people still will lie right to your face. I guess they are so far above us in intelligence that we should fall for anything they say. Why doesn't that work?

Somehow I doubt this report. I used to live downtown St.Paul and the crowd that would stand in front of the Fitzgerald weren't your rabid libs.

Could have been people cheering the man and not his death or maybe Keillor had the applause sign go on at that point, he loves to play Minnesotans for fools.

Glad you said this. Hope it's true. I'd like to believe well of Keillor, because his humor seems to exude affection, not animosity, toward middle America and old-fashioned values. It's hard for me to see how the wry, gentle celebrant of Lake Wobegon's steady, sturdy values could be a hater -- and I want to believe he isn't.

I kinda thought it sounded like one person cheering and another yelling at her to "shut up" or something like that. I thougth GK was very classy in his remarks about Reagan. I won't fault him for what happened. It's just the nature of our society these days. It was probably one of those same punks that refuses to stand or take off their hats for the national anthem.

If you want to see hate at a level that makes bin Laden seem like a kindly grandpa, check out the DU thread in GD titled 'Repugs hijacking Reagan's funeral: NO DEMOCRATIC SPEAKERS DURING CEREMONY.'

There are posters in that thread that should get a visit from the Secret Service. Which is nothing new for DU.
