and children's clothing has been a major part of this trend

And fashion trends, (pants that use as much fabric as a circus tent or shorts that use more fabric than a blimp) have nothing what-so-ever to do with any of this?

Only with the massively obese, the very top of the distribution, is there a substantial increase in weight, about 25 to 30 pounds.

I wonder why that's happened.

As you move up the scale, a few additional pounds start to show up, but even at midrange, people today are just 6 or 7 pounds heavier than they were in 1991.

This is supposed to be negligible? Averaged over a population, and for a mere 10 year span, this is a huge change.

How can the bogus Atkins fad continue if you keep throwing out facts?

Here's a fact: as of this morning, I've lost 44 pounds on Atkins.

Atkins will continue fine. There's still people that are overweight, and we're still an instant gratification culture that finds the 2 lbs a week of healthy long term life changing diets to be too slow.

In other words the BMI specifically states that it's useless. Body fat percentage is the measurement that works. Anything that doesn't account for gender or muscles mass simply doesn't provide an accurate method of measuring.

It's not useless, just limited.

Most of the people I know following some type of 'atkins' diet are satisfied with a 2 pound or less a week loss.

I wonder why that's happened.

If one adds 1% fat, the fatties will add more pounds, respectively.

You just made my point. If what used to be labelled a 14-16 is now labelled a 10-12, then what used to be labelled a 10-12 was the size of current 6-8. If you wore a 10-12 in older sizing systems, and haven't gained weight, then the new 10-12s are too big for you. If those vintage 14-16s fit you, and modern 10-12s fit you, then modern 14-16s are too big for you, because they're BIGGER than old 14-16s.

Most girls are currently wearing skin-tight and skin-baring clothes. And children's clothing manufacturers report that they are making children's clothes larger, especially in the waist.

You must be in Michigan or some such place; here in Texas the only kids under 5 feet tall are fourth-graders or Mexicans.

And as a 6'-4 adult (male) I'm only just above average height among the guys I work with.

Ah, I get it. I was looking at it the other way, but I think we were getting at the same point. Good explanation!

It completely ignores the majority of the physical attributes necessary to determine if a person really is overweight, it's not only useless it's dangerous in that it can put people that aren't overweight on starvation diets that could lead to future health problems. The BMI was almost useful before they shifted the lines down, now it's complete junk that should be ignored at all times.

None of the people I know following any of those kind of list diets are satisfied with slow healthy weight loss. All you gotta do is look at the covers of the chick magazines, they're always advertising some diet to lose 20 pounds in 10 days. The whole industry is oriented around dangerously fast weight loss.

"Those kind of diets" You originally specified Atkins. Atkins makes no such claim. If fact they decribe a 'moderate, sustained" weight loss.

It doesn't ignore those attributes. In fact, it specifically states that these factors are NOT considered in the formula and must be taken into account in any evaluation of obesity. Please be accurate.

I think that they are going in the other direction with men's belts. My 32 belt is much tighter now than it was 20 years ago.
